Soccer Saturday: Your Running Commentary

RioRooney (AP)

While many of you are looking forward to the first full slate of Major League Soccer games, there are still plenty of American soccer fans who are still enthralled by the soccer going on in the rest of the world.

Before you enjoy some of tonight's MLS action, there are plenty of matches in Europe and South America to enjoy. Whether it is Fulham-Manchester United, Tottenham-Chelsea or Roma-Juventus, there is something good to watch before tonight's MLS matches take place.

If you will be watching today's soccer on TV, please feel free to share your thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below. MLS fans should take note that I will be posting a seperate MLS commentary post later today so look out for that.

Enjoy today's action.

  1. Wow. 89th minute. Rooney is sent off. He punches the Fulahm corner flag after yelling at the ref. No replay on what he did. But Man U are falling apart after having a handful of clear cut chances in front of the goal.

  3. Ronaldo on the ground crying AGAIN.

82 minute-Dempsey off for Gera. Definetely need some fresh legs to cope with the box to box sprinting needed to keep up with the pace of this game.

  4. 77 minute-Zamora comes out, Kamara comes in

fulham need to stay tight on their marks or Man U is going to continue to move the ball around with ease.

  5. @ northzax,

You didn’t factor in the exchange rate with the prices of jerseys and beer. Also 7 pounds is not really 7 dollars. When I was in Europe, especially London, things were very expensive, almost 2 dollars to a pound.

  6. Again, Swartzer is just playing above the gods today.

Northzax, the pound is worth around 1.5-2 times the amount of a dollar. So 90 pounds would be around 180 dollars.

  7. Northzax,

I haven’t done the math, yet, or really examined each of your points. But your post was well thought out and relevant.

I nominate your post as post of the week. Nay, post of the month.

  8. If Fulham can pull out the win and if Blackburn beat West Ham today, that will really help the Whites’ cause to make it into Europe (seventh place). That’d be awesome.

  9. MLS needs to expand to 20teams by 2013 adding a team in St.Louis and Atlanta/Miami and strengthen it.

Raise the cap. Exclude the DP salary from the cap. Increase the squad to add to club depth. Use more PR to get the team across to all soccer fans in the usa

ok, does your local club have your credit card information on file? cause your season tickets just went up $20/game. let’s say we add another $5m to the team’s budget next season. that’s not counting construction costs for the new stadium. and let’s assume that the average attendance for the regular season is about the same, 11,654. with 16 home matches, this means we can expect roughly 186,464 fans will buy tickets this year. make sense so far?

ok, so we have to make up $5m on the backs of 186,500 (we’ll round up) fans. that’s an increase of $26/ticket. you’re cool with that, right? figure a $20/ticket increase and they’ll make up the difference charging you 8 bucks for a beer.

oh, and then there is the $1000 seat license at RB Park, you’ll be wanting to pay that on your card as well?

oh, and good news, you can now watch all away matches! if it’s not the game of the week on the Deuce (and you’ve already seen that one) you have the honor of purchasing the complete PPV package, it’s only $150 for the season, that’s less than ten bucks a game! cheap. you’ll need the new team jersey, of course, they now start at $120, personalized is $145.

we hear from a lot of people that some MLS teams could compete in the Coke. great, let’s compare, shall we? I am a fan of two teams, DCU and Reading, and have attended multiple matches at both RFK and the Madjeski. my tickets at RFK are 23 bucks a game. the equivalent tickets at the Madjeski are 55 pounds. besides that, prices are only slightly higher in Reading than in DC. beers are about on par, 7 bucks or 7 pounds. my DCU jersey was about $80, my Reading jersey was about 95 pounds. but ok, even if you count them at par, they’re about the same. the big difference comes from the fact that there are 10 more home fixtures (cups and season) for double the price at par (and in reality, almost quadruple the price on the open market)

did you know the Giants are charging $20k, per seat, for the seat licenses in the new stadium? you have to pay that just for the ‘privilege’ of buying new season tickets at twice the cost your old ones were.

so for everyone who wants MLS teams to spend even more, to double or triple expenses, this is how teams make money. we pay for it. you want MLS to be truly ‘major league’ get used to paying major league prices. there is no TV money, unless we all pay PPV. there is no real sponsorship money, so it comes from fans.

  10. go fulham, i love chelsea, but id be more than happy to see liverpool win if it means man u doesnt.
Dempsey needs to seal this one.

  11. Messi is by far the best player in the world. Now if Liverpool can win the title or the CL or hell even both, Gerrard and Torres will also be in the running for top3.

But right now i’d say Messi is the best followed by David Villa and Samuel Eto’o and Van Der Sar.

Ibrahimovic is a top striker but disappears in CL matches or international matches.

  12. Fulham are tapping that Man U ass.

Dempsey just shook Ferdinand and Evans.

Please let him score a goal or 2 to let Fulham win.

  13. Zamora having a good game so far, forcing several saves from Van der Sar. Dempsey’s touch seems a little off, and he’s hit a couple hard shots over the bar.

  14. Yes Fulhammmmm. Come on Dempsey. Score a goal. Be a giantkiller. Dempsey has 5goals in 22matches. Not bad for a midfielder. AJ has 7goals in 24matches and Zamora has 2 goals in 26matches.

  18. that’s right MLS and US soccer is what matters the most at least to me. World football is fine but for all you eurosnobs there’s other places to go on the net, Ives I’m glad mls is back I don’t know what is it about it but I’ve been hooked for years! Its different from all the rest of the “predictable” leagues. Jacob A; all I know is that in Argentina they do show some MLS games mostly crew games because of GBS.. But they do show the thurs ESPN games too.
