Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Clint_dempsey_ap

One of these days, Roy Hodgson just might get the message.

The Fulham manager has shown an unwillingness to use his bench, specifically Clint Dempsey, who has looked good in the brief playing time he has gotten this season. Dempsey came off the bench on Sunday and showed once again why he should be playing more for the struggling Cottagers, scoring the equalizing goal to give Fulham a 1-1 tie vs. Portsmouth.

Dempsey raced into the penalty area in the 87th minute to bury a perfect right-footed volley from close range for his first goal of the EPL season. He pounded his chest and you could read his lips as he yelled what looked to be ‘I’m back.’

Dempsey’s goal was one of several highlights for Americans Abroad this weekend. You had Tim Howard enjoying a strong showing against his former club in Everton’s 1-1 tie vs. Manchester United. You also had Michael Bradley making his second straight start for Borussia Moenchengladbach in a crucial 1-0 victroy against Karlsruhe on Sunday.

One positive moment for Americans Abroad involved a player who didn’t actually play. U.S. national team fullback Frank Simek was in uniform for Sheffield Wednesday, making his first appearance in uniform since last December. He has been sidelined by torn ankle ligaments.

  2. Ives-

Is there any chance we could see Convey return to MLS soon? I seem to remember him being from Pennsylvania…what are the odds he will return for 2010? That would be a bit late to help his case for playing time at SA2010, so what does he do if he continues to sit on a cold English bench so much? Have you heard any rumblings about him moving somewhere in the winter?

Thanks for any insight you can provide now or with your next Q&A.

  3. What about Nick Theslof. He is not playing but he now the Assistant Coach at Bayern Munich. What about BM’s come from behind 3-2 victory over Wolfsburg which has jumped them up to 4th in the table?

  4. Arena, agree with you on the Defence. Bradley has gotten 2 games under an interim coach. Beasley has not been playing. He got his first start this weekend and was weak; Demerit and Spector can hopefully come back and strengethen the D but not playing right now and Spector on the auction block for West Hamm and so no real prospects for playing time at the moment. Adu and Jozy adapting to new teams but with no playing time coming into next round of qualifying – got to be cause for convern. Feilhaber and Convey aren’t playing but if playing would probably be better than anyone MLS has to offer in those positions so does nothing to strengthen our options in those positions.

  5. henrik- Seriously. Lately when he’s been playing he’s been playing the midfield. He needs to find a new club this winter where he can get some playing time. That’s got to be frustrating.

  6. Not sure why BB should be “concerned.” The playing time for Nats pool players is about the same as last year. It’d be nice to see more progress, the situation is still vastly improved from previous WC cycles. And some improvement can be expected as players like Altidore and Edu establish themselves at their new clubs.

For now, Bob has Timmy, Los, Gooch, and Cherundolo who pretty much always play 90. Beez is normally a starter too. Bradley Jr. seems to have secured a starting spot. Torres is not an every game starter, but sees good minutes. Davies generally gets good pt too. And for depth we have Hahnemann, Perkins, Califf, Demerit, and Szetela getting good pt. Simek and Spector can be expected to get game action when healthy.

That leaves relatively few “concerns” — Dempsey, Adu, Pearce — and it would be possible to see each of them getting some good play as the season progresses. Lack of PT for Feilhaber, Convey, Johnson etc. is really not a concern. Those guys are off the 2010 radar for now.

  7. Fantastic for Deuce – let’s hope the manager get’s him back on the starting 11 or someone picks him up in January.

Other than that, Bob Bradley has to be concerned that most of them members of the MNT player pool abroad are not seeing much playing time. If we could field a team of goalkeepers, that would be great – otherwise, we have a problem.

  8. Like Adu is coming back anytime soon. He couldn’t get out of the MLS soon enough, remember?

I suppose patience is the theme of ours, lately. Patience for us, but give our boys a chance already.

    DITTO!

Freddie to Seattle Sounders FC (at least he would see the field!)

AND THEY HAD A MAN ADVANTAGE! Sucks that their attack is so good. I really wanted Jozy to play.

  11. Dempsey should be starting. However, did anybody read Hodgson’s comments after the game? He said Zolton Gera, the guy he bought specifically to fill Dempsey’s role, is “coming around.” I think no matter what Deuce does, he may not get a fair shot as long as Hodgson is coach.

  12. For AlphaB

Califf was not happy with how Aalborg handled his contract renewal. Thus, he went for the greener pastures at FC Midtjylland, whre he was offered a longer contract with more money. Yes, he could have been playing Champion’s League football if he stayed but he wasn’t happy with his former club.

  13. Danny Califf- best defender in Denmark. I hope he takes time to improve FC Midtjylland. They have a good enough of team to qualify for the UEFA CUP. And who knows, he might eventually move on up to the Bundesliga or Eredivisie?

  14. Come on Heath Pearce. He gotta get his butt on the field. I thought he was supposed to be traded this past August to some team in the Championship? He shows great skill as leftback for the national team but seems to lose it when playing for Hansa Rostock.

  15. Monaco game was on Setanta. They have an atrocious offense. I ended up watching the whole second half because they were so bad I couldn’t believe they wouldn’t put in Freddy for a spark off the bench.

  16. How is Troy Perkin’s play for Valarenga? Any chance he might get a move up to a better league in a season or 2? I wonder his chances of making the roster for the World Cup or will Marcus Hahneman or Chris Seitz take his place?

  17. Dempsey is THE MAN. With a sweet goal like that, i expect in a few years for him to rival that of McBride in the lore of the Fulham faithful.

  18. Dempsey is still my favorite. He’s just a guy for whom you want good things. As mentioned above, he could have reacted pretty poorly to the PT situation at Fulham but he didn’t. Pure class.

As for Villareal…too bad Jozy doesn’t play defense or holding mid…he might get some time. If we’re really fair, he’s not good enough to play striker on that team; their attack is awesome.

  19. Good stuff from Deuce. Couldve been bitching and moaning about PT, coaching changes, and imcoming players. Instead, put his head down worked hard got into the team and scored. Now all we need is for the way overrated and too short Everton reject Andy Johnson to catch an ACL or something becuase apparently only and act of God can keep Andy Johnson, diver supreme and Everton reject, on the bench

  20. Dempsey is hardcore. Hopefully he harvests this attitude so it makes it difficult not to start him at Fulham. I know he certainly has been producing for the US but when he shows some of this swagger he can be so much better. Here’s to good things to come for Dempsey.

  21. Dude, Dempsey is just a straight up warrior. Dude just takes what they give him, keeps fighting the whole way through, uses it to build that chip on his shoulder, and then performs on the field. Once my favorite Nat, quickly building his way back to that status.

Also, that picture of him is beastly.

  22. Monaco continues to suck and not score at all. Would be nice for Adu to get some time but I realize that the guys ahead of him are just playing great (sarcasm).

  23. Still no sign of the Irish Leagues, amazing. Well if Ives is too inept to post ’em:

Ryan Guy (St. Pat’s) – Subbed in the 44th minute due to an injury and an out of reach game in St. Pat’s 3-1 loss to Bohemians in the Ford FAI Cup.

Chris Konopka (Bohemians) – Was the backup goalie in the above match, but saw no playing time.

Jamie Duffy (Dundalk) – Played the full 90 in Dundalk’s 1-0 win at Waterford United, but was subbed out in injury time with an injury.

Nate Weiss (Longford Town) – The match v. Shelbourne was delayed until Monday due to poor field conditions.

  24. I’ve never rooted against a Yank Abroad team more than Monaco. I really can’t understand how Ricardo gives a chance to Mollo, a young, untested French player. Continues to start Park, who has looked inept since his first game.

Yet Freddy languishes, doesn’t even get a proper chance.

I can’t wait til this douche is fired.

Props to Clint, kid always fights back.

  25. Thanks for the hard work. I was staying up late myself to research this stuff, only to find out you put in overtime to put it up late. Thanks.

Nice to see Dempsey produce again. I was disappointed not to see Adu come, as there was a late injury, but at least Bradley is getting playing time.
