While he may not boast the soccer resume of Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert is apparently a soccer fan now. You can thank the U.S. national team’s run through the Confederations Cup for making it happen.
Enjoy this clip of Colbert discussing the sport we love, with his own unique spin:

If you liked that, then you’ll also enjoy Colbert’s interview with Alexi Lalas:

Yep, tonytdc, gotta be able to laugh at yourself
as a former high school wrestler, i learned that if you can’t laugh at some jokes about the sport you love then you need to loosen up just a bit. it’s sport, that’s all.
and if us soccer can see the humor and laugh at itself a little, how about a campaign with t-shirts saying ‘soccer – just as action packed as baseball and no steroids or a-rod’.
We have to get Colbert to attend a game! USA/Mexico at Azteca!

And hopefully he can bring along Esteban Colberto.
@ Alex G, Donovan is out for the Mexico game, because of yellow cards accumulation. The one vs Honduras and Brazil.
Gotta love the Colbert bump.
Colbert was funny, but he also probably made a fool of himself with the clip unless he was in on the joke:

Colbert gets it. My opinion he is a fan. That is his shtick. In reality if he says something about it is making news. That was good for USSoccer.
I loved the, “oh, God, I know how lame this is,” look Lalas gives when he says “Grenada…Honduras…Haiti…”
Probably shouldn’t have dwelled on that if he wanted to recruit fans to the game 😀
Yes, and baseball is full of action. At any given moment, 8 fielders are standing still, scratching their nuts, the pitcher is taking 30 seconds to rest between pitches and the batting team is sitting down in the dugout chewing on sunflower seed and spitting tobacco. Thats ACTION!!
American Football has about 10minutes or less of action game time, the rest is hudles, and other baloney.
Ha I saw this last night, so funny the play where he falls asleep is ironic because ARgentina scored wish he showed that
Funny segments. And yeah, I was expecting Lalas to be all super-excited to hear his own voice, but he came across well
Colbert should record himself going to the mexico game and play it on his show
Outstanding! i am a soccer fanatic, and I thought both Colbert pieces were phenomenal – we have to be able to laugh at ourselves once in a while.
As for the pillow episode. I wonder how hard it would be to find several minutes of a baseball game where nothing is happening. Oh yeah, that’s practically the whole game.
LMAO that was awesome.
Hilarious. Thanks Colbert!
Let’s keep the ball rollin… this is good for the sport and I love it!!!, hey is Donovan playing against Mexico???
His joking about it sounded more snide, to me, than anything. I like Stephen Colbert, but his commentary on our game sounded too much like Collin Cowterd to me.
Colbert went to Porter-Gaud which in my day had great soccer teams as did their main rival Bishop England….granted he graduated from high school 10 years before me, but that may have something to do with it.
unrelated: by Ives, any insight as to why Khano Smith is still a red bulls?
This isn’t a new development. Colbert was on the US Soccer bandwagon a long time ago. He did a short segment on the US at the World Cup back in ’06. I remember Colbert saying, “Hey Ghana! You ain’t Ghana win!”
I’ve had the same problems explaining the Gold Cup to people who are suddenly interested in the USMNT after the Confed Cup…they give me that same bewildered expression after I mentioned Greneda and Haiti…
I’m surprised nobody mentioned the Haiti joke. Poor taste, sure, but funny as hell! Plus it’s always great when a joke makes the comedian crack up.
Bandwagon is large enough. Jump in, don’t be shy, have a scarf.
Lol, the transitive property of defeat.
Steven Colbert is a soccer fan in disguise.
THe brazilians have to get past the keeper out of the womb was hilarious
We kicked their ass in 1983 lol I love colbert, I watch the replays in the morning. This is great and he gave us the COLBERT BUMP!! It always works! USA USA USA USA. WE ARE GOING TO WIN THE WORLD CUP!!!!
This is what the USSF needs, and as the sport grows, it will help out our leagues the MLS, USL, and could even help the womens side. As a former player to the college level and now as a youth coach, I am excited to see the sport grow. The number one thing I would love to see happen in our sport is to see the MLS attendance rise to numbers we have never seen, where every team is averaging around 18,000-20,000 fans a game. The one way that could happen is to see the USA make it to the Semi-Finals of the World Cup. Lets GO USA!!!
Colbert shits all over Jim Rome.
Great stuff. Colbert is great at making fun of the stuff we make fun of.
smorebs – Lalas is definately staging a comeback.
Lalas does real well in these interviews with Colbert. that interview was amusing!
I know I walked away with the eye of a lady from Trinidad who had been talking smack before the game…
I’m getting more respect for Lalas after reading the excerpt from the Beckham book yesterday and going on colbert to pitch the game.
“WE WILL WIN THE WORLD CUP! WOOOOOOO!”
THanks Ed, I did find that. The Lalas interview is after the jump.
i love colbert
We have to get Colbert to attend a game! USA/Mexico at Azteca!
You should post the Lalas interview as well, that was surprisingly pretty funny.
it just proves that the better we do the more ppl will take notice in this country.
Seth Myers from SNL was twittering the whole Brazil match as well. Love it.
