Tevez set to join Manchester City

Carlos Tevez (Getty Images)

Carlos Tevez is already accustomed to wearing light blue while on national team duty with Argentina. It appears he is ready to wear the color full-time as he is on the verge of signing with Manchester City.

The former Manchester United striker is set to join United's cross-town rival in a deal sure to anger United fans who grew to love the mercurial striker. Tevez's public claims that Sir Alex Ferguson lied to him as the reason for him not re-signing with the EPL champions will only add more fuel to a derby that has enough intensity on its own.

What do you think of Tevez signing with Manchester City? Do you see the additions of Tevez, Roque Santa Cruz and Gareth Barry being enough to push City into the top four? Do you think Michael Owen will be able to pick up the slack left by Tevez's departure?

  3. If City can add a couple more quality defenders in addition to Tevez, there’s no reason they can’t challenge the top 4. With Tevez, RSC, Barry, and maybe Eto, they will be able to change their shape away from home which is where they had problems last year. Arsenal don’t appear to be improving the squad much, Liverpool might not have the depth, Chelsea’s fortunes depend on a new non-English speaking manager (Scolari all over again?), and United just lost two world-class strikers and have some aging players left mixed with unproven kids. So City might not challenge for the title, but it’s very possible, maybe even likely that at least one of the “big 4” will stumble and let City in. They need to stop letting in goals though – if they can upgrade at the back, look out!

  4. City’s away form last year was in the relegation places with only 11 points won on the road. They had two wins and five away draws from 19 matches. And in the matches that Shay Given played in (including the UEFA Cup) they were all of 9 wins 2 draws and 10 losses. IN fact, City had the least amount of draws in the Prem last year. So, unless they get a great holding mid fielder or Micah Richards steps it up, or they go out and buy Jolean Lescott in central defense, they are going to be hard pressed to finish better than they did last year. Shay Given is NO longer world class, and he suffered many injuries over the last three years at Newcastle. he does know from a bad back line. PLus, Sparky is going to get fired within the first two months of the season and then where does that lead them?

Although, not playing in Europe will come in handy when the death march of matches really takes hold come Feb and March. I’m going 7th. I would want Tevez in my squad, but when you play United you have to worry about a lot of players, and when you play City you only have to worry about 2-3.

  5. Man City could sign every striker on the planet and none of those signings will be as important to the team as getting Shay Given was. An entire season with him between the posts will make a huge difference. They need a backline in front of him that will take the load off if they want to contend. They have plenty of offense. Defense is what Man City needs to become and top 4 contender.

  6. PS: He’s not even that good. Yeah, he runs all day, but he has little creativity and is just an ordinary striker outside of that.

The english are critising people for their “creativity” now… i’ve seen it all.

  9. Farewell Carlitos!

I love Tevez’ on-pitch commitment and energy, and he will be a great asset to a club where he is happy and getting more playing time.

That said, at the very least he has had a hand in all the problems he has caused in the EPL. He’s a trouble maker, even if he mostly doesn’t get his hands dirty.

If Tevez were better he would have started at Man Utd. He’s a great player, but the competition for a starting spot up top is ultra fierce at that club.

None of the Man Utd players were finishing well enough last year. Carlitos could have secured a star role if he has shown more game than the others in that aspect.

Effort and a few goals here and there is nice, but not enough when you are trying to be the featured attacker at the top club in the world.

  10. Yeah, a wanker that’s accomplished more than any coach ever has and ever will. He obviously isn’t everyone’s favorite person, but no one can say he doesn’t know what he’s doing. Even Wenger knows what’s up. Also, I am a Man U fan, and I’m not insulted at all that I call them that. That’s what I’ve always called them, and it’s easy to type, and while I am aware they are usually referred to something else (Man Utd, United, Red Devils, whatever, or ManUre by the vast amount of jealous fans), I don’t give a crap whether or not you think we’re not real fans because we don’t call them by the right nickname. If you do care, you should probably get a life…

  12. I am very surprised at what Tevez said about scoring against Man U and then shouting in SAF’s face, and I sincerely hope that was fabricated. That fact of the matter is, Tevez is a good striker, but he has plenty of chances to prove his worth when Berbatov and Rooney were injured, and he still scored only 5 goals in the EPL. He is certainly not worth this much trouble. I realize Berbatov only had 9 goals and a player like him should have much more, but he also had the 2nd most assists in the entire EPL. He clearly contributed to the team. I expect him to have a much better second season with Man U. As for Man City, no way in hell does Barry, Tevez and Santa Cruz make them a top four team, that is a joke if I ever heard one. How are they going to fit Tevez, Santa Cruz, Wright Philips, Barry, Ireland, Robinho, Bellamy, De Jong, Kompany and Petrov into 6 striker and midfield spots? And that doesn’t count the other forwards like Benjani and Bojinov, and assuming they don’t sign anyone else? I know Eto’o is a target, but it looks like he’d rather play for Man U instead if he left Barca…

  13. Good thing is Tevez doesn’t have to sell his home or adapt to a new town/country/league; he simply drives across town to a new office. Bad thing is he might be forced to sell his home to protect himself fom the crazies!

I love Tevez. He’s not just all hustle and no game. He rentless nature creates his chances & chances for others. He’s far from an elegant footballer but he is one that can change a game. Perfect for the Premier League and City. SAF undervalued Tevez & I think it will come back and bite him in the ass.

  14. As a Man U fan I’m sad to see Tevez go… but I also find it funny that he’s calling SAF a liar when he’s lying himself. All of his statements have been “I want to play/start” etc, etc, etc. So, how often is he going to start while playing for a Man City squad that has Santa Cruz, Robinho, Bellamy and possibly Eto’o ? Let’s be honest, Carlos – it’s all about the money for you and your “advisor.”

  15. I’m a Man U fan and agree with Tevez 100%. I watched every game this season, he didn’t play nearly as often as last year. Berba took a lot of his time and Berba BLOWS. I hope he does score against Utd. (But I hope Utd. wins). How you bench Tevez after the way he and Rooney hooked up the year before is beyond me.

  16. Tevez WAS sh1t. It doesn’t matter what games he played in. He had more than enough chances to prove he was better than Berbatov. He isn’t and thats saying something cause Berba wasn’t good last year, imo. He played a ton of minutes, contributed nothing but running around and is now complaining about everyone and everything, especially Sir Alex. Its quite clear that this anger was manufactured by Joorabchian and Tevez. It looks like little Carlitos wants to get paid; just another city mercenary.

I never thought I would see the day when Ronaldo would fly in to Manchester to have dinner with Ferguson to thank him for helping to develop him, while Tevez would make up lies about everyone and everything on his way to City. Who would have thought that Ronaldo would have more class than Tevez.

  17. All but a very small handful of the top teams in the world would start Tevez and Robinho. There is nothing bad about this for Man City or anyone else. It is a good thing for football when talent like Tevez does not sit on the bench collecting dust because one of the traditional powers wants to collect players.

  18. City’s offense was never the problem and the depth will help, but the back line will hemorrhage goals at inopportune times.

Still, Barry and De Jong should forge a very formidable central midfield pairing.

  19. Who cares Ronaldo is right this year will be about La Liga, I don’t care how much money Man City have winning is an attitude and they just spent a lot of Money on guys who have proven that they can win, what? I predict 7 place.

  20. Love the way he plays but all these players want, money, love and playing time and usually in that order.

Imagine Bill Parcells as a big 4 club manager? That would be interesting dealing with all the crap and have players coming from 10 plus difrent cultures.

    It would be interesting.

The guys who played 30 years ago or before most just shake their heads but I guess that is true for all sports. ( Tiger Woods just complained that i was typing during his back swing and I am not at the tournement)

  21. i think owen is the kind of player that will benefit greatly from those around him… he is not a robinho type that will shine w/ a midlevel team (or a relegation level team for that matter..).. thus, when the guy got pt at madrid, he scored – he’s always done well for england too for the most part… baring injury (big risk), i think he’ll do every bit as good as tevez coulda done had tevez stayed a red devil

  22. i wish tevez the best of luck at man city, however he needs to keep his mouth shut for the time being. if he ends up scoring only 9 goals for the sky blues he will be a first-class wanker. and as a newcastle fan i hope man u can keep liverpool off the title platform for another year but i fear they made a horrible mistake with owen.. cheers

  23. Try to show up Sir Alex there Carlito and watch Vidic break your leg. Seriously, talk about losing the respect of all the supporters. Carlito may have the last laugh but somehow I think he will be playing meaningless football by February while UTD is still playing for the league and for cup trophies.

  25. Tevez has lost any good faith he had with Man U supporters with all this whining. It is now apparent that he is just another prima donna footballer and if he was as devoted to Man Utd as he claims, he would’ve had the good sense to realize there was no way he merited the highest salary on the team. I think he will be shocked when he is booed mercilessly at Old Trafford for turning out to be another megalomaniac overgrown baby who plays football for a living.

PS: He’s not even that good. Yeah, he runs all day, but he has little creativity and is just an ordinary striker outside of that.

  27. he seemed under-appreciated and under-used by Sir Alex. i think his biggest asset may be his dogged defensive pressure.

  28. TimF, I’m not going to totally disagree with you, but the vast majority of Tevez’s playing time this past season took place in meaningless games (i.e. various cup matches alongside youth players against lower division clubs) and/or garbage time, and he didn’t have a single bad performance.

If you don’t understand the different meaning league and European matches have from the meaningless ones, you have bigger problems than thinking the tireless Carlos Tevez was “sh1t.” Seek help.

  29. I have a very good understanding of the Tevez contract issue, and didn’t blame him or Manchester United in the least for how it ended.

Now that Tevez is making up random lies and constantly ranting about it to anyone who will listen, I am kind of sick of him.

Sorry they didn’t want to pay out 32 million pounds just to be able to sign you to their team jagoff. It could have ended with both sides regretting the split, and yet both sides understanding it just wasn’t feasible, but instead this guy has to turn around and tell anyone who will listen about his made-up betrayal or whatever. Honestly if he doesn’t shut up, he’ll lose the fans more quickly than he thinks.

  30. Will Man City challenge the top four?

I don’t think they’re top four but they should challenge for 5 and 6. I don’t see Aston Villa being as strong as last season – they really faded at the end. Everton did really well considering the state of their forward position. We’ll see if they can keep their D in tact and add more up top. Hard to put a finger on Fulham. Was last season a fluke? Will they be able to keep it up while playing in Europe? The only team from above I pick at this point to have a chance to finish as high would be Everton. Moyes is a magician. City and Spurs should be the main challengers for 5th spot. Spurs came on strong after the dreadful start. The question for City is a matter of will this group perform as a team – can Hughes put the pieces together. I think it’s just a matter of time before they do gel. Will it be this season or next is the only question in my mind. They have the quality.

  31. timf,
have to disagree, and i think the 60 or 70,000 that were at old trafford disagreed with you when he scored his last goal. He’s talking now because hes NOT going back there, so why would he care about the man u fans?
You’re also wrong because in PL alone, teves played about 1800 minutes, rooney 2200, and berbatov 2500. he played 700 less minutes than berbatov. FYI, 700/90 is more than 7 games. Also, tevenz had 9 DNP’s, and berbatov had 7, two of them to end the season. Rooney had 7, but he was injured for a bit. Look up some numbers before you talk smack
This entire situation from the start was rife with problems, starting with who actually owned him. It’s a shame, I’m not a utd supporter but I think he loved it there and they loved him, but business is business. He’ll do well at city, they’re slowly but surely getting the pieces they need for now.

  33. Tevez was sh1t last year. He played just as much as Berbatov and Rooney. Now he is going on and on, railing against Berbatov and then Sir Alex. He really has turned most of the Man Utd fans against him by talking crap instead of just keeping his mouth shut.
