Good morning folks. I will be heading to Salt Lake City today ahead of tonight’s big match between Real Salt Lake and the New York Red Bulls. Tonight’s match marks the opening of Rio Tinto Stadium, and also features two teams in the middle of the playoff chase.
This is my first trip to Utah so, as is customary when SBI is on the road in an unfamiliar city, I want to ask those of you familiar with Salt Lake City and those of you who live there to offer up some suggestions on places to go and things to do in SLC. I have a day to see the town before heading to the new stadium and am looking forward to seeing some Real Salt Lake fans celebrating the historic day.

Not sure a Salary cap works becasue it is the Transfer fees that are the problems. A debt to income ratio might be a good idea though. It would not keep the top teams from spending but might keep them from out spending everyone else.

Seriously tho, hit Squatters for some nice low point draught and so-so pub grub, the team will hit Baxter’s (in the Gateway) after the game – even tho it is overpriced.
Other than that if you have time to do much more – I’m sorry.
Make sure you try the Polygamy Ale (no joke). And … why have just one?
I would recommend Diamond Lil’s Steakhouse if it is still around. We used to go there after a long day of skiing and always ejoyed it!
Take it from a Mormon living in the Northwest, Utah sucks.
Want to see something that few locals and nearly no visitors see, but is very cool? Gilgal Sculpture Garden. It is a collection of sculptures done by an eccentric fellow with an unusual religious inspiration. There is a folk art character that underlies a real vision and skill. It is very accessible to TRAX (walk around the block from the Wonder Bread factory on 400 South at about 750 East (heading towards the U of Utah). Hidden back down a road in a residential street, it will reward you by it being unusual, conversational, and beautiful. Last I was there, it was free, with donation box for its upkeep and renovation.

Went to school in SLC, and lived in both SLC and Park City for the better part of 20 years. I’ll definitely put my vote in for the Red Iguana- hands down the best Mexican food you’ll find. Also- someone mentioned Little World for Chinese food- I agree- just be aware, you’ll find stuff on the menu that you’ll never find at most Chinese restaurants- I think that’s what sets it apart. I also loved Crown Burger while I was there.
Drives up Parleys Canyon (Park City, Deer Valley), Big Cottonwood (Solitude, Brighton) or Little Cottonwood (Snowbird, Alta) would all be great, although if you want to do something at your destination, I’d choose Parleys.
You can also drive up Immigration Canyon, and eat at Ruth’s- great breakfast place, great setting, usually good music.
You could always come to the tailgate party in the west parking lot and hang out with the FCB, RCB, and the Loyalists. It would be cool to have you come meet RSL’s three supporters clubs.
