El Salvador national team manager Carlos De Los Cobos has named a 22-man squad for his team's World Cup qualifier against the United States on Sept. 5 in Sandy, Utah.
Eliseo Quintanilla and Alfredo Pacheco lead a squad looking to rebound from a World Cup qualifying loss to Trinidad & Tobago earlier this month.
Here is the squad:
GOALKEEPERS– Miguel Montes and Dagoberto Portillo
DEFENDERS– Alex Escobar, Ramon Flores, Marvin Gonzalez, Mordecai HenrÃquez, Luis Miguel Hernandez, Alfredo Pacheco(Red Bulls, USA), VÃctor Turcios, Manuel Salazar, Deris Ariel Umanzor,
MIDFIELDERS– Eliseo Quintanilla (Ermis Aradippou, Cyprus), Arturo Alvarez and Ramon Sanchez(San Jose Earthquakes, USA), Christian Castillo, Juan Carlos Moscoso, Salvador Koreas, Osael Romero, Denis Alas.
FORWARD– Rudis Corrales, Rodolfo Zelaya (Leon, Mexico), William Reyes,
Yes, that's Arturo Alvarez, former U.S. national team and youth national team player now officially called in by El Salvador. Apparently his application for switching federations under FIFA's new rule was expedited since he had already tried to switch to El Salvador earlier this year (He made his debut for El Salvador against Trinidad & Tobago on Aug. 12).
When should we expect the U.S. team's training camp roster? Try a week from today based on U.S. coach Bob Bradley's habit of waiting as long as possible to name his camp rosters.
What do you think of this squad? Nervous about the U.S. team's next qualifier, or do you have confidence that the Americans will take care of business at home at Rio Tinto Stadium?

Alvarez is hurt won’t be playing this weekend =[
This is the only opportunity SLV has to advance to the best 4 qualifiers for the WC in SA 2010. I see a better improved team wanted to get a place in the best 4 qualifiers and this is a key game to prove themselves that they deserve a place in Concacaf. Delos Cobos must prove that he has the ability to break thought Bradley’s defends and score goals early in the game and maintain the physical ritms thought the whole game otherwise his chance of getting a place in the WC will be dune. Spite of the fact that the game will be in the remote North-central of the the country, I expect a lot of White and Blue fans roaming around in the rio tinto stadium. SLV win by a gooooal!
I would start Demps up top with Davies, bring in Jozy late, and put Feilhaber and Torres on the field together. Then maybe we could play some possession football instead of inefficient-frustrating-kick the-ball-up-the-field-as-far-as-possible-and-watch-Ching-blow-it football.
Dang bradley!!
I do not understand the people who think Dempsey should be a sub
Edwin Miranda of Miami FC should get another look from El Salvador. They are sleeping on him. He is solid defender and attaks well. I think that he would be a good fit for them for this game against our boys. His physicality would be useful in trying to stop US attackers and he is very familiar with the US style of play.
Even if they called him up and had a few more guys like him that the US should (key word) break them down. If the US can get one early then I could see a possible 3-0 type of result.
But nothing is a given. Teams stumble.

Bring in Dempsey around 60′. For either Holden or a Forward. You could potentially start Marshall and push Boca outside.
Gang, You need to pay attention. Jermaine Jones and Mo Edu are both still out injured. As noted, Gooch is out for yellow card accum. My guess is Spector will be back at RB and Clark at D-mid:

“Call up Jones (if he’s healthy) and I’d like to see Castillo get a chance. He’s at least better than Bornstein and Pearce” COULDN’T AGREE MORE!!!
Maurice Edu should hopefully be back from injury by the (early September was the time frame for his return). I’ve always thought that he is a stronger option than Ricardo Clark. If we can get our entire team on the field while healthy, the United States is the best team in Concacaf.
Looks like they’re planning on packing it in….
bringing a lot of D
@DC Josh You need to wear a diaper all the time!! We have never lost to El Salvador at home in the last two decades… It is a must win but I am confident the USA will win this game and the one at T+T. GO USA!
I wish Arturo Alvarez the best(as long as he doesn’t do well in US games). It is the same situation as Jones, and considering the ever diminishing spots for MLS players on the US roster he was always going to be a long shot to get into the team.
I can’t believe some of you! Ye have little faith! This is El Salvador haha. I predict at least a two goal win. Don’t let the Mexico game bring down your confidence, we have NEVER won in the Azteca.
Without Gooch getting a call up due to suspension, I’d like to see one of the following in camp:
Castillo, Jermaine Jones, Orozco, Mo Edu (if they are all healthy)
All four of those guys are individually better than Heath Pearce, and maybe Bornstein equally regarding Orozco and Castillo. But we need to get some fresh faces in our backline and midfield. Our depth in the back is horrible, we can’t take the current guys to South Africa. I’d like to get a look at Castillo at LB, with Boca moving to the middle next to Demerit. I also think Spector is better than Dolo getting forward. He is trained in the English system after all, which produces some of the best fullbacks.
Don’t fret my children, all will be okay come September 5th.
I’m not too worried about this next fixture. While El Salvador is an improved squad this year, they are not as strong on the road (which will be their downfall). If the US defends well and builds and holds possession they should be fine and win 2 or 3-0.
Leonardo, Gooch is suspended for the El Salvador game
US destroys little el salvadore 4-0.
Cbr – i think u forgot Gooch in there

Cream rises to the top: Davies and Jozy have that zeal and voracity for goals we need. they’ll win the game for us.
i wasn’t impressed with the always-behind-chasing-Cherondolo, i’d rather go for the calm on the ball Spector
Call up Jones (if he’s healthy) and I’d like to see Castillo get a chance. He’s at least better than Bornstein and Pearce
T.C.B.
US should roll over this team. Yes, this is a significantly improved El Salvador team in comparison to the last few years…but that isn’t saying much.
Also, William Reyes is a Honduras national team reject….so with Alvarez they have two players that didnt make the cut with their country of origin…though US should have Jermaine Jones…so it seems the US made out better with the new FIFA rule.
I hope we win. But given who the coach is, well, I rest my case.
alvarez sucks. i remember him when he played for usa. i was thinking this guy had horrible first touch poor vision and horrible ability to cross. he had a little speed and foot strength thats about it.
Alvarez actually played his first game for El Salvador against trinidad. Anyway, Not worried about that game at all because Altidore and Davies will terrorize the Salvadorian defense. Easy win for the usa.
I figure Bradley will start the same team that he started in Mexico, even though they lost. That alone will keep El Salvador in the game. The game should be a win but the Bradley factor will make it a question.
Wanna bet Ching, Boca, Dolo & no attacking mid all start? We’ll be lucky to tie if this is true
I like Alvarez well enough, but he is extremely one dimensional. He won’t make much of a difference.

I’m looking at the boxscore/report of the last El Salvador game on FIFA and I see that Pacheco didn’t even play…also he’s been on the bench the last two games in NY…Would ES really play him in this game with all the apparent non-activity?
huricano, well said heh.
a little bit nervous, but at the same time very confident.
Wish I could make it to the game but it’s 1300 miles one way from St. Paul. Too far for me. I looked into Amtrack and that’s too slow. They only average about 45 mph. It’s much quicker to drive. Airfare $250 RT. Good price but not worth it to me.
Very nervous. All qualifiers are toss-ups, even the “easy” ones. US needs to win and by a lot. T&T is much more important if we get this win. If the US shows up to play at T&T then no Zamora or Samuel can beat us. Remember, we went up against Fabregas, Xavi, David Villa and Fernando Torres… and, oh yes… 2-0.
I think the presence of a Red Bull basically guarantees a US victory.
Here’s a clip that breaksdown every play by AA in his 1st game…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfVc_-d3i3Q
I don’t see anything mindblowing…but surely he will be motivated all things considering…who knows.
We’ll destroy El Salvador at home. The predictions of 3:0 sound about right.
Bobby Zamora and the word “quality” should never be included in the same sentance. Ever.
I hope we are primed to annihilate them in this game, if nothing else to teach them a lesson for all their faked injuries when they led us in San Salvador. With no club activity, Jozy mauled them as a sub. If he is in form, I could see us winning 3-0 with a Jozy hat trick.
But as others have said, El Salvador now has more talent than in many years, if not decades. Alvarez played vs TnT and had a shot to tie it late, but skewed it off target. He was pissed that we never called him up. Yes, he has his talent, but I think he has not matured and is capable of no more than a glimmer of quality here or there.
IF WE CANNOT GET THREE POINTS AGAINST EL SALVADOR,
WE DO NOT DESERVE TO BE IN THE F*ING WORLD CUP!
PERIOD. END.
Anything less than a win would seriously jeopardize our qualifying for SA, so being nervous is to be expected. Barring some bizarre scenario, like a foolish red card, we should take care of business at Rio Tinto. The T&T match to follow will be much more difficult, given that it’s away and T&T have added two quality players, Bobby Zamora (Fulham) and Jloyd Samuel (Bolton).
Good for Alvarez, he was never gonna get a shot here. We should kill this team, now is not the time for players to start lacking confidence. It doesn’t matter how well El Salvador plays, anything less than a convincing win will be a bad start to the most crucial moment of qualifying thus far.
Any word on Jermaine Jones recovery from injury?
Eric,
Thanks for the find on the age thing. I knew that they were a pretty young team. Yeah they will be dangerous in the next go around for the WC.
El Salvador is not that turnstile anymore…De los Cobos has done a great job in his tenure finding these talents…I believe the median age of this squad is 24.6 (Could be wrong on that)…I agree they are going to be a threat for 2014 (Considering there is more young talent upcoming)…Very nervous indeed…
If the USMNT can’t muster a win in Salt Lake, then it deserves to be in a questionable situation re qualification for WC 2010.
While El Salvador won’t be a cakewalk, this type of match needs to be a certain 3 points if the US team is where it thinks it is in the echelons of world football.
If we can’t beat El Salvador at home, we certainly don’t belong in the World Cup. I’m not worried about this one at all but I am concerned about the game at T&T.
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m so nervous for this game, I have to wear a diaper for the next two weeks. Seriously though, this game is as close to sure thing as the T&T game is. We’re playing at home, we’re playing El Salvador, and we have to win this game.
If we can’t have confidence in our team to win a must win game against El Salvador, we might as well not even watch the world cup next year when every game is a must win.
Well I think we should win but that doesn’t stop me from being nervous because we absolutely have to win. Also El Salvador has quickly become a tough opponent. They could become very dangerous in the next cycle of the World Cup Qualifying. They have a pretty young team if I remember correctly.
Hopefully Alvarez has a bad game and doesn’t want to show US on what we missed out on. Other than this game I wish him all the best. I still think we should have called him in, he fast and is a true winger and also has a wicked shot. Lets Go USA we need a W.
3-0 we will win, there is no doubt in my mind.
Alvarez is straight, but i didnt care if he went to El Slavador or not
Man, I hope we at least tried calling in Alvarez instead of Rogers for the Gold Cup. The guy has some serious quality.
I’m very nervous. This is pretty close to a must win.
