Beckham injures hamstring as transfer battle continues

David Beckham (Reuters)

The David Beckham transfer saga that was supposed to end last week continues and now is adding new twists by the day.

Beckham suffered a hamstring injury in AC Milan's 2-1 loss to Inter Milan on Sunday, a loss that further damaged Milan's already faint hopes of catching Inter in the Serie A standings.

Now, about that transfer. The Los Angeles Times is reporting that AC Milan's first (and only offer to this point) for Beckham was a paltry $3 million, a figure that was pretty easy for MLS and the Los Angeles Galaxy to turn down considering they are looking for a fee in the $10 to $15 million range. With MLS and Galaxy officials away this week, it looks like a transfer is very unlikely to take place this week, if ever.

As for Beckham, he isn't exactly saying things that would make a return to MLS a smooth transition.

"I hope that things will go the way I want them to and I have already said it is my desire to stay at Milan,'' Beckham said. "Having clarified that I want to stay here, it might be difficult to go back to playing in the States."

So where do we stand? MLS and the Galaxy insisted that the deadline would not be budged and that there would be no future talks, but Beckham and Milan sure do sound convinced that talks are still ongoing. Do you believe MLS? Or are you starting to think that the deadline was set because Galaxy and MLS officials didn't want to have to explain going on vacation this week? Believe the reports that Beckham just might buy himself out of his current contract?

  1. Okay, now I’m moving from the camp of “Let my Beckham go” to the camp of “Honor the contract.” His latest comments are completely irritating. Like others have mentioned I assumed he would handle this professionally because I’ve actually admired him for his generous gestures to fans around the world, his work ethic, etc.

    He’s lost me.

  2. kofi x5……blanco and schelloto are more involved in the game, their style of play is more flashy and creative than is Beckham’s that’s why they worked out better. Also, they play on better teams..think about it. Beckham is so used to playing around stars that he forgot what it was like to play alongside scrubs, it ended up becoming a mistake and something he regrets, he just made his decision to come to America too early in his career. He’s human we all make bad decisions sometime or another let him go play with superstars! Like you would choose Galaxy over Milan??!!

  3. I have honestly lost a good deal of respect for a man who I used to greatly respect. I’m not even a Galaxy fan and I can’t believe that Golden Balls’ management team negotiated a loan without even consulting them… a loan which would never benefit Galaxy at all…and then he gets injured. It’s infuriating
And I echo the people saying he should have learned more about MLS before signing the deal…but that’s what you get when you have far below average intelligence

  4. hmmmm…..sounds like an inside deal to me. All of the sudden Becks gets his hammy injured all of the sudden his value has dropped and that 3 million offer from AC Milan doesnt look that bad.

AC Milan and Becks working together to get this transfer done. Becks is not as stupid as he looks. Our ambassador to US Soccer has revealed himself…Cauhtemoc Blanco.

  5. David–Beckham….is that you?

You should have done your homework re:MLS.
Schelloto and Blanco made it work. They are role players too. They took the time to learn how to get the best out of their teammates.
Everyone knows LA defense sucked and was probably the worst defense ever in the league but followers of this league knew that before you got here. Why didn’t you?

Stay in Milan. WE’d rather have a player that plays the game. Not a waiter who only services the great players that surround him.

  6. Thank you, Rudy. What David just doesn’t seem to get is that it’s not simply about what Becks wants. He SIGNED A CONTRACT to play for L.A. until 2012, with an exit clause after the 2009 season. If he wants out of that, then Milan needs to pay a sufficient and acceptable sum to make that happen. Milan clearly isn’t willing to do that, so Becks stays in L.A. It’s called BUSINESS, and that’s the way it is! Kudos to Garber for putting the kabash on this nonsense soap opera.

  7. I understand steve T. But he doesn’t care about what you guys thnik it’s his life and his career is almost over he is having the time of his life in Italy..let the man stay. He will never be that great of a player in MLS anyway because he’s not a superstar only a role player and always was. He needs stars around him that can score goals off his beautifull passing, Galaxy or MLS does not fit his qualities. Also, MLS is not respected internationally and Capello knows if Beckham wants to play in the upcoming World Cup MLS is not going to cut it it’s not high level enough..he’ll get his calls but will be on the outside looking in rather than being in AC Milan where he’ll be on the inside just by playing great and at a high level. Again it’s his life anyway he doesn’t want to be here why force him to stay?

  8. Injured? Really? Aren’t we all surprised? Of course he’s injured. He will continue to be injured. Even last year when he played 25 games for the Galaxy, he always seemed to be playing with an injury. I just said a few days ago to someone that if Beckham comes back, Milan and or Beckham will make sure he comes back injured.

  9. Dave, you’ve said nothing we all didn’t already know. Thank you captain obvious. You dont think he knew that the level in MLS was 7 or 8 notches below Serie A, La Liga, EPL? DB is being a douche who signed a legal contract, figured out it didnt suit him, and is now whining in the media for a transfer. For all the talk about how professional he is, that’s not how real pros do it.

  10. It’s simple..the man is used to playing his whole career around world class players in manchester united and real madrid, then he went to the Galaxy where there is a bunch of scrubs he clearly was frustrated there as they never even made the playoffs with him. Now he went to AC Milan reuniting again with world class players why in the world would he want to go back to the Galaxy? Put yourself in his shoes who would you rather play with and where would it be more fun? Italy is soccer crazy America is soccer bored..understand??

  11. I wonder if the whole time Beckham thought he would be in the US only for a little bit. Either he’d have easily won a title and would be allowed to leave because of what he did to help the Galaxy, or else he’d be able to jump a sinking ship and get a contract elsewhere, and LA wouldn’t be able to do anything.

My guess is he never planned to be in LA the whole contract.

  12. If he is, indeed, sold, I say good riddance. He may have generated publicity for the MLS, but on the pitch, he was nothing to write home about.

  13. Let the fool go, even for 3 million. MLS paid nothing to bring him here transfer fee wise and he’s going to whine and cry in his cheerios if he isn’t allowed to stay in Milan.

Just another example of a pampered star who makes a deal and then wants to break it when he wants something new. He hasn’t brought anything to MLS but a bit of media converage (and MLS thursdays is now cancelled because the games he could be in don’t start until at least 10 pm on the east coast).

I can’t stand this fool chasing his last shot of a World Cup. That’s the biggest problem with England – pampered stars who should be kicked out of the national team setup with younger folks being brought in.

Stay in Milan, loser. And f-off.

  14. Becks doesn’t want to come back. LA isn’t letting him go because he’s worth more to them in marketing. Milan thinks they can buy him out for nothing. Sounds like a giant clusterf**k. I think he’ll end up in Milan in the end.

  15. Bring him back to we can do a stadium chant

Or something descriptive to that effect.

  16. F**k him, that’s what he gets for wanting to leave!!

Milan should just pony up the 15 million duckets already and we can get back to improving our league….

  17. How much would it cost Beckham to buy out his contract? Would it be more than the transfer fee they are looking to get? All Beckham is to the Galaxy is a publicity tool. He doesnt do anything on the field for them. He just takes up alot of cap space and doesnt produce anything for them. They need to let him go and be done with it.

  18. Kevin Johnson: Yeah, that makes sense. Milan sacrificed a “key player” (at least during their last couple of games) during the most critical game of their season, making him fake an injury so that they could keep him at a lower fee.

I’m guessing you’re being facetious. At least I hope so for your sake.

  19. Ha. I called him getting injured as soon as the transfer talk started…

Milan obviously isn’t serious about putting up any real money for Beckham. He’s coming back to LA, unless he buys out his own contract.

  20. mmmmmmm…..this injury thing is suspicious to me. I think that they want Beckham to appear injured so tha the Galaxy migh tbe more likely to sell him in fear that he will not play at all for them this season becasue of injuries. I would still have him sit on the bench just for being a little C*NT about the whole thing.

  21. Beckham made a mistake by leaving European play too early, but a mistake for which he is being handsomely compensated. Players seem to think they can negate legal contracts if they just complain enough, which is ridiculous.

That being said, Galaxy (or MLS) should sell Beckham and Donovan while their worth is high.

  22. I think that Becks needs to come back to L.A. NOW, in light of the injury. It is clear that Milan isn’t serious about making a legitimate offer to acquire him, and are trying to get something for nothing.

He should bow out at Milan, REST REST REST, and get ready for the upcoming MLS season. His loan to Milan is only 3 more weeks. What’s the point of trying to play, making the injury worse, then having to sit in L.A. That hurts everybody, L.A. because they won’t have his services, and Becks because he won’t be getting PT, and hence any looks from Capello.

  23. Well that’s just tough noogies, isn’t it, David? It looks like your going to have to use all of that gumption and determination to make lemons out of lemonade like we hear about in all of your adidas commercials. If he’s really the classy professional everyone says he is, then this last contractually obligated year will be no big deal for him, right?

  24. Do we know how much the it would take for Becks to buy his own contract out? I would think he really wants to move NOW, because if he stays, he would have to finish the MLS 2009 season, and not be able to transfer to AC Milan until Jan 2010 correct? I would think he views that as “too late” in the eyes of Capello who might already have the England squad selected for the 2010 world cup, with Becks looking on the from the outside in. If he leaves to Serie A now, then his chances of being in the England picture during the lead up to WC2010 are much greater.

Also, for DP’s — does the league still get a portion of the transfer fee? Or does this all go to the Galaxy since they pay him the big bucks, and not the league… ?

  25. I’m still endlessly disappointed in Beckham right now. He was called up by England during his time in MLS, its not like that would change. If he played for the Galaxy like he plays for Milan, he would get at least 8 goals and 15 assists, even if the players around him aren’t that good.

I’m still curious if LA wanted a player swap at all . . . How does LA not ask for a player like Shevchenko or Ronaldinho that would be a huge upgrade over Beckham as far as on-field production is concerned. With the rest of the pieces put in place, a dynammic attacking player like that could make LA one of the most dangerous teams in the league.

  26. Do they know how severe the injury is and how long he’ll be out? Seems as though that’s the worst thing that could happen as maybe Beckham comes back to MLS and ends up being hurt on and off and then leaves at the end of the season.
