Red Bulls set to sign GK Terry Boss

The New York Red Bulls are on the verge of signing goalkeeper Terry Boss from the USL-2 club Charlotte Eagles, sources with knowledge of the deal told SBI late Friday. Terms of the deal, which was close to being completed late Friday, were not known at the time.

Boss was starting goalkeeper for a Charlotte team that finished in first place in USL-2 before losing in the league’s title game to the Cleveland City Stars. Boss led USL-2 in wins (11) and shutouts (9).

Fans who follow soccer AND football in the New York area will be interested to know that Boss is the brother of New York Giants tight end Kevin Boss (insert your ‘this is blackmail for letting the Red Bulls use Giants Stadium’ joke here).

Boss’ arrival leaves the Red Bulls with four goalkeepers and could force the club to release one of its current goalkeepers, most likely reserve goalkeeper Caleb Patterson-Sewell. The Red Bulls traded back-up goalkeeper Zack Thornton to Chivas USA last month and brought back goalkeeper Danny Cepero from a loan deal with Harrisburg of USL-2. Cepero is currently serving as the back-up to Conway.

The Red Bulls are still working on signing one or two more players before Monday’s deadline to make roster changes. Atlanta Silverbacks striker Mac Kandji remains the top target, while Crystal Palace Baltimore winger/forward Matt Mbuta is a strong possibility, particularly if the Red Bulls’ bid for Mbuta falls through.

  1. For what it’s worth, as redshirt senior at Tulsa, Boss lost the starting GK job after a few games to a freshman named Dominic Cervi.

  2. I think this signing is prior to dealing one of the other 3 GKs on the roster. GKing talent is thin this year in MLS. I can see any one of a number of teams who’d like to add a #2 GK. And as highly rated as Cepero is, he could be that player. That then brings in some money to add other players.

  3. Out of the 3 back ups this guy will have the most play time and experience under the belt. I think he may edge our Cepero for the number 2 spot and have Patterson-sewell traded…..bummer too cause i liked him between the posts against Barcelona.

  4. Wow, we needed that like a hole in the head. Ok. Have no idea what to make of signing a 3rd or 2nd string goalkeeper at this point in the season except that it’s just maintainence. Couldn’t NY have picked this guy up in the off-season?

All that said, Kevin Boss is an excellent athlete so if his brother is at all as good, should be a decent pick up.

Ives, I think you meant to write “winger/forward Matt Mbuta is a strong possibility, particularly if the Red Bulls’ bid for *Kandji* falls through.”

I think it would make sense to send this guy out on loan for part of next season (like Cepero this season) to give him some playing time.

  6. I’m all for seeing players get promoted to MLS, but do we really need a goalie?? Unless a trade is in the works for cepero or patterson-sewell than idk whats goin on. Sewell played pretty well vs Barcelona and isn’t there European interest for danny? i hope that is the case b/c it would be cool to have kevin’s bro here and develop him and stuff…
