As far as second seasons in Europe go, Charlie Davies had himself a very good one.

The U.S. national team striker concluded the Swedish season last weekend by scoring two goals to give him a season total of 14, that is 11 more than the three he scored in his first year with Hammarby. Having shown promising glimpses for the national team, Davies is looking very much like a candidate for the 2010 World Cup.

Davies’ performance was one of severa good ones for Americans Abroad last weekend. You had Michael Bradley returning to the Borussia Moenchengladbach lineup in a crucial victory. 1. Daniel Hernandez got eased out of his dmid job by the emergence of Jeff Larentowicz – but it also had a lot to do with a loooooooooooooooooooooooong recovery from an ankle injury.

He was very calm and poised in his own end for an american player, a smart and reliable passer and a very tough defender, but was rather slow of foot.

He publicly criticized Nicol in his first time with the Revs, but they brought him back again, so it couldn’t have been that big a deal.

One thing he was always known for was delivering a crunching tackle on anyone abusing his teammates. Boy, could the Revs use someone like that now!

  2. re Daniel Hernandez:

Yeah, from what I remember he had decent MLS talent and was used as a CB or central mid. He got a few brief USMNT call-ins during the 2006 cyle but was never capped.

I believe he was on the bench in the first match after the 2002 WC, which was a friendly against El Salvador at RFK in Nov. 02. Arena gave first caps to several players (Nick Rimando, Wade Barrett, Sasha Victorine, Kyle Martino, and Taylor Twellman, but Hernandez didn’t play.

Then, 3 years later, he was brought into an Arena camp in the fall of 2005. He was named to the roster for 1 of the 2 WCQs that followed the camp, but did not manage to get any action in front of the Foxboro crowd during the US’s 2-0 win over Panama (first caps for Brain Carroll, Rico Clark, and Justin Mapp).

I think Hernandez butted heads with Nicol. Eventually he lost his place in the center of the pitch as the Revs had Shalrie Joseph, Clint Dempsey, and Jose Cancela. Well, something like that. Memory of how and when his role declined is not totally clear. But he left and found that he was bale to get decent playing time in Mexico.

  3. Didn’t Hernandez give a great eat s**t look to Steve Nicol after scoring a long range goal in a game? I can’t remember if it was because Nicol wasn’t playing him much and finally brought him on as a sub or if he’d been traded and scored against Nicol. Anyone remember that? Maybe it wasn’t Nicol, but his coach on a different team. Anyway, I believe it was one of his last appearances in MLS.

Soccer 365 a little while back reported Kamani Hill is on trial (or maybe was now) with a top flight Norway club.

Ives or someone else– what’s the appeal of US players for Norway’s league. Is it the ability to adapt to a physical style and pace? something else all together?

  5. Tonerl, settle down. If I know about an injury I list it. With regard to Spector, I had him listed as recovering from injury up until last week, when I heard he had rejoined West Ham and was training again. I know there are some folks who have had injury issues, such as Feilhaber and Grover Gibson, but if fresh information doesn’t emerge I can’t really update it.

  6. I watched the Fulham-Newcastle game over the weekend, and Clint played pretty well despite his limited minutes. He definitely gave them spark of offense and pressure on the right side of the pitch.

  7. Sweeden is not a top league and his speed will not count for as much when he moves up, but I would say that he and Jozy are the first US strikers that I have seen that have that calm first touch followed quickly by a hard, quality finish.

  8. Barry Jive,

Hernandez was with the MetroStars before the Revs. He showed a lot of promise back then. I remember him always cracking shots from 30 yards out.

  9. I know Howard and Guzan are our no.1 and no.2 but whose our option for no.3? Troy Perkins? Marcus Hahnemann? Chris Seitz? Dominic Cervi?

  10. Clint Dempsey. Sooner or later he will be back in the starting lineup for Fulham. We definitely need him to have full action each week, gonna need him in South Africa to win.

  11. Looks like EJ is finally coming together, hoping he keeps fighting for a starting place for club and for country. If he fails at Cardiff, he should probably head to a team in Portugal or Denmark to live a safe life.

  12. Hey guys, I was at the Fulham game on Sunday and got to watch Clint play. He played very well. I have a new favorite player in Dempsey. I got to go down to field after the game and speak to him and he gave me his game jersey. He made my trip to Europe worth it. Very nice guy and thank you Clint for your jersey. I feel he should be getting more playing time at Fulham and that was before he gave me the jersey.

  13. What about Danny Califf? He needs to get him some love. He has to be 1 of the best defenders in Denmark. Anyone know his stats in the Danish league?

  14. Charlie Davies should be set to leave Sweden sooner or later for a mid or lower table team in Holland or Germany. He should definitely be a sub for the WC. He has the talent to be a super sub coming on for Donovan.

  15. Charlie Davies speed is really amazing in the limited amount of time that I have seen him. His finishing touch is the HUGE difference this season as he has always beed able to beat defenders. Now he is also putting th ball in the side netting.

I hope Johann Smith can recover from injury and develop a similar touch. They along with Jozy have a great future with the Nats.

Here is a Hattrick that Davies scored:

Jesus Padilla was born in the US to Mexican parents. I think he returned to Mexico at a young age. Because he plays for Chivas Guadaljara, he has to pass himself off as a Mexican citizen (presumably, that is where his loyalty lies). There was a lot of controversy a while back about Padilla playing for Chivas, since he was not born in Mexico.

Daniel Hernandez is a MLS veteran. He played for the Galaxy, Metrostars, and the New England Revolution. He has been playing for bottom-table Mexican clubs the past two years. He was never on the national team radar, but I think he would play for the US if given the chance. I wonder how much of a salary upgrade it is for him to be playing for unsuccessful clubs in Mexico, rather than as a rotation player in MLS. If the difference is that large, more Americans should be telling their agents to look into the option of playing in Mexico, rather than Norway or Denmark.

  17. We’re staying in Springfield, but I speak “metro” and have problem hopping a ride if I need to. I know Arlington a bit b/c I have family there, so Summers might fit the bill.

Thanks for the suggestions and wherever I end up, I’ll be the guy in the Crew Supporters’ Shield t-shirt and Playoff scarf 🙂

  18. Brant,

(sorry), ps some parts of northwest quarter of dc are actaully closest to VA, so i don’t mean to confuse you…

I’ve been to Summers too, it’s a good spot, but lucky has $1 rail drinks thursday I believe.

  19. Grant,

Lucky Bar on 18th and M is a soccer bar. You should call ahead to make sure they’re showing the game, but they usaully show most MLS games, and I can’t imagine they wouldn’t show the playoffs.

It’s in the North West section of the city, about a 8 dollar cab ride from downtown or the capital area, but it’s very close to most of the hotels. It’s kind of a college spot so be prepared for some crowds.

  20. Brant – if you are staying in the Arlington/Alexandria/Roslyn area for your business trip, try Summers in Arlington (right by the Court House metro stop on the Orange line). I assume you mean VA suburbs if you are talking about the South Side of DC. I’ll check back later to offer another suggestion if this isn’t close to where you’ll be staying.

  21. Ives, why do you keep mentioning every week that Jonathan Spector did not dress for West Ham?

Do you realize that he just returned to first team training last week

  22. Padilla doesn’t usually get consistent minutes but Hernandez does. Padilla doesn’t impress me at all Hernandez isn’t bad I would say maybe he could be a 3rd option at his position for the Nats.

  23. This is off-topic for this thread, but I gotta ask before it’s too late:

I need a bar on the south side of the DC area that would be good for watching the Crew-Fire playoff game tomorrow night. Gotta travel to DC for work and would rather watch in a good pub than in my hotel room.

  24. Who are Jesus Padilla and Daniel Hernandez? I take it from Ives’ format that they are not cap-tied for Mexico. They seem to be getting pretty consistent minutes in the Mexican league. Are these guys getting any consideration for the USMNT? What positions do they play?

Ugh. I wonder what the Cardiff City message boards / blogs had to say about his performance.

  26. Wow, they were both headers from the little guy too. If I remember correctly he almost scored on a header against Nigeria in the olympics when he came on as a sub, too. It’s nice to see a smaller guy not afraid to use his speed or take it to the air.

  27. Davies tied with Henrick Larsen for 4th in Sweden with 14 mals. I don’t know what a mal is, but I assume it is a goal (not necessarily safe, as there were three outfield player statistics, and Larsen was leading the other 2). (I looked at Sweden’s Allsvenskan Liga’s official website).

Ives, are there any transfer rumors regarding Davies?

anyone have s suggestion on where to view highlights of him in league play?

  29. Is Charlie Davies part machine gun? It seems like without him, Hammarby would have nothing on the attack. I also saw that Charlie Davies’ two goals came within 3 minutes of each other on the 2 and 5 minute marks I believe.
