Where should MLS expand to next?

Mls_logo

It has been more than two months since Major League Soccer approved plans to add two expansion teams by 2011 and the speculation about which two markets will be chosen is rampant.

In every corner of the United States, and various parts of Canada, there is growing buzz about MLS potentially choosing them. There are the favorites, such as New York, and the darkhorses, like Ottawa, but we still aren’t close to knowing which two cities will receive teams.

What if it were up to you to decide? What if you could vote on which two teams joined MLS by 2011? Here is your chance. I want you to select two cities to be the next two to receive MLS expansion franchises:

Who did you pick and why? Share your thoughts and selections in the comments section below.

  1. St. Louis!

    1.St. Louis

    2.New York

    3.Montreal

    4.Miami

This is the order in which the expansion teams should be awarded.

St. Louis has been consistent and have shown the will anchor MLS success, not posing a risk like Miami or Portland.

New York needs a team of its own. LA has two, so why not.

Montreal has the ownership and the fan base to be considered as the next strongest market for MLS expansion.

People need to do whats best for the League. All 4,000 Portland fans can come on here and vote for their city to win but it will only hurt the league…maybe if you all win the USL next year…..not going to happen.

  2. ottawa for sure cause they got the money and and they have a nice stadium plan and design and plus look how many club teams they have in ottawa…OSU the best club team for youth in ontario (good players that could possibly play for team)…Ottawa Fury ranked 5th in the world for youth clubs(sent over 30 poeple to the states for scholarships and 2 are already playing in the EPL)….U-20 world cup 2 years ago (sold out tickets for every game)….and plus canada is full of immigrants and immigrants love soccer and they will support it..and for a states team i would say portland

  3. I would like Portland and Vancouver to see the great NorthWest rivalry again with Seattle.

Also, Portland A.K.A., SoccerCity U.S.A., has the most rabid soccer fans around!

  6. I voted Ottawa and Las Vegas.

Ottawa out of my own intrest as I live there but for other reasons also,

first Matches between OFC and TFC would make a great rivalry for the game and the MLS in Canada.

also, Ottawa’s bid will be managed by Eugene Melnyk, who is on the list of richest Canadians with a net worth of 1.4 billion

I also picked Vegas as MLS could be a link to lead vegas to many professional sports franchises in the MLB, NFL,or NBA

  7. Did any of you who voted against Canada/Ottawa actually pay attention to the U-20 World Cup last summer??? Every game in Ottawa, 25 000+…guess there’s no support in the Nation’s Capital EH?

  8. TD is wrong about vancouver.

He mentions 2 stadium options. Vancouver actually has one poor option and that is to play in old BC Place – a domed, oversized football stadium.

That’s not what MLS needs anymore, and the Northwest doesn’t need TWO teams playing in oversized soulless caverns.

  9. 1. Vancouver= fan base, Seattle and Porland rivalry, owner$$$hip group, two stadium options, one of them will be among the best in the world

    2. Portland= fans base, rivalry with Portland and Vancouver, stadium not a closed deal, ownership group not in Seattle or Vancouver’s league financially unless a partner is added.

    3. Montreal= apparent fan base, owner (Saputo) makes me nervous; has $, but will he fit in MLS chaebol.

    4. St. L= only two worries, does ownership group have stomach for MLS operating losses until every team is in SSS and profitable? Do they have to isolate themselves in IL?

    5. NYC2- Could be great if the ownership group does it right a la Seattle

I’d like to see all five get in the league in the next few years. I’m convinced they’d have operating profits quickly assuming they all get their own stadiums. The league needs to present itself better on TV and have more teams in the black to improve. These markets could help.

  10. IT SHOULD ONLY BE NEW YORK AND MIAMI!!! NOT ONLY WILL THEY SUPPORT MLS IN A KILLER WAY BUT THEY’LL BRING THE SEXY AS WELL!!! SOMETHING THIS LEAGUE DEMANDS AND DESERVES IF THEY ARE TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY AS A PREMIER SOCCER LEAGUE!!! ALL OTHER CITIES ARE FRAUDS WHO DON’T DESERVE TO BE CONSIDERED!!! ESPECIALLY THE CANUCKISTANI CITIES WHO THINK THEY CAN GET INTO OUR LEAGUE!!! MEMO TO CANADA: TAKE YOUR TORONTOFC AND GO FORM YOUR OWN DAMN LEAGUE!!! MLS FOR AMERICANS ONLY!!! THAT’S MY OPINION!!! DON’T LIKE IT?!! THEN I HAVE TWO WORDS FOR YOU: EAT IT!!!

NEW YORK AND MIAMI!!! ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION, GARBER?!! MAKE IT SO FOR THE BETTERMANT OF OUR MLS!!!

  11. St. Louis, obviously. Then maybe Portland. Not only will it BE St. Louis anyway…but they, in all honesty, should’ve had a team before most of the league anyway. The history there rivals anywhere else in North America. The support would be immense. I’ve been there a few times and was blown away at the love of football there. Great place with an amazing history.
