USA Crest HondurasCrest

The U.S. men's national team will take on Honduras for the third time in less than two months tonight in the CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinals at Soldier Field in Chicago.

The Americans have beaten the 'Catrachos' in the previous two meetings, once in World Cup qualifying, and once in the Gold Cup Group Stage.

I will be providing commentary throughout the evening so please feel free to follow along here. As always, you are welcome to share your own thoughts and opinions on the match in the comments section below.

Enjoy the action.

FINAL– The U.S. national team will now take on the winner of tonight's Costa Rica/Mexico semifinal in the Gold Cup final on Sunday at Giants Stadium. Be sure to stay tuned to SBI for our coverage of the Gold Cup.

Feel free to share your post-game thoughts, as well as your own commentary on Costa Rica/Mexico, in the comments section below.

That's all for me. Thanks for following along tonight.

——————–

FINAL– A complete team performance from the Americans tonight. The attack wasn't always effective, but they kept creating chances and eventually broke down Honduras. The U.S. team will feel pretty confident heading into the final, regardless of who it meets.

——————–

FINAL– USA 2, Honduras 0. A quality performance from top to bottom. The defense was stellar and the attack created chances. Troy Perkins put his stamp on the game, enjoying his best performance of the tournament and Stuart Holden sets up both goals.

——————–

92nd minute– Wonderful sequence for the USA on that goal and nice finish by Cooper.

——————–

90th minute- GOAL USA!!!!!!!!!!!! Kenny Cooper!!!!!! A tap-in from Holden after Ching springs Holden with a back-heel. USA 2, Honduras 0.

——————–

89th minute– USA so close on another header. Marshall misses by inches.

——————–

88th minute– Cooper draws a foul, right side of the area. USA free kick.

——————–

87th minute– SAVE ESCOBAR. Great header saved.

——————–

86th minute– Cooper is on for Davy Arnaud.

——————–

85th minute– PERKINS SAVE!!!!!! Stops Costly, WOW, what a chance. Honduras corner.

——————–

81st minute– Mexican fans are rooting hard for Honduras here. You surprised?

——————–

80th minute– Roger Espinoza is in for Walter Martinez. About time (and nice haircut for Espinoza).

——————–

78th minute– Carlos Costly with a yellow card for diving. What a bad dive. Kudos to Chad Marshall for shutting Honduras' best player down for a second time.

——————–

77th minute– Holden should switch to the left side, with Quaranta at right mid.

——————–

77th minute– Santino Quaranta in for Rogers.

——————–

76th minute– Holden gets into the area but sends a cross high instead of low. Great chance wasted.

——————–

74th minute– Arnaud with a yellow card for obstructing a free kick. Walter Martinez with a clever bit of gamesmanship.

——————–

72nd minute– Holden draws a foul on the counter. Soft foul but USA will take it. The kick goes begging and here comes Honduras.

——————–

70th minute– The crowd is filling in nicely in Chicago. Looking more like a big crowd, with plenty of Mexican fans arriving now for Costa Rica-Mexico.

——————–

70th minute– Corner doesn't find anybody. Honduras draws a foul and it's a Honduras goal kick.

——————–

69th minute– USA free kick. Arnaud earns a free kick on the right edge of the area. Dangerous.

——————–

68th minute– USA corner. Another nice pass from Beckerman to spring Rogers on that sequence.

——————–

66th minute– Rogers dribbles into traffic yet again, a bad habit of his. Americans need some patience in possession.

Perkins does well to get off his line and get to that ball.

——————–

63rd minute– Medina and Rogers clash heads. Rogers is up, Medina isn't yet.

——————–

63rd minute– Wow, Ching just got stepped on pretty viciously. Ref missed that one.

——————–

61st minute– Pearce with another good intervention.

——————–

61st minute– Beckerman whistled for a foul. He and Pause are getting very close to second yellow territory.

——————–

59th minute– Perkins does well to get his hands on a dangerous Honduras cross. Honduras is starting to build momentum.

——————–

58th minute– Pause lucky not to get a second yellow. Honduras with a free kick from the left flank.

——————–

57th minute– The Honduran goalkeeper, Escobar, has been extra busy tonight, but many of the shots he's seen have been weak.

——————–

56th minute– The U.S. defense looks more vulnerable tonight than the last time these teams met.

Holden with a shot saved by Honduras.

——————–

55th minute– Nice intervention by Goodson. Great game so far for the former FC Dallas defender.

——————–

54th minute– Honduras showing some more patience in possession and finding space. Those cards to Pause and Beckerman might have them a bit too careful.

——————–

49th minute– MARSHALL with a soft shot on a clear look in front of goal, easy save for the Honduran keeper. Wasted chance there.

——————–

48th minute– Beckerman with a yellow card. Now both USA d-mids are carded.

——————–

47th minute– SAVE Honduras, a header from Holden isn't strong enough.

——————–

46th minute– We're back and Rogers looked to be taken down. NO PENALTY.

——————–

HALFTIME– Who else has played well? Heath Pearce has looked sharp today. In fact, the whole back-line has been strong. The only real issues were Arnaud and Rogers with a few turnovers (though his crossing showed more promise tonight.)

——————–

HALFTIME- How good was Holden's corner kick? Has there been a better corner from the USA this year? If the Americans could produce that kind of service even half the time, with players like Bocanegra, Onyewu, Marshall and Conrad, the U.S. team would be that much tougher.

——————–

HALFTIME– That goal should open things up a bit. No pressing needs for USA subs, though Cooper for Arnaud looks like a good bet. Honduras might want to consider Roger Espinoza in the second half.

——————–

HALFTIME– USA 1, Honduras 0.

Americans with the better chances and better possession. Holden needed to step up and did just that with a perfect corner on Goodson's goal.

The USA defense has rarely been troubled and Beckerman and Pause are doing well to stifle the Honduran midfield before it can even get going.

——————–

45th minute– Goodson beats Costly to a beautiful corner kick from Holden. Honduras pulls a Red Bulls and gives up the goal just before halftime.

——————–

45th minute- GOAL USA!!!!!!!!!! Clarence Goodson HEaDER!!!!!! USA 1, Honduras 0.

——————–

45th minute– Ching did well to get himself open, but needs to finish that (assuming it wasn't deflected, which it looked like it was.)

ROGERS SHOT saved. USA corner.

——————–

44th minute– Okay, so that save wasn't as tough as it looked at first.

CHING SHOT WIDE. It looked to be deflected but no corner for the USA.

——————–

43rd minute– SAVE HONDURAS!!!!!!!!! Holden's free kick is SAVED. USA corner.

——————–

42nd minute– Dangerous free kick for the USA courtesy of who else? Brian Ching.

——————–

41st minute– Holden looks like he's trying to force things. He knows the attack needs him to have a big game tonight.

——————–

40th minute– Davy Arnaud isn't looking sharp tonight. How early will we see Kenny Cooper tonight?

——————–

38th minute- Logan Pause with the first yellow of the match. He will need to be careful now.

——————–

37th minute– Aside from forcing some bad crosses early, Holden is looking more like the early tournament Holden now.

——————–

35th minute– Honduras with a dangerous counterattack but they can't turn it into a scoring chance.

——————–

34th minute– Americans are pressing, but need to be sharper in the final third. USA corner.

——————–

33rd minute– USA corner. Nice tackle by Beckerman.

——————–

32nd minute– A great sequence of passes from the USA, ended by a terrible cross.

——————–

32nd minute– Heaps does well to hold up the Honduran attack.

——————–

30th minute– Is it me or do the Honduras jerseys look like high school jerseys with the big H on the heart?

——————–

29th minute– Better from Holden there. Logan Pause with a good tackle to slow down Honduras.

——————–

27th minute– Beckerman looks good early, as does Marshall. The rest? It's still early-ish.

Drinking games? Rogers turnovers and bad Holden crosses. Also, Marshall tackles won. Yes, it's party time.

——————–

26th minute– Holden's not looking sharp at all tonight, which doesn't bode well for the USA.

——————–

25th minute– Rogers with another turnover. Can't remember the last time he beat someone off the dribble.

——————–

23rd minute– For those who don't know, Soldier Field charged $40 for parking tonight. What a joke.

——————–

22nd minute– Americans are wasting too much possession with terrible crosses.

——————–

21st minute– Honduras header goes wide. Americans giving up too much possession. Honduras looks sharp on the counter.

——————–

20th minute– SAVE PERKINS. Dangerous shot from Marvin Chavez. Honduras corner.

——————–

18th minute– Honduras with a nice sequence but Beckerman clears a cross to kill the momentum.

——————–

16th minute– Disappointing to see so many empty seats tonight but with this being the second Honduras-USA game at Soldier Field in less than two months, and with the rain falling, I can see why.

——————–

15th minute– Goodson SO CLOSE. His header is inches wide.

——————–

14th minute– Honduras nearly with a chance but they're offside.

——————–

13th minute– Honduras corner.

——————–

12th minute– Marshall with a nice tackle on Costly. He owned him in the first meeting. Doing it again won't be easy.

——————–

11th minute– Rogers is putting some good balls in. Beckerman is also very active early.

Nice intervention by Goodson.

——————–

9th minute– WOW, what a header. Nice cross by Rogers. Ching misses wide. Another missed opportunity.

——————–

8th minute– Beckerman dodges a rough challenge there. Honduras isn't going to hold back on the tackles tonight. Expect a physical game.

——————–

6th minute– No Roger Espinoza for Honduras tonight. Somewhat disappointing considering the tournament he's had.

——————–

4th minute- There's a steady rain falling in Chicago. Should be interesting to see how the impacts the match.

——————–

3rd minute– Honduras pressing but Beckerman helps slow them down.

——————–

2nd Minute– Heaps misses with a header off a Holden corner kick. Americans need to convert those chances.

——————–

1st Minute– We're underway.

——————–

PRE-GAME– Where will the attack come from for the Americans tonight? Holden

——————–

PRE-GAME– Goodson gets the start ahead of Parkhurst and Pearce stays put at right back.

——————–

PRE-GAME– Here is the USA starting lineup:

————-Ching———Arnaud—————

Rogers————————————Holden

————–Beckerman——Pause————

Pearce——Marshall———Goodson—-Heaps

———————–Perkins———————

Jimmy Conrad did not dress. Here is the USA bench:

Busch, Quaranta, Evans, Clark, Cronin, Cooper, Parkhurst

What do you think of the lineup.

Comments

  1. I’m kinda liking Cooper. I wish he’d play his size, but he plays like Adu in the forward spot except Coop has a nose for the goal. He plays like he’s 5’3″, keeping everything low and not trying to play in the air.

No WAY he goes to SA, though.

  2. The was a good game, I think they could have played a little better, but I still think if they play like that that can beat Mexico.

I do have to say that I thought Pause, and Rogers had a horrible game. Those two could not hold the ball to save their lives and their passes where terrible. It seemed every time they got the ball they would lose it right back. If we want to beat Mexico, we can not have that happen. I would put Cooper up top with Ching, move Arnaud to the left side, have Quarante out right and move Holden just behind the strikers, dropping Rogers and Pause.

  3. Oh, and Mexico better turn the ball over a LOT less or the US is going to throttle them. Both CRC and MEX were lousy in possession coming through middle third. A little high pressure by the US may give them fits.

  4. Pearce is redeeming his Nat. Team chances….he has been very good this tournament. Particularly because he has had to work alone over there because Rogers does almost nothing defensively. Still, Pearce has covered the back and also come forward to attempt some link up play.

The problem with Rogers is that he is stupid (in a soccer sense). He just doesn’t seem to know where to go or how to work with overlaps very well. And his first touch is atrocious. Maybe he’ll get better though because you can’t teach pure pace like he has.

Pause was strong again. He will occasionally give up the odd ball but so does Beckerman but the pair cover so well for each other, it usually isn’t a big deal.

  5. A few points about the game.

After Goodson and Marshall’s continued good play, I’ll say it again… The race between those two, Conrad and Califf for one center back spot is going to be great to watch.

As you know, I’m not one to be hard on US players, but I had had enough of both Pause and Ching… and then they both show me wrong. First, Ching fighting off two defenders and then the heel pass to Holden. That’s why he’s out there. Then Pause wins a ball on the left side of midfield (which scared the hell out of me) and he calmly takes two touches across and moves it wide to Holden.

THAT’S why I root for each and every one of these guys, and don’t get down on them.

Heaps looked good, I thought. Actually both he and Pearce were solid, if not good,

Oh, and Cooper is friggin’ huge! When he hugged Pearce after the goal, he engulfed him. I wish he had a true position. He almost refuses to play in the center of the field, and I think he’s too slow to play midfield. Maybe outside forward in a 4-3-3?

  6. Clarence Goodson’s goal tonight reminded me of when Oguchi Onyewu scored against Honduras as well to take the USA to the final. We may just be looking at the next round of American stalwarts. I actually like Cooper today. Much smarter play from him overall, If we’ve got a striker setting up chances(Ching) and a striker finishing them off(Cooper) then thats a tandem I wouldn’t mind seeing. I just never envisioned Ching as a striker playing off of a bigger one, it’s almost ironic. Either way, I see this as the lineup:

    —————-Ching—-Cooper————

    Rogers——————————-Holden

    ————Beckerman—-Pause————-

    Pearce——————————–Heaps

    ————-Marshall—-Goodson———–

    ——————–Perkins—————-

GODson was brilliant tonight as well as the rest of the USA defense. However, I think we should call in Ricardo Clark to help relieve pressure defensively. He cover’s so much ground and has obviously improved with the ball at his feet. It’s still not great, but, again, that’s why looking to transfer. Beckerman just has a lot of creativity that we’re only seeing in flashes because he isn’t getting a lot of the the opportunities. Other than that, I just want to beat Mexico. Rico Clark has been with every team that’s beaten Mexico within the past 2 years so why not bring in a “veteran”.

  7. I agree about Ochoa as well…maybe the only Mexican soccer player I’ve ever really liked. Though Dos Santos is a fantastic player.

    Reply
  8. Wow. The MEX-CRC match was a nail-biter. Now we have to see if we have it in us to beat Mexico twice in one month with two different teams.

    @ Scott A – I like Ochoa, too. I think he’s class.

  9. Surprised every CR player went to the shooter’s right. The first three all went low, and Ochoa finally went that way to deny the third. I’d love to see out guys trying out for 2014 beat what’s pretty close to their 2010 team.

  10. This is an optimal result for the U.S., regardless of who wins the penalty kicks. Both teams have to play an extra 30 minutes and won’t get to sleep for a few hours.

    Reply
  11. Ochoa great save. Both teams still have the energy to attack after 115 minutes. Game resembles US vs Italy except they both still have 11 on the field.

  12. I have a solution for the Mexican fan problem. We could give “Ambassador” David Beckham the job to attend Mexican MNT games in the U.S. and help calm the fans down. He could even go around the stadium and offer to shake hands with them.

  13. In keeping with the theme of classy Mexican fans, my Spanish is far from fluent, several Mexican fans in my Justin TV chatroom made extremely racist remarks about the CR goal scorer.

The CR fans are now (rightfully) calling them bigots and muy racista.

  14. Dos great cross, Vela near miss. this is not a B squad. In fact there may be 5 to 6 SA starters on the pitch for El Tri.

  15. what could Concacaf do about the fans? They won’t shut them out (Concacaf makes too much money for tickets and technically Mexico is not the home team anyhow).

  16. Great gaol by Costa Rica to tie it up in the 90th minute! What happened to the Mexican defence? They thought the game was over.
