The U.S. men's national team will look to add a vital three points tonight in Sandy, Utah when it takes on El Salvador in what is basically a must-win match for the Americans. A loss or a tie and the Americans could fall into fourth place in the CONCACAF qualifying round, with two road games in a row to follow.

The United States will be heavily favored tonight, but it won't soon forget how tough it was to take a point from El Salvador in a World Cup qualifier at the Estadio Cuzcatlan less than six months ago. El Salvador jumped out to a 2-0 lead before a rally led by Frankie Hejduk and Jozy Altidore helped the United States pull out a 2-2 draw and a point that is proving to be extremely valuable right now.

For those of you who don't remember them, or just want to see them again, here are the highlights from USA's 2-2 tie vs. El Salvador back in March:

What do you think of tonight's match? Do you believe in the U.S. team and see it delivering the sorely-needed victory? Worried El Salvador will steal a point? Confident that Charlie Davies will score a goal and unveil a new dance?

  1. Wow, what a half. Charlie Davies is playing really well, so is Dempsey and Landon Donovan. We could have had a couple more goals.

Good half, aside from that piss-poor clearance by Bornstein. What is he doing?!

  2. Howard, Spector, Bocanegra, Marshall, Bornstein, Donovan, Feilhaber, Bradley, Dempsey, Altidore, Davies.

    Sounds good to me.

Also, Connor Casey isn’t even in Sandy…sweet

  3. 1. Give some respect to Hejduk

    2. El Salvador isn’t so bad. They’re no Guatemala when it comes to unsportsmanlike behavior.

    3. Sucks that their room was robbed. English link?

    4. Where is the best stream tonight? Unfortunately, ESPNclassic no longer exists on my tv roster.

  4. The truth is Our Youth has surpassed our Veterans. Davies,Altidore,Adu(in-form),Spector,Bradley,etc. are much much better and consistant than Ching,Bocanegra,Hejduk, etc. Why? well you have to remember everytime a NAtional team takes a step to the next higher level…it means its youth has surpassed the Veterans….for US soccer it is happening right now.

  5. “I can see why the Mexicans bag on us for whining so much. ”

Mexican’s bag on us for everything. How would you feel if you had short man’s syndrome?

Next time you get pissed when our little chia pet neighbors throw piss bombs or spit at our players, remember what it’s like to be them.

  6. No offense, but relying on players like Hejduk and Ching is not the answer for this team. It is time for Spector and Jozy to get their time in the light. Otherwise, we will be going through the same cycle that Mexico is going through for relying too much on Borghetti, Blanco, and Morales. Davis took that spot in the Confederations and hasn’t looked back. Why can’t Bob do that for the other younger players?

  7. hejduk is a beast! he is like 40 years old tho and we currently have a few backs that are in their prime but Hejduk is a US Soccer legend over the past decade.

should be a fun game tonight.. 2-0 USA! 2 goals from the stank leg.

  8. what this doesn’t show is all the pathetic, blatant, time-wasting that the Salvadorans did by feigning injuries. They got winded at the end and they are cheats. I don’t think they will seem as energetic at the altitude of Sandy. USA 3, El Sal 0. Let’s teach them a lesson.

You act like the US doesn’t do it either. Its part of the game. Its good time management when you do it but when others do it its cheap.

Either way, most of the Salvadorans were not in form. They had been fighting with the Salvadoran Federation of some compensation money, so they didn’t get a chance to train. Either way, what are you complaining about, the US got a point that they only deserved for 8 good minutes of play. The Salvadoran team played great for 75 mins of the game.

  9. And Christian pops up again. It may be futile to remind you of the reality when you constantly warp things…but Davies clearly wasn’t time wasting. Overcome your amnesia to recall that he was substituted out after that. He was arguably the USA’s best player and was clearly not feigning injury. Things are not always equal. Proceed to go back under your rock until the next chance you get to bash the American team, not sure why you take such an active interest

  10. Not to be a blatant homer here or anything, but even though he lacks in the technical department, it’s widely acknowledged that Hejduk is a huge leader on this team, and he has ALWAYS played his heart out for us.

Also, he’s what you might call “directly responsible” for both of those goals that night in El Salvador (assisting the first to Jozy, scoring the second), so I might look into reconsidering your position on ole’ Frankie Hejduk. Just sayin’, the guy’s done nothing (lately, if at all) to earn any hate.

  11. Hejduk is worthy of respect but his National Team days are over. I think the point, though poorly stated, is that our team is much stronger now than when we last met ES. I agree with that and we are playing at home. USA 2-0 ES.

  13. Great footage. Good play by Ching to help set up the Heydude cross. However it is clear that he struggles to score on the international stage. that last shot when Jozy puts Ching thru should have been a goal. really hoping for Charlie and Jozy in front tonight.

  14. We actually looked really good on a few of those attacks. Imagine how much better we could be at home without Kljestan, Johnson, and Califf on the field.

  16. We’re a completely different and more competent team than we were at the last meeting. We no longer count on losers like Kljestian, Beasley and Hejduk. Hopefully we go with a confed cup offense (Jozy and Davies up top w/ donovan and dempsey wide) and put 1 or 2 away early on.

  17. That point th U.S. stole at the end looks pretty big now.

They better win tonight in a dominant way or big trouble is going to come a calling.

I am actually worried about the U.S. qualifying in the top 3.
