Cervi to make Celtic debut in Toronto

American goalkeeper Dominic Cervi is set to make his club debut for Celtic FC tonight as the Hoops take on Benfica in the CNE Cup, a friendly at BMO Field in Toronto.

Celtic will be without most of its top stars, which are away on international duty, including starting goalkeeper and Polish international Artur Boruc. That will allow Cervi to get the nod and play in his first official match since signing with the Scottish giants last summer.

A first-round pick by the Chicago Fire in the 2008 MLS Draft, Cervi bypassed a chance to sign with the Fire to try his hand in Europe. After a lengthy wait to acquire an Italian passport, the 23-year-old Cervi signed with Celtic.

What do you think if Cervi making his first appearance for Celtic? Think he has a future in Europe? Still think he has too much hair to be a top American goalkeeper?

  2. Well our keeper Pickens (Rapids) looked like Jesus for a while, so I think lots of hair is acceptable. Then again, he just came from the Scottish Premier League, and now his head is shaved. So maybe there is a hair requirement for MLS

  3. cjbrown, I believe the largest Celtic club outside of Scotland exists right here in greater Toronto. Celtic has an absolutely massive following here.

You’re right about the Portuguese, though. There are a ton of them. It’s too bad this is both sides’ reserve team, because there’s potential for an amazing atmosphere .

  4. Every time I saw Cervi play I really was disappointed in him. This was when the Fire was trying to sign him. At the time I was glad they didn’t becuase he looked really poor.

  5. Perkins has hair, Cervi’s looks pretty similar. That’s why Howard and el Guzano will keep for the foreseeable future. But they have time to shave it off or lose it.

  6. he says he expects it to feel like a home game, a sea of green and white in the stands. but i wouldn’t be surprised to see more Benfica fans out there at BMO — lotsa Portuguese in Toronto.

  7. Barring a catastrophe with Howard and Guzan, this kid isn’t going to see much national team action. But I root for all the American players out there (except for the traitors).

You probably said the same thing about Howard vis a vis Freidel and Keller when Howard was that age. Of course he’s not going to see any NT time now, but he’s only 23 (a baby in GK years); who knows what his future holds?

  9. seen him play. His size made him a force………the one weakness he had was he looked shaky in coming out of his box and challenging a 50/50 ball with an incoming foward. But that was before Celtic trainning…….lets see if he improved in that area.
