Soccer Sunday: Your Running Commentary

Landon Donovan 1 (Getty Images)

Call it the battle of the American star vs. the man who turned his back on the USA.

Neven Subotic and Borussia Dortmund take on Landon Donovan and Bayern Munich in one of today's top match-ups. Donovan isn't slated to start, but with Miroslav Klose recently suffering an injury that could limit his minutes, Donovan should make more than just a cameo in this key Bundesliga clash.

Today's other top match-up pits red-hot Manchester United against a streaking West Ham United squad as Carlos Tevez returns to Upton Park to face the team he helped escape relegation two years ago.

  1. Come on West Ham. Beat Man U for Liverpool.

Cole is their best chance to score. Why did they let Bellamy leave? He was their best chance to finish in the top half of the table. But even without him they still have a great chance to finish say no.10 or no.11

  2. Why oh why did Dani Guiza leave Real Mallorca for Fenerbache? Real Madrid, Barcelona and even Chelsea wanted him. Why would he go for a big club in a 2nd tier league and i’m reading he’s not even a big hit there.

Well at least he is assured as 3rd striker for Spain in WC qualifying. No competition for that.

  3. 67th minute- Carlton Cole rips a shot from distance after keeping the ball from a sliding challenge, but the shot went wide.

I like the shot, though. West Ham have been not been direct enough as far as putting shots on goal.

  4. I absolutely love the atmosphere at Bundesliga games. Cheap tickets, cheap beer, thousands of safe standing room places ahhhh
Still 1-1 with Dortmund and Bayern. No Donovan

  5. 62nd minute- Goal Man United!!!

Giggs gets played the ball on the left with yards of space. Giggs cuts the ball back twice to go past rushing defenders, and takes a low shot that beats the keeper to his left.

Wonderful play by Giggs, 1-0 United.

  6. 60th minute- Vidic gets a foul called against him for dragging down Carlton Cole. He basically tried yanking him down by his shirt 3 times.

The free kick didn’t come to anything.

On the other side, United earn a corner.

  7. 56th minute- Rafael earns a free kick for United on the right, mostly for running into his defender, but Tevez’s header from it was weak.

  8. 54th minute- West Ham is having another good start to the match this half, but haven’t really gotten a chance to show for it.

    Reply
  9. 49th minute- More pressure by West Ham leads to a chance. Di Micheli was spinning left then right in order to try to shake off defenders, but the ball ended up at the feet of Neill, who took a long shot than Van Der Saar dove to stop.

United finally break the West Ham pressure and earn a corner, which was played out for another corner which was played over everybody.

  10. TheDuece, the 2nd half just started, no Donovan yet, its pretty easy to find that information for yourself (i.e. go to the soccernet gamecast)…

West Ham is starting the 2nd half very positively, though they are pulling some Arseal shennanigans, just take a shot and quit dancing with it!

  11. 2nd Half kicks off, no changes on either side.

46th minute- West Ham with the early pressure in the first half, earn a corner, which is stopped for a Cole foul on Van Der Saar.

  12. Hey, THis Guy, DCM, & MK, what happened with the Bayern commentary!!!
You guys had me until the 24th minute and it was tied….

It must be start of 2nd half, is Landon on???

ANYONE HAVE A STREAM OF BAYERN V DORTMUND?

  13. Half Time, 0-0.

Van Der Saar now has the British record of longest time without conceding a goal.

It’s been a pleasing game to watch from a neutral’s point of view, and a relatively clean one as well.

  14. 45th minute- Cole does well to trap a ball with his chest in the penalty area, but by the time he turns and shoots it is blocked by a defender.

    Reply
  15. 43rd minute- Parker strips Ronaldo and tries to bring the ball forward, but the counterattack fizzles. West Ham eventually wins a corner out of it, but Carlton Cole is called for a foul on Van Der Saar.

  16. My family isn’t interested in watching these games and have the tv with the cable box with the extra channels on it, and I’m not able to find any streams my computer can play, so please keep up with the updates.

  17. 40th minute- Ronaldo pulled the ball back in from the left wing and sent in a dangerous cross from the right wing, which flashed across the goal but Tevez was just out of reach for.

Ronaldo’s crosses have been mostly poor thus far coming from his left foot.

    Reply
  18. 34th minute- Ronaldo was dancing at the left corner of the penalty area before cutting the ball back and playing a cross which was deflected by a West Ham defender. Ronaldo gestures for hand ball but the ref isn’t interested.

  19. 30th minute- Man U earn a free kick from the right flank, and is played on the ground to Scholes, which was mis-hit but deflected into the air by Ronaldo and saved well by the West Ham keeper to his near post!

  20. 25th minute- Collison comes into the box, shifting away from defenders and finds space to play a ball to Cole in the center of the box, but he takes too much time to get off a shot and it all kind of fizzled out. It was definitely disappointing to not at least see a shot out of that.

  21. 23rd minute- United have begun to take control of the game, spending most of the last few minutes with the ball in posession in the West Ham half. Not a solid chance that’s come from it, though.

    Reply
  22. 21st minute- Scholes takes a shot from distance which was deflected. Berbatov poked the ball as it was coming down and trickled it into the net, but he was well offsides so it didn’t count.

    Reply
  23. 15th minute- As the camera just showed, Fabio Capello is watching this match from the stands.

Ferdinand wins the ball in the attacking third, and actually sent in quite a good cross which was headed out by West Ham.

    Reply
  24. 12th minute- Carlton Cole is played past the United defense, and attempted to chip Van Der Saar, who came up with the save.

It looked like Ferdinand was tugging at Cole from behind, but the referee allowed play to go on.

    Reply
  25. 8th minute- Giggs is played in long on the right, then slowed up at the endline waiting for players to get into the box for a cross, but Upson did well to disposses him.

  26. i tune into the bayern dortmund game in the 4th minute, and bayern are down a goal already.

replay show a huge lapse in concentration in bayern centerbacks positioning

hopefully landon can make his mark on this game

  27. 7th minute- Ronaldo slices between two defenders on the left, and sends a low cross in to Tevez who is well placed, but the ball was cleared out by a sliding defender before it could reach him.

  28. 1-0 Dortmund in the first minute… if they are still behind by the half I think that’ll give good reason to bring L-Cakes in early in the 2nd.

  29. 1:20 into the match and Bayern are down 0-1 on a terrible slip up by the center back for Bayern and Dortmund’s Valdez makes the most of it.
