  1. Mexico was given that goal. But the funniest thing is that Univision shows replays that show nothing happened or you can’t tell if something happened. Then they show replays of the Nica goalie giving the linesman and the ref the business. While the announcer says he is lucky that he did not get two yellows. They want the gift and they want the Nicas to go a man down. Harkes and JP are bad but these dudes are awful.

  2. “The Mexico team A, which I haven’t seen since the WC, is very, very skilled.”

Well, that is a pretty large gap of time to ignore when making such a definitive statement about Mexican superiority in CONCACAF.

The current “A” team is a shadow of past Mexican teams and is still relying on a 36 year old Blanco to bail them out. That said, they are still dangerous and it is going to be very tough for the Yanks to win at the Azteca next month.

Also, that penalty call was a joke. The guy tripped himself…

  3. Dude, Nicaragua? Seriously, My High School soccer team culd probably be able to string more than 5 passes, maybe even 10 against this mexico team, they are horrible

  4. Vivaquo, I don’t think we had one (maybe Charlie Davies) regular on our team against Grenada, which is just as good or better than Nicaragua, and we man handled Grenada. The only reason Mexico is up is a phantom penalty call. I think you should just face the fact that the third best team in the Americas is the United States.

  5. Grenada is a much better team than Nicaragua. Grenada defeated Cuba to get into the tournament.Nicaragua is probably the worst team in the tournament. There is not one player in the Nicaraguan side that plays professionally. After a hard days work, they get together and practice. Man, Mexico is pitiful.

  6. Vivaquo, Mexico is certainly certainly not the 3rd best team in America. You mentioned the Mexico A team…did the US send their A team to the Copa America? Your statements are nonsense and I believe you that you haven’t seen Mexico play since the last World Cup

  7. Champe….

‘…And I mean Mexico has never been good by international standards — they were long the 8000 lb CONCACAF gorilla…’

Stop smoking the arrogance rug! Until the next Copa America Mexico is still the third best team in America after Brazil and Argentina! And as a Brazilian/American who has seen Mexico beat Brazil over and over again, your statements are just nonsense!!!
This Mexico team is horrible, but only four of the players in the field are regulars, and the moment Vela got hurt it all went to hell! The Mexico team A, which I haven’t seen since the WC, is very, very skilled.
Having said that, I really hope Nicaragua can pull the upset!

  8. Mexico controlling possession, but absolutely zero threat. They are just boring. The future does not look bright south of the border.

  9. Sometimes after a bad penalty call like that the Ref will try to even it out, so Mexico better be very careful in thier box during the second half.

  10. Mikeal — fair points. They are both awful teams. And our kids looked better than theirs do.

This gamne is going to get really chippy in the second half.

  11. That was a bizarrely soft penalty. Particularly since the ref had been letting both sides kill one another in the midfield, including a sequence of 4 cleats up tackles earlier.

  12. I know not to put alot of stock in the FIFA rankings but according to the new rankings Grenada is 88 and Nicaragua is 135.

  13. Mexico got bailed out on a terrible penalty call. Champe, I don’t know if I agree with you about Nicaragua being better than Grenada. Grenada knocked out T & T (who was in the last world cup) and Guatemala in the preliminary rounds. I would say they are at least equal.

  14. Mexico up 1-0 on a dubious penalty. Looks like the dude whiffed and fell over his two feet. I could be wrong, but that’s sure what it looked like.

  15. And I mean Mexico has never been good by international standards — they were long the 8000 lb CONCACAF gorilla.

  16. Mexico has never been “good.” They have usually had a few stand out players, however. This young generation just hasn’t developed. I have to think it’s their national team structure and scouting — we are talking about a huge country that loves the game, there is no way they select their best players. Nicaragus is better than Grenada, and Mexico WILL win, but they look boring, unconfident, and disorganized.

  17. Nicaragua is not good and they are giving Mexico all they can handle. The US handeled Grenada easily and I would say that Grenada is just as good if not better than Nicaragua.

  18. With as much complaining as I sometimes do about the state of the US team and the politics of team selection, watching Mexico reminds me how much worse it would be to be a Mexican fan. With the amount of talent in that country it is ridiculous that they consistenly field teams full of such pedestrian players.

  19. Too bad Vela is so brittle. He’s the only one I really cared to watch with Castillo out and Dos Santos being the Mexican Adu.

  20. Puerto Rico is an American Commonwealth with non-voting representation in Congress. It’s completely different from colonial status, which was Guadaloupe’s status for centuries.

France fought much harder in the post WW II era to hold on to their colonies than any other former European world power. They fought and lost wars in Indochina and Algeria, and eventually granted full equality and French citizenship to most of the tiny outposts like Guadaloupe too small to fight for independence.

  21. quite a few players from France can trace their origins from the Caribbean (Thierry Henry) or Africa are very good and play at the highest level in Ligue 1(French league). but because of the depth of players avail in the pool for the national team, they have to resort to playing to tournament such as the Gold Cup.
UK players are doing it too BTW. But with the exception that their 2nd country can play in FIFA. Trinidad & Tobago and Jamaica have benefitted from that.

  22. Guadeloupe is considered an “overseas department”. that is the equivalent of a State of France. Unlike Puerto Rico which is considered a colony of the US.
anyway, because of their status, they are not allowed to join FIFA

  23. Can somebody explain to me the deal with Guadaloupe? Quick internet search shows me that they’re a part of France, but they’re not playing here as France but they also arent in the FIFA World rankings when i looked. So apparently they’re not a separate nation like with wales/england/scotland, but are they then basically an extension of France? Could France play some younger players with them for experience or something if they really wanted to?

  24. Guadaloupe has a nice style of play and they can be really good they just lack that final touch, they need to work on their dribbling and ball control, and shuld work on passing ability just a tad bit more they sure as hell are better then Panama, i would like to see them play Nicaragua and Mexico

  25. So difficult. Cheer for absolute Mexican failure or cheer for Mexico to reach the final against the U.S. What do I do?
