Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Carlos Bocanegra (Reuters)

by GIANFRANCO PANIZO

Goals for a pair of national team starters, coupled with a key victory for the team of another starter, made the past weekend a memorable one for Americans Abroad.

With the Coupe de France up for grabs, Carlos Bocanegra gave Rennes a lead this weekend when he got on the end of a free kick from the right side in the 70th minute. Bocanegra's goal would not stand as the game winner though as Rennes would surrender two goals. Bocanegra played 90 minutes in the 2-1 defeat to Guingamp.

Oguchi Onyewu also scored this weekend, netting a similar goal to cap the scoring in Standard Liege's 2-0 win over Club Brugge. Onyewu's powerful header in the 72nd minute was also curled in from a free kick on the right flank before he hit it over the goal line which resulted in chants of "Onyewu" from the Standard supporters.

The American with the most to cheer about after this weekend is midfielder MIchael Bradley. Bradley and Borussia Moenchengladbach raised themselves out of the relegation zone with three games remaining after they found a goal in the 90th minute to defeat Schalke 04, 1-0.

What do you think of these performances? Stunned that Bocanegra and Rennes lost the final? Happy to see Bocanegra in form? Where do you see Onyewu headed for in the summer? Think Michael Bradley and Borussia Moenchengladbach can avoid relegation?

  1. Is Eddie Johnson improving? Do you think he may see anytime with Fulham in the future? a terrible move by him to go Fulham, I think he should have stayed in the MLS.

  2. Great to see many Yanks abroad playing in critical matches. Too bad Cardiff blew it down the stretch. The playoff exposure and experience would have been great for Eddie Johnson. Reading vs Cardiff in the final at Wembley would have been nice to see. Possibly the biggest match weekend for Yanks abroad to date when you consider the critical role they played in title pushes, relegation battles, tournament finals and battles for promotion last weekend.

  3. BTW – anyone catch the Prem Review show? Deuce didn’t score a goal, but definitely factored into 2. He looks noticeably stronger to me this year, holding off defenders, bringing balls straight up the gut, and mixing it up in the penalty area.

I have been really impressed – curious to know if Fulham fans feel he’s been key to their Europa League candidacy? I’d say yes.

  4. Froboy –

No. What will benefit Bradley in the long run is playing in a top European League. Just because M’gladbach gets relegated, doesn’t mean they’ll sell Bradley. Considering they’d be good candidates to come right back up, I doubt they’d be rushing to sell a 20-year old starter that they just splashed cash to bring in.

I’d rather they stay up than run the risk of Bradley having to play in the 2. Bundesliga for even a year.

  5. someone hit on a good point, we should use the Gold Cup to call up a bunch of these players. If nothing else, it could mean the likes of Hejduk and Ching can stay with thier MLS team after and before the Confed Cup.

  6. way to go Edu, making the terps proud, wouldn’t it be better for Moenchengladbach to go down and then more than likely Bradley goes to a better team?

  7. Ives,

I don’t regularly follow MLS, and I’m sure there are a number of people like me.

Any thought to a similar format featuring players in the National Team pool who play domestically? Might be something good for the Summer break.

  8. Anyone know why Matt Taylor does not start let alone be a sub?

In 21 games this season, he has 7 goals and 2 assists which is very impressive

  9. Really, I should start my own blog? Not sure how that will help me learn about american’s playing in Denmark. Maybe, if I want to know how Feilhaber’s playing, I should go to Denmark myself and watch him play in person. I could then twitter about it. It would be a twitter sensation.

Or Gianno here could tell us about Feilhaber’s game last week, and everyone would be happy.

  10. yeah Jemal Johnson is on the bench cause he hasn’t signed a new deal with MK Dons and is in limbo right now. Yes he should be given a look at the Gold Cup team.

  11. Are there still people that think Jamal Johsnon, sitting on the bench of a third tier team in England, should be playing for the US National team?

He and that new kid at Everton both.

  13. EDU…EDU…EDU…

With only 2 weeks left until MNT camp before the packed June schedule, I’m getting worried about Jozy and Beas still dealing with injuries. We really need them in our starting XI. Does anyone who follow their teams closely know more details about them?

  14. In all the emotion and complaint, no one noticed Sal Zizzo got….5 minutes. I still think that he’s a major part of USA’s future attack. Gold Cup call up anyone?

  15. Since denmark’s games always appear to be on weekdays, why don’t you say what happened in last week’s game instead of just saying “Aarhus play ___ on Monday.” Then we would learn whether/how the americans abroad played.

  16. Preston Zimmerman has been released by Kapfenberg because he was trialing in England without telling them and missed practices. he should be removed until he latches onto another team.
