This weekend’s soccer on TV

Admit it, watching Sergio Aguero and Lionel Messi play is one of the great joys of your soccer-loving life.

What’s not to love about the two Argentine stars? When they play together, their understanding of each other, speed and skill are breathtaking. When they play against each other, you can bet that they are both trying to show each other up.

This weekend offers us the special treat of Aguero vs. Messi. Sure, there will be plenty of other stars on the field when Barcelona takes on Atletico Madrid this weekend, but chances are Messi and Aguero will attracting the most attention from you and defenders.

That is why Atletico/Barca is the marquee match-up this week, leading the Top Five of matches to watch this week. Check out the Top 5, as well as this weekend’s soccer TV schedule, after the jump:

Top Five matches to watch.

1. Atletico Madrid at Barcelona. You can rest assured there will be some great attacking soccer on display as Atletico’s loaded offense looks to upset Barca at the Nou Camp.

2. Aston Villa at Chelsea. Villa may be second only to Liverpool this season in terms of being impressive in EPL play. Now we will see just how good Aston Villa is against a Chelsea squad reeling from injuries, but also playing at Stamford Bridge, where the Blues haven’t lost in 100 years (give or take 98 years).

3. Liverpool at Manchester City. This match would have just a little more buzz of City hadn’t been trounced last week. Even with that. Manchester City is tough at home and Robinho should cause serious problems for Liverpool. The real quest is whether Richard Dunne and the City defense can contain Fernando Torres.

4. Montreal Impact at Vancouver White Caps. Why should you, as an American, watch this match? Any fan can appreciate the rivalry, both these teams just might be in MLS one day, and Montreal goalkeeper Matt Jordan just might be playing for your MLS team next year.

5. Newcastle at Everton. Please remember my philosophy that sometimes, when struggling teams square off, we get a gem of a game between two teams just going for broke. I think this match just might be one of those. No, you don’t want to see Tim Howard involved in a high-scoring affair, but this one could wind up as one.

  5. Brant is delirious. 6-0 is a bit more realistic.

I’ll be driving up to Vancouver for the #4 game. I’ll come back with the answer to “what language do Canadian fans use to jeer each other?”

  8. I love the Central Coast stadium: Beautiful palm trees on an ocean front boulevard. Kind of like the Orange Bowl, minus the threat of imminent death …
