John Carver has resigned as head coach of Toronto FC.

The former Newcastle manager's resignation was announced by the club on Saturday, the day before TFC takes on the Kansas City Wizards. The club stated that Carver resigned for personal reasons.

Carver's departure comes less 15 months after he was named head coach, taking over for Mo Johnston, who remains as the club's director of soccer.

Toronto assistants Chris Cummins and Nick Dasovic will oversee the KC match on Sunday. A decision on Carver's replacement is expected to come early next week.

So what happened exactly? There is no word yet other than "personal reasons" cited by the club, but sources have suggested for a long time now that Carver would leave Toronto FC for Newcastle United if and when Alan Shearer ever became manager. With Shearer now the Newcastle manager, and in a fierce battle to avoid relegation, don't be shocked to see Carver on the Newcastle bench as part of Shearer's staff.

What do you think of the news? Think Carver was a good head coach? Who do you see replacing Carver?

  1. A couple points:

-One Canadian history. No, it wasn’t founded in order to not be american, but there were fears of American expansion north, and the Brits wanted Canada to defend itself without need for British aid.
And if you think about it…who was going to invade Canada, other than the US?

-MLS can be very bad at handling things. The refs suck, end of story. So when Carver goes off on the refs, he is telling the truth…the league should be doing things to improve reffing.
I would issue the fine all the same, but you have to be honest with teams/players, and yourself. You fine him for hurting the reputation of the league, but not for attacking the refs.

-To “M”. If your national program was run by volounteer soccer moms and dads, you’d lose every game too.

  2. So what if Toronto soccer fans want to act European? Basketball fans all over the world want to be American. No harm in trying to be like the best. I’m a Crew fan from Ohio and will say that no MLS city supports its team like Toronto does. American soccer fans refuse to support an American soccer league, but Canadian fans will. I think that says it all.

  4. Canada sucks so bad at soccer. Their U-17 had to beat Cuba to stay alive in the qualifying for the U-17 World Cup.

Here’s how sad they are. They were up 1-0 in the game with 10 minutes and with Cuba down 2 men. They subsequently lost 2-1 while playing up 2 men. PATHETIC!

  5. Barry thinks “Carlsburg” ?sp? is a British beer. nuff said about that. According to him, if you enjoy watching soccer from a league other than MLS you are a “poseur,” wtf? MLS has soccer content from euro leagues on their very own website. I guess MLS brass are poseurs too.

  6. Hey, I have respect for both what Europe and America has brought to the game of football, I am proud to know my descendants came from the British Isles, and am also proud to help coach a soccer team in Pensacola,Florida. I would love to get the opportunity but I know that would never ever work out

  7. Barry, you’re a no-nothing douchebag. Most Torontonians are second-generation north Americans, not ‘europosers.’ In fact, the very concept of a ‘europoser’ reeks of a sense of profound insecurity. They support their team better than whatever podunk dunghole you live in, so get a colour TV and get over it.

Geez, next thing you’ll be buying larger truck rims to compensate for your hair loss.

  8. Back to the original topic. Don’t see it as a huge loss. Mediocre coach, questionable leader–constant whining about the officials, calling your players out in public as he did to Cunningham is classless.
