Soccer Sunday: Your Running Commentary

Gonzalo Higuain (AP)

It is a relatively light day of soccer action this Sunday, but as always, there are still some matches worth taking in from all over the globe.

Real Madrid returns to action today for the first time since its stunning comeback victory vs. Getafe (and first since Pepe's freakout). Toronto FC is back in action for the first game of the post-John Carver era, and yes, D.C. United has made the trip up I-95 for its grudge match vs. the New York Red Bulls.

If you are watching any of today's soccer matches on TV, please feel free to share your thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below.

Enjoy the action (Check out today's schedule is after the jump).

  1. Many players have relegation clauses, but that doesn’t mean they will definitely be sold. It only sets a bar. If a team comes calling and meet the set price, then BMG would be legally obligated to sell. If not, they can do whatever they want (including selling him for less than the clause calls for, should they choose).

  2. For what it’s worth, another terrible result for BMG. A month ago they looked like a safe bet to stay up. Now, it’s looking like relegation is in the cards. They aren’t even in the playoff spot anymore.

I wouldn’t be shocked to see Bradley stay with the team if they go down, despite what a few American journo’s seem to think. He’s had a few good performances, but he isn’t the hot commodity that is ready to contribute to a better team that some seem to think. Not yet, anyway. His best match of the year came for the national team, and there aren’t any top half teams from the big leagues that are going to commit to him on that alone.

  3. Bradley played in a 3 man central midfield role with Paauwe and Galasek.

Looks from the average position and heat map features that Moenchengladbach played a kind of 4-3-2-1 with Marin and Baumjohann under Matmour. Also from those features it appears Bradley didn’t get too many touches (especially in the first half), with his heat map fairly contained and light. He was involved in a couple of the attacking moves in the second half.

That is something I find peculiar about Bradley he is not really the best attacker or the most technical player but one thing he has that is evident is determination and sometimes thats all you need to get goals.

  5. He did play pretty high up, but ESPN positions are terrible. Check out the average position and heat map in the “Match Action” section on Soccernet.

  6. I just saw on Espnsoccernet that Micheal Bradley was used as a RCF (Right Center Forward?) in their game today? That is interesting if what I read was correct.

  7. With Sevilla up 1-0 in the 20th, Ray Hudson tells us that Sevilla is playing better than their coach “could have believed in his wildest, wettest dreams”.

  8. Either TFC or KC will be tops in the east depending on the result today. Which is nuts because the Fire has so much more talent and has not lost. But Fire will still have a game in hand on both TFC and KC and they have played four of their first six on the road, with next two at home.

  9. It’s almost 90 degrees here in NYC today. That Red Bulls/DC United match is going to be as slow as the LA/NY match from last July. Most fit team will win today.
