CONCACAF Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Ricardo Fuller (AFP)

(Hello all. It has been a few months since CONCACAF Abroad: Weekend Rewind left the regular SBI rotation. It has made its way back. New correspondent GianFranco Panizo, a journalism student from Florida Atlantic University, makes his SBI debut by giving us the latest on how CONCACAF's top players did in Europe this past weekend. Enjoy.)

It was relatively a good weekend for CONCACAF players plying their trade in Europe. Not only did we witness Reggae Boyz Ricardo Fuller and Marlon King score goals in the Hull-Stoke deadlock but Honduran player Julio 'Rambo' Leon gave Serie B side Parma three points with his 70th-minute game winner.

The Jamaicans didn't have all the fun. Mexico's contingent enjoyed a strong weekend as the majority of their European-based players held key roles in their team's wins. Rafael Marquez, Andres Guardado, Ricardo Osorio and Pavel Pardo were among the players to help lead their teams to victories.

As always, if there are CONCACAF players missing from the list who are playing regularly in one of Europe's top leagues, please feel free to let us know about him so we can add him to the list. The players who are out of season will be removed from the list starting next week.

What did you think of last weekend's performances? Are you glad to see Mexico's top players impress even after their national team stumbled through qualifiying? Are you starting to wonder what a Kenwyne Jones/Darryl Roberts strike force is going to look like for Trinidad & Tobago in next year's qualifying?

  1. CapeCodFutbol:

It depends on how you define best.

He hasn’t really lit up the Portuguese league so far but IMO, he’s the best attacking player from CONCACAF in Europe.

The best overall player has to be Marquez.

  2. Although they’re a minor team, quite some Netherlands Antilles internationals play in top leagues, for example: Robin Nellise (Red Bull Salzburg), Nyron and Nelson Wau (both trialling around the world at the moment), Tyrone Loran (NAC Breda), Angelo Martha (Willem II Tilburg), Orlando Smeekes, Sendley Bito (somewhere in the Ukraine), Dyron Daal (in Scotland), Raymond Homoet (Volendam).

  3. Very nice, thanks for all this information that will allow us to compare with the competition of the US of A. Crazy to see the talent that Canada has out in Europe, I hope in the coming years they improve because all at CONCACAF can benefit from the rise of their game. Appreciate the CONCACAF Abroad segment, thank you fellas…

  4. Since we get to have the ever popular “American-born Players Playing for Other Countries” section in the Americans Abroad post, isn’t only fair that to add a “CONCACAF-born Players Playing for Other Countries” so our friends to the North can keep tabs on Owen Hargreaves?

  5. Tom P,

I was thinking the same thing about Canada.

As much as I hate the Mexican national team, they legitimize the US success. If we didn’t have them in CONCACAF it would just give the US haters even more fuel. I still root against teams in Europe that have Mexican players though, I just can’t bring myself to support them.

  6. Ives,

It is very cool you go to the trouble to do this.

When I see the amount of Canadians playing in Europe it is really surprises me how poorly they fair in CONCACAF. Their federation must be a real mess.

Saltari needs to get out of Spurs in the winter transfer. He is rotting in oblivion.
