If you are a U.S. national team fan who plans on being in attendance on Feb. 11 when the U.S. team faces Mexico, be sure to bring a red top to wear.

U.S. Soccer is asking American fans to wear red for the match as a show of solidarity, and to help provide a better home-field effect when the teams take the field for the crucial World Cup qualifier.

Here is the statement from U.S. Soccer:

UNCLE SAM WANTS YOU – TO WEAR RED!

U.S. Soccer and Nike are calling on fans across the country to show their support for the U.S. team by wearing red on game day against Mexico. Whether you will be part of the jam-packed crowd at Columbus Crew Stadium or watching in Official U.S. Soccer Bars across the country, put on your favorite red gear and make a statement for the entire world to see.

If you're thinking to yourself "but none of the USA's recent jerseys have been red" you have a point. That doesn't mean you can't bring along a red sweater or shirt to help create an unforgettable atmosphere at Crew Stadium next week (you also have a week to create your own custom-made red USA jersey, so have at it).

What do you think of the idea? Like it? Still going to wear your yellow Crew Jersey or throwback Alexi Lalas denim USA jersey? Thinking of what a sea of red will look like against a few smatterings of green?

  1. Dear USSF, do us all a favor and change our fuggin ugly, boring all white/blue to something with a red jersey so we can stop this fuggin “wear red” charade.

  2. “I don’t have a red jacket and I’m not likely to get one before I get to Columbus on Tuesday”

‘Red body paint is cheaper :)’

A red t-shirt a size or two too big to wear over your jacket ain’t bad either. A couple of bucks max.

  3. I have NEVER understood this call for red from either writers or the USS. There are way too many countries in the world that use red either as a primary or secondary color in their uniforms. There aren’t that many that use navy (darker) blue, and damn near every US kit has included that color in one form or another. Why aren’t we the the dark blue army? France’s Les Bleu’s are medium blue, and the Azzurri’s blue has historically been lighter, but even as its darkened, it hasn’t reached navy/dark blue. That’s the color we should be making a point of showing the world, creating a unique image that becomes our own: US football – the navy wave/swarm/army – pick your choice…

Red is such a terrible color, but I will man up and wear red.

  6. I just checked the weather forecast on Columbus for next Wednesday. Looks like rain and temperatures around 52-53, definitely not what US Soccer wanted when scheduling this game.

Anyways, I know that Columbus atmosphere will definitely make the Mexican team feel the passion of football on American soil.

  7. US Soccer should wise up and produce a red kit. Why should US fans buy white home kits when we’re told to wear red to games?

  8. So many people bitch for the sake of it. If you don’t like it then don’t wear it but don’t make comments like “how kool the Dutch look in their Orange, wish we could do the same…”.

Shut the F.. Up!!! and either wear something Red or be done with it. But please stop with the Bitch at every opportunity crap. No one said it had to be Nike.

IS the American Soccer fan too finicky, or is it that they just won’t buy red US National team gear?

When is the cutoff notice for this RED experiment?

  11. Red Winter Coat! Score! Ill be at the game and Brian a couple posts above has a great point about OSU. Lots of Cincinnati Reds and Indians gear is red as well.

To Evan the opinion held by most Crew fans is to wear US gear, not Crew gear. Yellow shouldnt be a problem at the game

  12. I certainly hope Crew fans don’t wear their yellow to this game, I thought only scummy DCU fans wore club colors to USMNT games.

  16. i love the idea, only color better i think would be red- i would be very disappointed to see yellow columbus jerseys at a US game (any club jersey as matter of fact)

  17. Why don’t they ask us to wear the traditional US jersey? Oh wait…we don’t have one!!!!!! This is what happens when you change the jersey every year. You want atmosphere? Put your heads together, decide on a jersey and stick with it.

  18. As cold as it probably will be, it doesn’t matter that a jersey is a differnt color; it will probably will be coverd up with many layers. Just find something red to wear as an outerlayer
