Contrary to reports out of Central America, Toronto FC playmaker and Honduran national team captain Amado Guevera is not leaving Toronto FC after just one season.

Reports out of Honduras are claiming that Guevara has agreed to a deal to return to Honduras and play for CD Motagua. Patrick McCabe, Guevara's agent, has shot down the rumors, stating emphatically that Guevara is returning to Toronto next season.

"Amado’s option has been exercised for 2009 and he’s currently under contract with MLS and playing for Toronto and that will continue," McCabe told SBI on Friday. "Any report to the contrary is absolute nonsense.

"He and his wife are very happy in Toronto."

Toronto FC sources confirmed that Guevera has had his contract option picked up.

Guevara joined Toronto FC from Motagua last April, with TFC completing a deal with Chivas USA for his rights. He played 21 games for Toronto FC this year, scoring four goals and providing a key creative presence in central midfield for TFC. The former MLS MVP steered clear of any of the disciplinary problems that plagued his previous stint in MLS.

So how did we wind up with these reports out of Honduras? Guevara has made it a tradition of  returning to Honduras in the MLS off-season to train with Motagua and it looks as if some journalists in Honduras mistook his most recent trip down there for a permanent move back.

With Toronto FC poised to re-tool their squad thanks to $1 million in allocation money and three first-round draft picks, Guevara is seen as one of the key building blocks TFC will build their squad around in 2009.

  1. While Guevarra did take some nights off, he would be missed if he didn’t return. TFC is not blessed with a lot of skill and creativity in the midfield, so I’m happy to hear he will be coming back!

  2. I’m still somewhat surprised at the level of vitriol towards Guevara before he moved to TFC. You’d have thought we were signing a plague carrier or something; but he’s been a model pro, he’s usually the best player (from either team) on the pitch and it would be a big loss if he didn’t come back.

  3. This comes as no surprise. Why should Guevara return to Honduras for slave wages when he can stay in Toronto and make some sweet moolah with Uncle Rico.

  4. Any rumors about DeRosario comin to TFC? I guess it wouldn’t make a lot of sense now.

Thanks for posting this Ives, your site rocks!
