New York Red Bulls waive Dufty

Dufty

BY DYLAN BUTLER

Alec Dufty acquitted himself well, making two saves and earning a clean sheet after coming on for injured Danny Cepero in his Major League Soccer debut at hostile Robertson Stadium on Saturday night.

The rookie keeper's reward? On Monday he was waived by the New York Red Bulls. According to sources, Dufty was released to make room for El Salvadorian Alfredo Pacheco, whose signing is expected to be announced  as early as Tuesday.

With Jon Conway sitting out the final game of his 10-game ban, Dufty came through in a pinch after Cepero was knocked out of the game after suffering a Grade One concussion on a collision with Kei Kamara. The free agent out of the University of Evansville will not be out of work too long, though. According to sources, Dufty is off to Seattle where the Sounders are desperate for goalkeeping help for this weekend's game against Chivas USA.

Kasey Keller is serving a one-game suspension after being sent off in Saturday's 1-0 loss to Kansas City and No. 2 Chris Eylander is rehabbing from a PCL strain in his right knee. That leaves Ben Dragavon, who played the final 61 minutes against the Wizards, as the only available keeper for Sounders FC.

The Red Bulls needed to free up a roster spot for Pacheco and Dufty, although the timing is a bit strange, is understandably the odd man out with Conway returning to the fold this week. That would have given New York four keepers (Terry Boss being the other).

What do you make of the move? Is there another player you wanted to see dropped? Are you excited that Pacheco will finally join the Red Bulls? Seattle fans, are you pumped to bring in a keeper who played well on his debut? Let us know.

  1. I had the pleasure of watching Dufty play at Evansville and he has size, talent and no lack of confidence. I won’t be surprised if he catches on someplace soon or even if he gives Eyelander a run for his money in Seattle. Sigi has an eye for young talent and a penchant for hanging onto to it. Don’t forget he shipped out Busch in favor of Hesmer.

  2. This is the Good The Bad and the Ugly

The Good Poor Dufty will definitely have the last laugh. The kid has talent and good for him going to Seattle to learn from Keller That’s good!

The Bad once again Red Bulls shot themselves BADLY in the foot Come on waive Khano Smith,Petrravalo or Oduro before this guy or Boss no one has seen him.

The Ugly time to call it the way it is bloody Ugly The RB simply stink and JSO along with Agoos appears clueless. We are buying OLD dogs JPA looks washed up and Celedes will be 33..hello anyone haer of Freddy in Seattle? Give me someone who understands this team.. Pleeeze Speaking of UGLY can anyone tell me why it has taken 10 years & still counting ( watch another delay next year) to get our own stadium while the Mets and Yanks did it in one?

By the time we get our own Stadium the RB fans will have given up all hope and that is really UGLY.

  3. Dufty was better than cepero in communication. This move is great for dufty and bad for red bulls. Osorio does not know what he is doing, as well as the red bulls organization. osorio chooses to keep a narcissistic crap hole of a goalkeeper in Conway. osorio if you like him so much send Conway seattles’ way…. oh yeah, they would not take him, cause…. he f**kin SUCKS (even on steroids).

Wow it seems like every move this “team” makes make no sense whatsoever.

13 years of mediocrity makes some of us try to let the team know our views. I would have traded boss and kept dufty because of the promise he showed, yes by doing his job but by also being able to come into a clutch situation and handle the defence with confidence.

  4. I’m thinking that the Dynamo match will be Dufty’s “Field of Dreams” moment. Will he ever play in the MLS again? Well, he’ll always have Houston. Good luck to you, Duffman.

  5. Had Dufty not played this past weekend, how many of you would be complaining.

Christ! I know RB makes a lot of dumb personnel decisions (guaranteed contracts, hiring JCO, etc). But this isn’t one of them. You already have two keepers with more experience on the roster. The kid played well for 82 minutes, Cepero played well for 4 games last season what has that proven for this year.

Stop your bitching – good decision in my eyes. Best of luck to Dufty, listen to whatever Keller tells you.

  6. I agree with sayervillefc: why not Osorio instead? What I saw of Duffman the other night I liked. He seemed to be sharp, focused, and most importantly confident–something that (sorry) Capero is often not. Wtf is going on with our season?!

  7. Metrostar 4 life and Northzax, I actually agree with the basis of your opinions. But you are whiny little beetches. You both need to go find new clubs to support, good riddance to bad rubbish.

This is an awful move by the Red Bulls but are you guys retarded? Conway and Cepero. Dufty played PART OF ONE GAME, and did his job. You guys are effing morons. Do either of you think Dufty has a future with this club or will be a starter anywhere in MLS this season?

Honestly…it’s a bad decision by RBNY but you guys need to chill the f out, you are embarrassing the real fans who realize it’s not that bad to cut your third choice keeper, even if it’s not necessarily a smart roster move. Jesus.

  8. Kid got the chance to show his wares, that’s one thing the club did for him. Now he gets to go sell himself with a clip reel at the mls level at least. Time to find a new club or go spend a season in USL and try again. Tough business this.

  9. I swear only the dam red bulls could do this, bunch of idiots honestly we deserve to lose every week in and week out. You would think we would cut some other players who ARE TERRIBLE off our team. Way to go again, red bulls. You guys never cease to amaze me with your stupidity in the front office.

  10. I agree with Dan. There so many options to choose from!

However, having four goalkeepers on a roster is dumb, but we have a dumb coach so….

  11. Dufty will only be in Seattle for one week. Chris Eylander is currently recovering from a sprained knee and then Keller will be back from suspension. It sounds like he’s either destined for the MLS goalkeeper pool or the USL.

  12. The kid should be happy…. Seattle is a huge step up from RBNY:

    Invloved ownership

    Energetic fanbase

An experienced keeper to apprentice under

A less expensive city to live in

A better coach who understands the American player

A team that isn’t eternally jinxed

  13. Hey, DC Josh – are you moving to St Loo with your team or are you rockin’ the ghetto still once they are gone?

  14. How do young American players get the chance to become true professionals, if MLS clubs are unwilling to be patient with their development and replace them with foreign talent the first chance they get? Dufty did a great job for NYRB and certainly didn’t deserve to be released. I recall that the development of an American league was a FIFA mandate for awarding us the 1994 WC. If MLS isn’t careful, it runs the risk of becoming the new NASL and undoing all the good it has done for developing the American game.

  15. while i think it is bad timing, it was the rite choice because boss is on the injured reserve (does anyone know when he is back), and boss also looks to be a very promising keeper, big like conway yet still young and athletic like cepero.

  16. I’m assuming Dufty probably had prior talks with Red Bull’s management about the possibility of being released. I doubt it came as a shock. But it does catch you by surprise since he played so well this week. If he resurfaces in Seattle he’s definitely made a move up in class. I was lucky enough to see Dufty play at Evansville last season and the kid showed class. I was shocked he wasn’t drafted. Nonetheless, if Seattle doesn’t work out I could easily see a USL club calling. The kid can play and I hope he gets his chance.

  17. I’m just confused. Isn’t the obvious choice to waive Juan “Hardman” Pietravallo? Or does NYRB “waive” him bi-weekly with his yellow/red card suspensions?

  18. Get rid of Boss, what has he done? Dufty is taller than him and has more experience. Why do we keep Terry Boss? If anything Boss would bebetter suited for Seattle because he is from that area. I am very disappointed

  19. Amazing how a little “egg on the face” has speeded up the Pacheco signing. Does anyone think we’ll ever find out who dropped the ball on his signing?

  20. it makes sense that it would be Dufty to get waived. he did well against Houston but i don’t think it’s any better than Cepero would have done in all honesty. And if Dufty gets to go to Seattle and be taught by Kasey Keller than it’s not so bad for him either. Sad to see him go but the very best of luck to him!

  21. This one will come back to bite RBNY in the ass.

Watching a replay of his performance clearly shows the kid has more command of the box than most veterans in MLS. Command is the hardest thing to get in a keeper.

  22. I guess this move makes sense as in all honesty, Cepero has shown as much promise as Dufty has.

On another note, although I was never that impressed with NY last year and completely believe they overachieved all season, their performance this year has been shocking. I really hope Celedes(sp?) is the real deal and that Pacheco fits somewhere in the lineup. This team is too talented to be doing THIS poorly.

  23. Seattle doesn’t need another GK unless Eylander is not ready to be on the 18 man roster on Saturday. Even then Eylander is the future starter for the Sounders with Ben being the backup for Eylander once Keller retires.

  24. Ives i need your help on this one?

What’s going on with the Redbulls? A team that has that much of talents and speed look like CRAP.I’m asking myself what kindna style are they playing. they look like they’re playing tennis table or ping pong style, no rythm, and no passion. Richards need to come off the bench. Even Seattle coach SIGI said NY HAS the speed to outrun anybody in the league but Osorio use it in a different way….please talk to them

  25. if I’m Dufty, I think I’m estactic about going to Seattle. Learning from Keller??? That sounds to me like a huge boost from New York.

  26. Seattle shouldn’t need a keeper beyond this weekend, as regular back-up Eylander should be fit very soon (he is playing with the reserves today) and Keller will be back.

  27. I’m not surprised. Dufty got a lucky break to get some minutes and acquitted himself excellently, but with the reduced roster sizes this year there was no way NY could carry him. Which is a shame, because he looked like he had good potential.

Dufty was developmental though, so is Pacheco coming in as developmental or is someone else moving down and Pacheco coming in as senior?

Boss cannot be waived at this point because he is still injured/rehabbing.

Dufty was a stop-gap ‘keeper until Conway could come back. I’m happy Seattle is giving him a look, because he should be playing somewhere.
