If you were hoping to see Maurice Edu in action for the U.S. national team this summer, then you will be disappointed to know that the midfielder will be sidelined for an extended period of time as he recovers from a knee injury.
Edu, who suffered the knee injury in Rangers' season finale against Dundee United, is scheduled to miss at least three months after undergoing successful knee surgery to fix damaged ligaments on Wednesday.
The injury not only leaves Edu out for the start of Rangers' next season, but also for the United States' busy summer, which includes the Confederations Cup, Gold Cup and the World Cup qualifier in Azteca Stadium against Mexico on Aug 12.
What do you think about Edu's injury? Should he leave the physical SPL? Is this injury going to hurt his chances of making the World Cup roster in 2010?

What does God have against U.S. Soccer?
It Sucks. It seems everytime we get a player who is starting to do good overseas they get hurt.
AofD- thats what I thought at first, but then I learned taht friendlies aren’t even recorded as far as FIFA goes, and thus the games take place without FIFA’s consent or even care. For this reason, those players who played in friendlies aren’t cap-tied at all.
🙁
Godspeed on the recovery Mo
he’ll be back strong next season.. hopefully he will recover fully and get his starting position right back… he shouldn’t leave unless a team needs a starting midfielder. i hope surgery goes well and wish him all the luck. I was looking forward to seeing him in south africa and star in the gold cup. I thought him and torres would both make good options next to bradley, i was hoping to see a comptetition for the spot! bleh, more pablo and sacha now…
Ben, I don’t think you have that exactly right. Games played for the full national team cap tie a player, just not youth games.
Relax, thanks to FIFA’s revocation of the dual national “you have to make your choice by the time you turn 21” rule, Jermaine Jones of Schalke 04 is eligible for the USA because he hasn’t played in an official FIFA match. (Friendlies don’t count).
Ives, How will this rule affect the USA?
GUTTED.
I just hope he has a great recovery and gets back into Rangers gear before it’s too long.
Damn. Heel up kid.
Ok. The NT outlook just got a bit worse.
I agree with iasthai. Now it’s a question of
who will step up.
Unfortunate, he was primed to make a strong case to be a regular starter for the team given his form and the lack thereof of other center mids ahead of him.
Here’s to hope that Feilhaber, Clark or anybody will step up in a big way.
Looks like a high of 66, low of 57 and either showers/scattered TStorms Saturday for the game.
NO, he should not leave the SPL. He’s in good favor with a good team that is developing his game. He’s also most importantly getting PT from them, unlike other Americans abroad. Leaving would be foolish.
Injuries happen…that’s the game.
Next topic??
Spector hasn’t played DM at West Ham since Curbishley was sacked, I say just get him on the field at RB, no need to play him out of position…
Bad news for Edu, hopefully he doesn’t lose his place at Rangers…
Suddenly our cluttered midfield is much more open for more players and speculation. Praying for a nice night Saturday.
I’m not worried. Pablo can fill in for him adequately.
Oh, wait…
It’s way too early for anyone’s WC chances to be in jeopardy b/c of injury. If he has another season like this, Edu should have no worries.
From a Rangers perspective, thankfully we don’t have to qualify for Europe, otherwise Edu would be missed in those August qualification games.
Ouch, this hurts.
Maurice is a perfect fill in for Michael Bradley, without losing much. Looks like Torres just became more important.
too bad, I really have enjoyed watching him play. I was hoping the confederations cup would be a good showcase for him.
bummer….any thoughts on a Torres-Spector CM pairing Saturday? Spector has shown well at times as a CDM for West Ham
Agreed that SPL is rougher than most leagues. Seems to be populated by frustrated Rugby players.
Put Dempsey in the center…seriously
This is a bummer. After a frustrating start to his time in Scotland he has really progressed and I was looking forward to seeing him play this summer with the nats. I think it would be foolish if Bradley ruled him out of the WC for this; he’s a quality player.
When it rains, it pours. Bad week to be a yank. Here’s hoping for a breakout performance from whoever Bob Bradley starts in central MF on Saturday. Torres/Feilhaber/Donovan/Mastroeni . . .who’s it gonna be?
I think the Scottish league is full of hacks.
I hope he recovers well.
Playing for Rangers was not good for Beasley’s health also.
Dammit.
well that sucks
Edu instead of Pablo would have been nice…
To be honest, I don’t think he should leave the SPL. It’s probably the perfect level for him and matches his style of play well.
Players get injuries. I kinda feel like the US has been typically fortunate to avoid key injuries as of late. Since Edu hasn’t really been a mainstay in our national team (i.e. a Bocanegra, Donovan, Bradley, etc) I can’t really see this affecting his chances of making the WC2010 roster unless, all of a sudden, we develop two world-class center midfielders.
What a pity. Here’s to a speedy recovery.
