Altidore scores in Carling Cup on good day for Americans

Jozy Altidore's transition into English soccer is going as well as anybody could have hoped as the U.S. national team striker scored his first goal for Hull City in a 3-1 victory against Southend in Carling Cup play on Tuesday.

Altidore scored a 42nd-minute goal on a 30-yard strike to push Hull City into the third round of the Carling Cup. The goal came in Altidore's second match for the Tigers.

The goal came just three days after he assisted on the game-winning goal in Hull City's 1-0 EPL win vs. Bolton on Saturday.

He wasn't the only American to contribute in a Carling Cup victory. Mike Grella assisted on a goal in Leeds' 2-1 overtime victory against Watford. U.S. national team defender Jay DeMerit did not play for Watford.

Here is how the rest of the Americans playing in Carling Cup did today:

Jonathan Spector started and played 90 minutes in a 3-1 West Ham victory against arch-rival Millwall in a match marred by fan violence.

Marcus Hahnemann started and played 120 minutes in Wolverhampton Wanderers penalty shootout win vs. Swindon Town.

Frank Simek started and played 90 minutes in Sheffield Wednesday's 2-0 loss to Port Vale.

What did you think of today's Carling Cup accomplishments for the American contingent? Excited to see Altidore on such good form? Happy to see Frank Simek return to action? Like seeing Hahnemann getting a chance to play for Wolves? Ready to start the "Call Up Grella" drive?

  1. Josy scored the second goal for Hull, which turned out to be the game winner. His assist at the weekend was for the only goal of the game. He continues to show an innate ability to score the big goal, both for club and country. That is something that can’t be taught. What a future!

  3. Aristotle,

I agree that we should be cautiously optimistic and not overreact to a goal against a League 1 side, but you’re going too far the other way in comparing Joz to some of the guys on your list. It seems to be a given that Jozy is going to be a starter or at least a significant contributor for a team in a top league – that’s pretty damn exciting, while these guys:

Jovan Kirovski – come on, now. I never understood the hype for this guy. Everyone with any sense knew he was rubbish the first time we saw him. He never broke into the rotation for any top league team or for the USMNT. Something Jozy has ALREADY done at 19.

John O’Brien was a tremendous player – deserving of all the hype before the injuries (and seemingly losing his nerve)

Clint Mathis never had the athleticism and never played in a good league

Freddy Adu never played in a top league

Lee Nguyen – please! Really? Lee Nguyen? Now you’re just being ridiculous. I’m sorry, did I miss the $10M transfer fee for Lee Nguyen?

Damarcus Beasley was perhaps the most successful club field player in US history, playing a starting role for a team going deep in the Champions League, something no other US player has ever done. I know it’s fashionable to bash him now that his wheels and confidence are gone, but the guy was tremendous in his day. He was a pure speed guy, and pure speed guys typically burn out faster than other players (see Michael Owen). Jozy isn’t nearly as reliant on speed. He’s a strong, bullish player who also has a solid long-range shot, excellent turn moves, and can run at players. His skillset is much more varied than DMB’s

Santino Quaranta: Really? Santino? Really? Never a regular for USMNT, never played in Europe. What, exactly are you basing this comparison on?

Eddie Johnson: Let’s not start this crap again, please. I’ve successfully refuted 8,172 idiots trying to make this comparison. I thought you were better than this, Ari. You’re really going to compare Eddie Johnson’s skillset to Jozy Altidore’s? Come on, now. You must have written this list without thinking.

  4. Fan violence between West Ham and Millwall?? You don’t say!!!
Haven’t I seen this movie before? The real question is, did Elijah Wood get knocked on his a$$, or did he hold his own in the battle?

Don’t be such a party pooper!! Fans want and need something to be excited about. Please don’t ruin the fun. We want to enjoy it while it lasts!!!!! Just because others have fizzled doesn’t mean Jozy will. And if he does then we’ll get excited about someone else. What’s the point of watching if we can’t dream a little.

  6. krolposki, I believe it is the teams in the top 4 divisions of English football, as opposed to the FA cup where over 700 clubs participate in

I will defend Casey. He scored a hat trick game before last against Chivas.

  8. Why is it impossible to find good highlights of these games? I’ve got the Jozy jersey and poster above my bed…now I want to see him score goals!

  9. Its good to see Simek healthy again. He’s been out too long to be a contender for the 2010 World Cup team, but he should get a chance in the next cycle.

  10. **””This is from a Hull City fan forum (hull cityonline.com) report on the match. “Altidore and Fagan lead the line from the off and despite our superiority, they struggled to find any support and didn’t get into the game. Altidore was very quiet until he scored. He lashed in a free-kick from 25 yards into the bottom right hand corner. He wasn’t involved a great deal in the game but when he was involved, he held the ball up well, looked strong and passed well. His first touch wasn’t always as good as it should’ve been. He should’ve won a penalty before the Southend goal when he was barged over in the box. The ref ludicrously pointed to the ball, which the defender came away with after he’d knocked Altidore over and then stepped over him to take the ball.” credit rick skelton.””**

That sounds like Jozy. Even back in his NYRB days. He gets the goals, and that is what is important. Jozy can finish inside the box akin to Inzaghi. He has power, but his strength is finishing off a 1-2 pass. ********Jozy needs a partner up front*********, and I hope Phil Brown knows that. Bob Bradley forgets sometimes, but you can see how much better he was with Davies next to him.

I’m hoping to see more from Jozy. He has all the tools necessary to succeed, and I wish we wouldn’t preassure him so much! He’s still young! He has a lot to look forward to, and if he fails at first we can’t get down on him. While he may be the future, there is no rush. He will mature.

    GO JOZY!

  12. Yeah! Jozy is going to rule the world! Yeah! Whoo hoo! In your face! Jozy is going to score 1000 goals this year! Yeah, baby!

We’ve done this before so many times with players. Judging by what’s happened in the past, I would say we are putting a hex on him. Let’s be cautiously optimistic, for his sake. It’s nowhere near as much fun, but maybe we won’t jinx him.

    Jovan Kirovski Whoo hoo!
    John O’Brien Yeah, baby!
    Clint Mathis He da man!
Freddy Adu He’s the future y’all!
Lee Nguyen The next John O’Brien!
    Damarcus Beasley
    Santino Quaranta
    Eddie Johnson

I’m sure some of you can think of more guys that were going to be so great but just never made it.

  14. So has anybody else read about Hull trying to sign another striker? Is this going to cut into Altidore’s time?

I think they’re still looking for another striker to pair with Jozy up top, Ghilas looks fantastic but I think they’re looking at him as more of a winger than a pure striker. Jozy should get lots of playing time either way.

  15. I guess you can’t get too excited about Joz scoring against a League 1 side, but it’s awesome for him to get off to a good start, regardless of the competition. The more he flashes, the morre PT he gets.
