Beckham makes Milan debut in friendly

David Beckham (Reuters)

David Beckham made his AC Milan debut on Tuesday, playing 45 minutes in Milan's exhibition draw vs. Hamburg in Dubai. Milan won the friendly in penalty kicks, 4-3.

Beckham's appearance was largely quiet, with a mistake nearly leading to a Hamburg goal. He came out at halftime for French midfielder Mathieu Flamini.

Beckham's Serie A debut is scheduled to come on Jan. 11 against AS Roma. His loan deal is expected to allow him to return to the Los Angeles Galaxy for the start of the MLS season.

What do you think of Beckham's debut? Still don't see him playing many minutes for Milan? Think he can make an impact in Serie A and the UEFA Cup? Have you ordered a Beckham Milan jersey?

  1. You are honestly lucky to have him at the Galaxy – for the first time since Pele retired Europe has some interest in your domestic league.

I’m amazed people seem to think he’s too old and a waste of money – he’s just started playing for AC Milan – how many other players in the MLS would get into the Milan squad?

Certainly he was in his prime a while ago – probably his last year at Man Utd and his first at Real Madrid (when, in my opinion, he was the best player for both teams). But he is still a different class of player and an incredible ambassador for the game.

You’re lucky to have him – count your blessings!

  2. I was never a Becks fan, but his coming to the MLS was one of the greatest things to happen for the league at that time. It did not end in storybook fashion, but his coming broke a major psychological barrier people had within and without the USA about the MLS. More needs to be done, but all you have to do is remember when the rumors were floated NO ONE thought it would happen, at least not for 3 or 4 years. His coming brought buzz back, and a few players came in his wake.

It was ground breaking for the Galaxy to have signed him. Mistakes and Miscues were made, to be sure. But I’d rather have them, and what we have now, than MLS pre-Beckham. You can grow from your mistakes. Great job, Leiweke and Lalas. Now keep moving. Increase salary cap, divorce DP money from cap, sign better mid-level players, keep the Argentina pipeline open, and raise the bottom salaries to decent living wages. Should be done by next week. 🙂

PS. I got tickets to US- MEXICO!

  3. Well I’m left with a choice! Do I listen to the ‘instant experts on this post re the football skills and value of Beckham, or do I take the views of Ancilotti, Ericksson,Capello, Kaka, Ronaldinho, ‘Raul, and every manager he has played for or against.

I think I’ll go for the views of Ancilotti, Ericksson, Capello etc. (look them up lou, johnny), and leave the views of the inadequates like lou and Johnny alone.

  4. I was never a fan of this pretty boy. I knew it was all talk and I was okay with it because it was a way for the league to generate money and popularity. If the league wants to start signing younger stars it will have to start out with older ones obviously, but a balance of popularity and skill should be wat is sought after. A player like del piero will generate money maybe less than becks but he will play a hell of alot better and bring positive press to the league. After signing players like that we will slowly be able to move towards younger stars but that will never happen if we waste our time on beckham i say stay in milan and just give the mls money for someone worth our time.

  5. we were fortunate to meet Beckham. although not one of the best players in the world, top 50 maybe, he is certainly one of the classiest acts my kid has met. Yet, on a “dead ball”, he, along with juninho pernambucano @ Lyon are the best

  6. Al17: Truth. There are legitimate criticisms of the way Beckham plays football (never runs into the box), but he is clearly not “too old” or “washed up.” Yes, he is over hyped. He always has been (he has never been the best player on his team…ever), but he is still a good player (save the galaxy, he has played on incredible teams). It seems that most resent Beckham because it has gotten attention to the MLS…as if they wanted to keep it to themselves. There are more obscure leagues people.

    Ethan,
you’re supporting your criticism of him by referring to the way he actually plays the game and in an intelligent manner – in my opinion. This doesn’t bother me, hell this is what I’d like to see more of when people post about him as a player or for the matter any other player. It’s the criticisms and lack of facts contained within them that I’m so damn tired of hearing. Too many people – as you know – knock this man without basing it on something remotely factual.

  10. Ugh, the “i hate beckham, wah wah wah wahhhh” stuff is so mind numbing. It’s as if some people feel that they have to liter every comment section with smack to prove how “real” they are.

It’s like reading comments from a bunch of spoiled children who aren’t getting their way.

  12. Glad he got playing time but also glad he struggled some. It means that he still needs work to get where he wants to be. That is good for both him and MLS.

  13. Why is it that those of you whom are not Beckham fans wish to continue sharing your dislike of the man with the rest of us? It’s like some pissing contest in regards to how much you dislike the man. Ok, we get it!!! Now if you can’t actually say something factual about his game then shut the F.. UP!!! Damn!!! The fact that you’re chatting about him is more than enough proof that he’s worth every dime MLS spent in bringing him here. You guys all seem to know more than the clubs that have signed him to play. He still has more caps than most current England players (directed to the many I love England / EPL nuts on this and other sites).

i am not a big fan the man, but i guess i also had realistic expections of his on field contributions. Beckham also always been a player restricted to his role on the field, can’t blame him if almost everyone else can’t seem to function.

  16. This would have been interesting 5 plus years ago. Now it’s a dumb move by an egocentric washed up player.

L.A. should void their contract with him.

  17. Beckham is still a great player. He will do just fine in Milan and be back in LA just in time to play with his pub team.

  18. I posted it earlier, but I just want to say it again:

1> Landon stays in Munich on a permanent move

2> LA Galaxy bring in Freddy Adu to be the “new Donovan”

3> Beckham comes back after his spell in Milan

4> Beasley goes to LA Galaxy with the hope that the “Beckham Effect” can get him a back to Europe in a year.

  19. ALL WASHED UP! At first when he came to the MLS I was a big supporter. Now after everything he has done and not done for soccer in the US I can’t stand hearing or seeing anything about this meglomanic has been. By the way he couldn’t even get his team to the playoffs. What a Loser!

  20. He’ll score a goal or two, get into a few games and be back in LA right on schedule. Say what you will about MLS – the market is growing too quickly for Becks to mess up his future ownership deal with the league without some serious dollars being thrown around in both directions.
