With four teams in the eight-team Champions League quartefinal draw, the English Premier League was bound to have an all-England match-up emerge and a familiar one was chosen. Chelsea will face Liverpool in the Champions League quarterfinals in a match-up that has become all too familiar in Europe.

Manchester United fans will be happy to know the Red Devils drew Portuguese side FC Porto while Arsenal will meet Villarreal in what should be a wide-open affair. Bayern Munich will take on FC Barcelona in what could be the most entertaining series in the quarterfinals.

The Champions League quarterfinals kick off with the first leg on April 7th and 8th, with the second leg taking place on April 14th and 15th.

What do you think of the draw? Excited to see Chelsea-Liverpool face each other in Europe again? Think Manchester United got lucky? Hoping Barcelona destroys Bayern Munich?

  2. the top four in England should play a tournament and the winner should just get a bye into the quarters and let the rest stay home.

  4. Liverpool and Chelsea again. Thank god Arne-Riise isn’t still here. the Reds will crush Chelsea. No worries. But would be good to see Bayern Munich, Villarreal, Porto and Liverpool in the semi’s to change things up. Though the only team possible of making the semi’s assurable are Barca and Man U.

  5. well, this is the problem with random draws in uneven competitions. Someone’s always going to get screwed. It’s also the fun of it. All of a sudden teams can’t coast a round, knowing their opposition is weaker. It makes every round meaningful in some way, as opposed to foregone conclusions for most teams. Can you imagine how much fun an NCAA tourney with a one-time random draw would be? Seed everyone in each region and then hit the random button. No longer is your reward for your first tournament apearance a 40 point pasting at the hands of sown team of future pros from Raleigh-Durham. Someone has to play Duke in the first round, why not a team better than Binghampton? Duke has to beat Pitt eventually, why not now, instead of in two weeks? Much more exciting, don’t you think?

  6. hahaha…the fix is in for United?! I don’t really need to repeat everything that’s already been said in objecting to that hilarious claim. I just wanted to add my laughter to the people who actually think United is being handed the trophy. How quickly they forget United’s last opponent. haha. Classic.

  7. How is it a fix? United had to face Inter in the last round. If there was a fix, it was against those two teams. Bayern got to face Sporting and I didn’t here anyone saying how lucky Bayern was or how they somehow fixed the tournament.

  8. Okay great. What about Liverpool who played Madrid, now get Chelsea. Or how about Chelsea who beat Juve and now have Liverpool. Perhaps we should talk about Arsenal who got a crap Roma side and now play Villareal, who lets be honest are the second worst team left. Maybe we can talk about Villareal who beat Panithanikos and now play Arsenal (probably the 3rd worst team remaining). My problem is that Manu got drawn with teams 6-8 remaining in the competition. While the other side of the “bracket” if you will gets 2-5.

My comment that the thing is fixed was tounge in cheek.

My suggestions were what I think would improve the competition, get more teams from different leagues playing each other, and create more fair way to arrange th teams.

  9. KB: Chelsea and Liverpool met the past two years in the Semis. since there are only 4 teams in the semis, you are pretty likely to meet the same ones over and over again.

there are 8 teams left. last year, 5 of these teams were the same (and ManU played Barca in this round, obviously another easy draw) the year before, 4 of these same teams were here. when you keep having the same teams, you are going to keep getting the same matches, especially since teams from the same country can’t meet in the round of 16.

  10. I guessed there was a fix last round by forcing the English squads to play three Italian squads + Real Madrid. But even so, they passed with flying colors. As far an Man Utd getting an easy path, they overcame Mourinho’s Inter (recall that Sir Alex has a shite record against Jose) last round and Barca (no slouch, even last season) last year in the semis.

  11. I’m a Liverpool fan and I am so fed up with drawing Chelsea for the 5th year in a row! We certainly have nothing to be afraid of but Guus Hiddink is one of the best and Chelsea have been very good and impressive under him.

  12. oh please, A.S. Barca and Bayern had the easiest draw last time out (seriously, Lyon and Sporting?) ManU had Inter, remember? who would you rather play, the second place team in Portugal or the three time defending Serie A champions?

but yes, the fix is definitely in…

  13. Ugh…I’m sorry I became a really huge soccer fan 4 years ago and loved the CL. I laughed at those who talked about the draw being rigged. Now I think there actually could be something to it. I mean really…Chelsea v. Liverpool again. 4 times in 5 years is no random draw. Also, ManU gets the easiest draw year in and year out.

This is getting boring. As a Liverpool fan I would have taken any European side. I hate seeing English teams remaining. Even as an EPL fan I wouldnt be totally against more difficult qualifying process for the 4th place team in the EPL.

I also, think it would be interesting to review the draw process. Maybe you make either add stipulations whereby if you played last year you cannot meet until the semifinals. I would rather they seed the teams based on UEFA co-efficients. Simply 1 plays 8, 4 plays 5 in the first grouping. The second grouping contains the other teams. I just think it makes it more fair, and makes it much more entertaining.
