Brad Guzan got the start for Aston Villa in UEFA Cup action Thursday but he couldn't duplicate the success of fellow U.S. national teamer Oguchi Onyewu, who enjoyed a victory.
Villa and Guzan fell to MSK Zilina, 2-1, in UEFA Cup action on Thusday, but the Villans still progressed to the tournament's round of 32. Fielding a team made up mainly of reserves, Aston Villa couldn't take advantage of Zilina playing a man down for the last 11 minutes.
It wasn't a great day for English clubs as Portsmouth also suffered a loss, a 3-2 setback against VFL Wolfsburg that eliminated Portsmouth from the competition.
Here are the rest of Thursday's UEFA Cup results:
-
VFL Wolfsburg 3, Portsmouth 2
-
Heerenveen 1, Braga 2
-
Slavia Prague 0, Hamburg 2
-
Aston Villa 1, MSK Zilina 2
-
Valencia 1, Club Brugge 1
-
FC Copenhage 1, Rosenborg 1
-
Lech Poznan 1, Deportivo La Coruna 1
-
AS Nancy Lorraine 3, CSKA Moscow 4
What do you think of these results? Glad to see Guzan getting more UEFA Cup action? Surprised to see Portsmouth go out? Think CSKA Moscow's Vagner Love is ready for a big winter move after Thursday's hat trick?

Also, just read O’Neill comments and he doesn’t care who they play in the next round. That means Guzan could play alongside the rest of the reserves in Hamburg.
It’s tough to be cohesive when you make wholesale changes to your lineup. I think Martin O’Neill is getting worried that the UEFA Cup is negatively affecting their league play and wants to rest the regulars.
Zat Knight didn’t do Guzan any favors. Also, having a midfielder at right back and a right back at left back can’t help.
I think Vagner Love will stay put as he just re-signed with the team. I’m sure he’s making good money.
Love just signed a multiyear extension. That’ll drive up his price if anything.
braga is looking really good in this competition if luck was on their side vs wolfsburg (unlcuky pk agaisnt them then a 93 min goal) and milan (4 breakaway stops and a amazing goal by ronaldinho) they could have gone undefeated
look out for them to make a splash
Good to see David James living up to his nickname today. What a howler that third goal was.
Not sure what happened on goal 1, but there was no communication between El Guzano and his defender. Nothing he could do about goal 2. Such is life on the B team, he got good reviews last time out. Glad they are moving on so he can hopefully play more.
I could see Love ot Madrid
