Packed Bernabeu welcomes Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid

You know how you can tell when a player is truly a mega-star? When a stadium fills just to see his introductory press conference.

Cristiano Ronaldo was unveiled at the Bernabeu on Monday in front of a crowd of more than 60,000 fans (with some reports putting the figure as 80,000). Wearing the Real Madrid uniform, and the number nine shirt, Ronaldo went through the usual introductory fanfare, and even addressed the crowd in Spanish.

It is a scene that needs to be seen to be believed:

Impressed by the scene? What do you think of Cristiano Ronaldo joining Real Madrid? Do you see him leading Real Madrid to championships? Do you see the new ‘Galacticos’ struggling like the old ‘Galacticos’?

  4. He’s an amazing player, but he is hard to like with all diving and the arrogance. I enjoy watching Madrid, but I’m hoping they fail…

  6. A.C. MILAN OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

    7/7/2009 2:16:00 PM

AC Milan announces to have signed defender OGUCHI ONYEWU, from Standard Liege, at the end of his contract. The player, who played the American national team, is also in possession of the Belgian passport and signed a contract which expires on June 30 2012. This operation proves once again the excellent friendship between our club and Standard Liege, and in particular, with vice president Luciano D’Onofrio.

  7. News wires are reporting that Oguchi Onyewu has signed with AC Milan.

I’m more interested in THAT story than seeing this preening peacock soaking up the adoration of myopic madridistas.

  8. Nobody ever hates the player who sucks…

I hope they play beautiful soccer, with Kaka’s vision and Ronaldo’s speed, they will find plenty of gaps in defenses.

I just wish every other team besides Barca and Real Madrid the best of luck breaking the first two. It would be amazing for another team to win La Liga, but it won’t happen until I sign with either Barca or Real.

  9. No, they haven’t resigned Makalele, but if you watched Lass last year, you’d understand why. The dude was a-ma-zing for them. Made the La Liga Best XI in half a season.

  11. This much fuss over one player is bound to create a powderkeg.

Not having a vested interest in La Liga, I’d like to see them pull this off and play some beautiful football. At the very least the Real/Barca superclasicos should be amazing stuff.

  12. They are going to end up playing a 4-2-4 with the players they are signing.

Playing good defense is about more than having the right players it is about having the whole team play organized and compact and doing their best to disrupt play.

    Benzema

    Robben-Kaka-Ronaldo=absolutely no tracking

    –Lass—Gago– back

    Heinze/Marcelo Ramos=Heath Pearce of spain

    —-Pepe—Albiol–

  13. i don’t know. i think if you said, “okay, i’ll give you a team with kaka, ribery, raul, and benzema” every one of you would take it no questions asked. i think the only ego involved would be ronaldo’s, and he’s the exact same player as he was at man utd. i don’t think this team will have a problem jelling.

  14. I agree with Simms, who cares about Ronaldo, really now. 60k? They probably all went just to see if he’d get all emotional and cry.

Ronaldo is the one player that I absolutely HATE with a PASSION. I despise him. He’s such a diving bastard.

Plus, I’m a girl and I do NOT think he’s goodlooking either, not at all.

  15. My curiosity led me to click on that link, just to see exactly how ridiculous that scene was, with my own eyes. And I just threw up in my mouth. Serves me right.

Gooch, stay far FAR FAR away. We need you on an actual TEAM. Not an overpaid bunch of primadonnas more concerned with marketing and sponsorship $. Stay away from the dark side, or suffer the same fate as the galacticos before them you will.

  16. There is a difference between confidence and arrogance. I hope that this new version of the Galacticos fails, solely to keep that man’s giant ego in check

  17. i watched this live. i don’t understand spanish really, but the kid won a drawing or something out of all the people in the stadium. the mc lady asked him who his favorite player was, expecting him to say ronaldo, but i lol’d when he grimly said kaka. it wouldn’t surprise me if he just thought c-ron was a douchebag.

  18. I think the tens of thousands of pounds a week is probably cute enough for the chicks. And yeah, that kid did look horribly unenthused.

  21. Pretty impressive scene. I wonder if the chicks will dig that Portugese accent or if it’s not “cute” in Spain, kind of like a NASCAR accent in the states.

  22. Have anyone ever a movie where you have all big stars and the movie just fails to live up to the hype? Well, I hope RM doesn’t become that movie.

  24. I can’t stand him. His amazing talent is only matched by his ability to flop and pout. I wish failure upon him and any team that employs him.

  25. Radio Marca said it was likely pushing, if not over, 80k.

I just want to know how they plan to squeeze in 90 for when Gooch gets his shirt.
