Arsenal interested in Subotic

Neven Subotic 1 (Reuters)

Arsenal is in the market for a center back and the club has set its sights on Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic.

Subotic is reportedly being pursued by the Gunners, who sold center back Kolo Toure to Manchester City last week. Subotic, 20, is coming off an impressive first season in the German Bundesliga, scoring six goals in 33 league games to help Dortmund to a sixth place finish.

The Serbian international, who recently signed a new five-year deal with Dortmund, is also allegedly receiving interest from Manchester City and Chelsea.

What do you think of Subotic possibly joining Arsenal? Happy that he is receiving interest from big EPL club? Enfuriated? Still thinking about what could have been with a CB tandem of Onyewu-Subotic?

  1. I agree with Aaron. Let’s find more information about all the AMERICAN’s playing overseas.

    As for thoughts regarding Subotic.
    1. was he good enough to make the team at the time, or did you US soccer not recognize his potential?
    2. Did the US blow it in the manner in which machine gooner funk describes?
    3. I don’t think US soccer should kotow to prima donnas even if they have the potential to be the next —-.

  2. Congrats to him, and good luck, if he goes. I think he deserves it, and will grow as a player under Wenger.

Honestly, I wish Michael Bradley could follow him to Arsenal, as another good young player with the potential to be great.

Still, I won’t cheer for Subotic, though that has more to do with my being a Man United fan than his choice to play for Serbia.

  3. well i definitely do care. WE had this kid in our system. WE saw his potential. WE let an egotistical tyrant of a u-17, u-20 coach offend him and drop him from the u-20 team before a big big tournament and the insult stung him and soured him on the USMNT, you cant fault the KID (lets remember he’s young, immature and subject to hold grudges over things like this given his immaturity) if he felt slighted or unwanted most of you hypocrites probably would have done the same. as a gooner i’m down with this b/c we need the cover and he fits arsene’s youth system policy and in the games i saw him play he showed very good cover/recovery skills, he’s dangerous on set pieces b/c he’s good in the air/ also makes him valuable at winning balls in teh air on d. he needs work with his handling and passing 2 things that are essential if you’re going to play for the arsenal

  6. The Subotic anger should be directed at Rongen and the US soccer system as a whole. Traditionally, US Soccer has not been good at relating to soccer talent that is from a different country or culture and happens to be in or available to the US.

Castillo is another example … and unfortunately, I think Torres will be the next casualty (I hope I’m wrong!).

I wouldn’t be surprise if Jermaine Jones doesn’t work out (again, I hope I’m wrong!). He’s not from the US Soccer system and with our track record, we probably wouldn’t know what to do with him or appreciate what he brings to the table.

Earnie Stewart is probably the last guy that was not from the US soccer system to be successful with the US Nats.

The current US youth teams have a lot of diverse players. Lets hope the US has gotten better at relating to them and that they can be contributors to future senior teams.

  7. Listen folks, GianFranco posted this but I put him on the trail of this story after being tipped off to it earlier in the day as I was traveling back to the USA from my vacation. So yes, this post was my idea.

People who truly “don’t care” about Subotic won’t bother to comment. I think it’s pretty clear that most of the folks who commented here actually do care quite a bit, but they care more that Subotic turned his back on the USA, than on his Arsenal move. The fact that it got this much feedback tells me the story was newsworthy and something worth having on SBI.

If you don’t care for a story on SBI then I suggest skipping it and finding a story you do care for. Not every story is everybody’s cup of tea, so the complaining about “stories I don’t care about” is a bit misguided.

We cover American soccer, but also inform readers about the world game, be it South America, Europe or elsewhere. In my opinion a good soccer fan is a well-rounded fan and I try helping inform and educate readers about more than just MLS and the national team.

  8. john,
I can tell you from someone that got a 3am fcebook message telling me that “big things about to happen” the night before the villareal deal, that it probably DOES mean something. That’s the beauty of twitter and facebook, it’s media to some, and nothing to others.

  9. Subotic doesn’t anger me like Rossi does for some reason. Probably because we had the chance and Rongen blew it. But wasn’t he barely a citizen anyway? Rossi was born here and grew up here. That bothers me a lot more. Good job Thomas. Its nice to have youth coaches who can spot talent.

  10. The heritage thing get overplayed in the USA. My teammates give me crap for not supporting Mexico because my parents are Mexican. I have a teammate that has not lived one day in Mexico and he always talks about how “we are going to kick your ass.” What a fool.

I was born and raised in the USA and this is my country. When I go down to Mexico they see me as a gringo anyway.

The multi-culturalism gets pushed a bit too much in school. Why is everybody everything but an American? This is a pretty good country to live in.

learn anything about balkan politics and you’ll know that subotic didn’t turn on his first country, bosnia. bosnia is a country only in name, nobody identifies as bosnian in that country – only as serbian, croatian or muslim. the only people who suit up for bosnia are bosnian muslims unfortunately. luka modric and vedran corluka are bosnian croats who play for croatia and likewise there are many serbs who have done the same. get your facts straight before you spew unfiltered garbage.

subotic, rossi, none of them are traitors. im as hardcore a USMNT supporter as it gets, but coming from a split heritage you can’t criticize these players. you play for the country you are most connected with. i’m as die-hard as any, but it would be difficult for me to choose between the us and my parents country. you love both, stop being ignorant.

Well said. Well done! The boy made a rational decision based upon his birth place and opportunities. That’s a great (and in some people’s minds a very American mentality) thing.

  12. Just to be MORE clear if I wasn’t earlier:

GianFranco Panizo at 01:14 PM authored this post, NOT Ives.

I don’t know how many times I’ve seen people on here call out Ives when it WASN’T him lol.

Hey y’all, check the bylines (a byline tells you who wrote the story before or after the story is posted) before you start wigging out. This ain’t Ives’ post. It’s his website yes, so maybe he bears some responsibility but chillax on Ives otherwise!

  16. He is a stud, and I want to cry thinking of him throwing his US jersey in the trash bin. Although I don’t think he would change the MNT, he is 20 years old, and will be a world-class defender by Brasil 2014.

  17. Those of you who think this isn’t an American story need to do a little more digging before you start typing. (I’m talking to you KCB, chris, CapeCodFutbol, etc.)

Subotic not only played for the US youth sides (U17 and U20), he also attended the US academy in Bradenton, Florida. So to some Americans, he seems like a traitor, who used the US youth system for his own advantage. (I would argue, this is quite unlike Rossi, who used the Parma youth system.)

But the recent FIFA rules changes make this narrative less interesting. If players like James and Castillo play for the US, and players like Alvarez leave, after playing for the senior squads, then I’m less interested in what former youth players do.

All I take away from this story is that a kid who matured within US Soccer *might* play on a big-four side in a position other than goalkeeper.

  18. I feel the same way with DMAN.

I’m glad that Arsenal is looking at him and Subotic is doing well and I wish him the best as a person But Lets no talk about him anymore he is not in the USNMT any more so who care. Let’s talk about our American kids who do enjoy been an American and would like to wear those colors with pride. So Please IVES stop all this about Subotic Articles who cares anymore.

  20. Nothing wrong with Subotic choosing Serbia. It’s where he was born. It’s not like he was born in New Jersey and raised in New Jersey and decided to play for “his father’s country” or anything like that. So he picked Serbia. Enough with the sour grapes. He can’t be seen as a Judas like Rossi or Castillo. Those guys deserve hate, not Subotic.

HAving said all that… screw Arsenal.

  21. Arsenal should buy Demerit, he’d be cheaper anyway. Plus, he’s already performed well in the PL. (Obviously won’t happen, but still.)
