New Toronto FC signing Ali Gerba helped the Canadian national team kick off the Gold Cup with a 1-0 victory against Jamaica on Friday night in the tournament's first match.

Canada is joined atop Group A by El Salvador, which used a late goal from Osael Romero to knock off Costa Rica, 2-1, in the nightcap at Home Depot Center.

El Salvador faces Canada on Tuesday night at Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio with the winner guaranteed a place in the quarterfinals. Jamaica faces Costa Rica in the first match on Tuesday night, with the loser in real jeopardy of being eliminated.

Here are highlights from Friday's matches:

CANADA 1, JAMAICA 0

EL SALVADOR 2, COSTA RICA 1

Gold Cup action continues tonight with Group B action, as Haiti faces Honduras at Qwest Stadium at 7 p.m., followed by the U.S. national team's opening match of the tournament, against Grenada (9 p.m., Fox Soccer Channel).

What did you think of Friday night's action? Starting to believe that Canada could challenge for the title? Surprised to see Costa Rica knocked off? Will you be watching tonight's action or skipping it to see fireworks?

  1. That Gerba finish was pretty damn special. If he finishes half the chances Chad Barrett’s missed (about 30), TFC will be very hard to beat in the second half.

  2. Uh oh! Jermaine Pennant might be coming to CONCACAF?! Looks like Jamaica can look forward to a lot of promising runs down the right flank that end up in nothing. Take it from a Liverpool supporter, this guy is and always will be a giant letdown. One day he looks like a world class player (as he did against Milan in the 2007 CL Final) and the next he looks like a petulant Sunday leaguer (as he did most of the rest of the time at Liverpool).

Though that is interesting about Jamaica potentially benefiting from the new FIFA rule, anyone have a list of potential players they could bring in?

On this subject, are we going to see Findley go play for T&T and Alvarez play for El Salvador?

  4. Jamaica’s a country that will really benefit from FIFA’s rule change (the Jermaine Jones rule). There are a bunch of premiership players with Jamaican ancestry that were previously inelgible due to playing England U21’s and youth teams. Jermaine Pennant is one. If they’d made the Hex they could’ve gotten stacked really quickly.

As for Canada, they really should be better than they are. They’ve got players in the premiership, la liga, the bundesliga, eredivisie etc. Hutchinson was 2nd in player of the year voting in the danish league.
