Houston to host 2010 MLS All-Star Game

The city of Houston will play host to the 2010 MLS All-Star Game, MLS officials announced on Monday.

The 15th playing of the event will be held either at Robertson Stadium or Reliant Stadium next summer. The 2009 All-Star Game is being played on Wednesday night at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. The MLS All-Stars are facing Tim Howard and Everton.

No word yet on a site for the 2010 MLS Cup Final but the new stadiums in Philadelphia and New Jersey are expected to be candidates.

What do you think of Houston being host for the 2010 MLS All-Star Game? Who could you like to see the MLS All-Stars face? Disappointed the game won’t be at one of the soccer stadiums debuting in 2010?

  2. If cold weather locales are at a disadvantage when it comes to bidding for the MLS Cup in November (or so we were told when LA won out over Chicago last year *cough*Beckham*cough*), why is one of the hottest temp places in the US chosen for the All-Star game in the middle of summer? It should have gone to Seattle or one of the new stadiums.

  3. I was hoping that NY would get to host the all star game since it only makes sense with red bull arena opening up. Also, MLS has normally had all-star games at newly opened SSS. Anyway, Houston is a great soccer city and if it helps them get closer to building an actual stadium then I’m all for it.

  4. I’m actually quite pleased. It’s within driving distance, so I’ll finally get to go to one. If I’m not on my honeymoon, that is.

  5. Seeing as no Red Bulls will be in the all-star games for years to come, I can see why they wouldn’t have it at the new stadium.

  6. IT WILL BE IN RELIANT STADIUM PEOPLE! Roof over head with air conditioning going. I predict it will be in the top attendance for an All Star game. I am not happy it will be Club America or another Mexican team but maybe MLS gets a strong EPL or Spanish team. I hope so.

Everyone is wondering how Houston got this one but I am sure the Houston City Council told the MLS if we get an All Star game then we will approve the new stadium deal. Always follow the money trail.

  7. I think MLS has gotten it backwards. I live in west Tennessee, and its 95 F with 70% humidity in July and August, and Houston’s even hotter and more humid. Has anyone from MLS HQ in NY ever been to Houston during the summer? Why not have the All-Star game in Philly or Red Bull Arena, and MLS Cup in Houston? The game needs to be at Reliant with the roof closed and the AC on. The only halfway legit reason I can think of are scheduling conflicts with the Univ of Houston and the Texans. I still don’t see why MLS Cup couldn’t be scheduled at Reliant on a weekend that the Texans are playing an away game.

  8. Move the All-Star Game to the end of the season before players can transfer to Europe.

I just don’t want to see anybody from my team play. There is a risk of getting injured in this meaningless game with absolutely no upside.

  9. They need to hold the cup at both teams that make the finals homes. (agg. 1 home, 1 away). This isn’t the super bowl and sad that they can’t sell out their championship game.

I guarentee if last years game was held at both Columbus and NY, at least NY would have been a sell out. It looked really dumb having the game at the Home Depot Center last year and somewhat embarassing.

  10. MLS has to make sure its not held at the same time as CONCACAF Champions League play and that it must go ahead before the World Cup begins or after it ends. Otherwise, it will be totally ignored.

  11. I think a Mexican league All Star team would be ideal.

If that can’t work out, how about Sunderland? Stuart Holden (if he’s not in Europe at that point) against his former employers in his hometown. Sunderland’s owner Ellis Short is American, and his business is based in Texas, albeit Dallas.

  12. I love the idea of an MLS All star team vs. the MLS All star team. It would immediately make this location legitimate, and change the face of the All-Star game. The later is one thing needing to be done, if not now, soon.

  13. They’re playing the All-Star Game in a football stadium where soccer is an afterthought (Robertson) or a giant football stadium that we won’t be able to fill (Reliant)? Jenius move there.

  14. I figured Seattle would get it and Houston would have to wait until their stadium is complete before hosting an all-star game.

  15. how its gods name does NY NOT get both the all star game and the finals?

  16. It should have be awarded to Philly with the ’10 Cup put in Red Bull Arena. Why put it in a city that is going to have a sss in 2 or 3 years now? Why not wait untill the new Houston Stadium is built to put it in that city? That just makes no sense… They better not have a Mexican team as the opponent like Garber said they might. If MLS teams can beat Mexican Teams in the Superliga then an MLS ALL-STAR TEAM can definetly beat one. This will be a step backward for the the All-Star Game. Unless they have a Mexican League All-Star team as the opponent but then it wont be as buzzworthy of a game and true MLS fans will be pissed.
