Twellman named MLS Player of the Week

TaylorTwellman (AP)

New England Revolution striker Taylor Twellman scored his first two goals of the 2009 season, including his 100th career goal, to help the Revs beat the New York Red Bulls, 4-0, on Sunday. The performance earned Twellman MLS Player of the Week honors.

Twellman became the youngest player to score 100 goals (29 years, 100 days) and scored 100 in the fastest time (174 games).

Twellman has worked his way back from a neck injury that sidelined him since late last season, but he looks ready to get back to his old goal-scoring ways.

What do you think of Twellman's comeback? Think he will reclaim his place as one of the league's top strikers? See him getting back into the national team picture?

  1. After that lame flop that he took against DC United, I don’t even want to see that Dude’s face. They should pull his University of Maryland Terp card for that act.

  2. I am a Red Bulls season ticket holder so no hometown bias here…but it is an absolute travesty and an indictment of US Soccer that Taylor Twellman has all of 29 appearances for the National Team and Landon Donovan has over a hundred despite being two years younger. Twellman’s strike rate has always been impressive. I understand that he has been injured for much of the last year and that is reason enough to leave him off the national squad, but he should have more like 100 caps and not a measly 29…pathetic coaching and management on the senior level.

  3. I am glad to see him back, for the sake of MLS. He’s scored a lot of highlight-quality goals. And I was afraid that he would be permanently sidelined with a nagging injury – see Olsen, Ben.

As for the man personally, well, I still resent the way he took the Fire out of the playoffs on an extremely dangerous bicycle kick in the box… but at least he didn’t dive to get it!

USMNT – I don’t think so. And I don’t think any of his former overseas suitors are going to come calling anytime soon either.

  4. MLS forwards must be licking their chops to get a chance to go at this RB defense.

Hey Ives a comment on Osorio and Agoos and what you think about the job they’re doing would be great.

  5. It’s great to see him back on the field, especially after his performance against New York; the Revolution are a much better team when both he and Ralston are healthy and playing together.

At this point, it’s something of a moot point with respect to the USMNT; I don’t see Bradley calling him up even if the standard players in the pool aren’t performing unless its for something like the Gold Cup. Even then, I’d say the odds are quite slim.

  6. Twellman still suffers from headaches and nausea during the week between games and his status for games is based on game day health status. Given that, he still shouldn’t be added to the Gold Cup roster. Perhaps qualifying games in October if the US has already clinched or the January national team camp if his health continues to improve.

  7. posthumously disciplined?

we’ll have to wait a while for that–can they engrave yellow cards on tombstones? 🙂

  8. Did you lot see the goal on which Twellman was hurt last season? He stuck his head through the LA keeper’s fist in order to score a goal, and came up bloody. Have you seen anyone currently on the national team lately willing to do that? Donovan, perhaps?

    Boca’s goal against Honduras.

Not taking anything away from Twellman, he is a great striker who will most likely be MLS’s all time leading scorer, but his time in the national team is over. If he scores 25+ goals this year, great for him, but there are younger players out there who deserve a chance. He never made an impact for the MNT, and if we have to devert back to Twellman, we can forget about qualifying for the World Cup.

  9. Because the USMNT is so deep and talented at the forward position that Twellman shouldn’t even be in the discussion.

By all means, please give me more Brian Ching and Conor Casey.

  10. I’ve like Taylor for awhile, but I’m still mad at his dive in the box in the DC United game, he should’ve been posthumously disciplined.

  11. not to take anything away from him but he scored against US the RBNY we suck and he needs to do this vs some good teams before i believe he’s back.

  12. He sure scores a lot of goals for someone not on the Nats’ radar at this time. Whatever happens USMNT-wise, he’s got nothing to be ashamed of.

  14. Half of the comments on here are grumbling and complaining. My goodness. Give the man his due. He came back from a major injury and has done very well. He may not be national team material, but can’t we just appreciate someone’s accomplishments every once in a while?

  15. The only way Taylor Fallman gets back into the national team picture is if he runs on the field right before the photographer presses the button.

And don’t worry Revulsion fans, he’s not going anywhere. He may do well in this league, but put him in any jersey without an MLS patch on the sleeve and he’ll disappear faster than a Geico Caveman sitcom.

  16. I think TT and Steve Ralston should start a MNT snub club because though neither should be on the team now- I think four years ago they both deserved more chances but never really got them. Simply not enough potential even though the production was always there- EJ benefits from the opposite.

  17. I always admired TT’s play and enthusiasm…he reminds me of a more expressive McBride. Having him playing for NE makes that team better.

  18. He definitely did not start, and the score was definitely only 1-0 when he came on.

Also, as for the “dive” against D.C., I agree that it was a very weak call. However, I don’t think it was a dive. He was leaning back into his man, while trying to control the ball. He got a little tug off balance and fell down. Bad call, not really a dive though.

To be honest, I am not sure I have ever really seen him take a blatent dive in the box. Like him or hate him, he is more like one of those players that gets chopped in the box but refuses to go down, so he misses out on the ball and the call. He just isn’t the diving type. I am sure all Twellman haters will disagree, but likely not with any evidence but thier own dislike for him as a player.

  19. Slugger, the score was actually 1-0 when TT came on at half, and the RedBulls had played fairly well until then. Just sayin’.

  21. RBNY fan here, and I grudgingly admire TT, lot. But this POY award is a sentimental vote — Twellman wasn’t even player of that game. At 2-0 the match was already decided when he came on, and he was going up against possibly the most atrocious team in MLS, and certainly the worst on the road.

Jay Heaps was MOTM for the Revs, his asist on the Revs second just killed NY, and you can also argue that Geoff Cameron, who was a rock defensively in the Dynamo’s shutout at Chicago, is more deserving .

And say what you want about Schelotto’s two goals (the second on a PK) but the 10-man Crew don’t win in KC without him.

    Just sayin…

  22. NE has to hope that TT gets fit enough to actually start games and then hope that he stays healthy the rest of the season. NE has no forward depth to speak of and has struggled mightily to score all season, relying almost entirely on the guile of two veteran midfielders playing out of position up top — Joseph and Ralston.

  23. Why not give him a shot again? Altidore has done nothing, Ching never moves the ball forward, and using Donovan and Dempsey at forward hurts our midfield. Taylor can hold the ball and take pressure off the other forward.

  24. no to the national team, but good job for the revs. National team wise i think i would still prefer EJ, Davies, and cooper to twellman, with of course altidore, ching, donovan, and dempsey above that.

  25. His comeback is highlighted by a magnificent dive in the box that stole 2 points from DC United.

He was last seen somewhere in the Caribbean on vacation with Cristiano Ronaldo and Blanco diving off cliffs.

It’s good he is back in the league, making the East deeper than before. A more competitive league is a much more exciting one.

I don’t see him back on the MNT. It’s time to move on and give other younger players a chance.

  26. TT’s performance the last 2 games has been awe-inspiring. You can really sense a huge difference by having him on the pitch. For a Revs fan, it was one of the most memorable games I have seen in the last 3 years.

  27. I am sure Twellman will continue to score goals if healthy, but his time with the USMNT has come and gone. He may earn a roster spot as a Gold Cup sub, but if we need to lean on him then we may want to consider the “forfeit and avoid embarassment” formation

  28. Twellman did not start, Ives. He came on at the start of the second half for Pat Phelan.

He’s my favorite sportsman ever. He’s come back from a terrifying (potentially career-ending) injury to lift the whole team up, and he had nothing but love for his teammates and the fans in the postgame interviews. I hope he never, ever leaves the Revs.
