Most eyes may have been on Port of Spain last night, but there was still an important MLS match last night as Kansas City traveled to face D.C. United. Making the playoffs is realisically out of reach for Kansas City at this point, but for D.C. United every league match is vital as they fight for one of those eight spots.

Before lashing out at MLS about the conflict with the international break, note that this game was originally penciled in for August 8, but was rescheduled due to the friendly D.C. had with Real Madrid.

And while D.C. walked away with the three points last night, they'll have plenty on their minds after conceding a number of easy chances to Kansas City, only to be rescued by some shocking misses by the visitors. Davy Arnaud missed two easy opportunities in the first half, amongst them.

Luciano Emilio's 39th minute goal was enough to prove a difference, sealing three important points for D.C. and vaulting them back into the top eight — though they've played the most games in the Eastern Conference. Injuries haven't helped D.C., and they face Seattle Saturday night in their stadium that continues to show its age.

The Wizards needed a win to keep their playoff chances on life support. A win would only have maintained status quo, but as it stands K.C. remains quite the long shot, sitting nine points behind the clubs tied for the last spot.

Think D.C. will make the playoffs? Did anyone actually watch the game last night?

  1. I’m saying punish all who can be seen to dive in a replay, or don’t use the replays. Is this the only dive the CCL has ever seen on replay?

I don’t think soccer should have instant replay, but if they’re going to do it, it should be consistent.

Montero should be held to the same standards as the rest of the league. That’s all I’m saying.

Eduardo is being held to a different standard.

  2. CHARGE!

Why punish Eduardo when we have video replays of hunreds of divers! Punish none, or punish them all!

(SBI-So your saying Fredy Montero should be punished?)

  3. Looks like Jewsbury was doing some more acting this week.

(SBI-I thought the same thing when I saw that picture. The Midwestern Eduardo (ducks as Arsenal fans charge).)

  4. Picture caption:

Jewsbury and Gomez inexplicably stop playing soccer and begin competing in the ancient tradition of battle-dancing. The photo captures the moment both competitors realize their dance moves just aren’t sick enough.

  5. RFK is an absolute mess. It is absolutely the worst stadium that I have ever been in. DC needs to shut the place down. Sometime, in the not too distant future, someone is going to get hurt badly.

And the fact that it’s still on the short-list for a 2022 World Cup bid is an absolute joke. Why is RFK even in the discussion when Real Madrid filled up FedEx field? I can’t even believe that we’re holding a WC qualifier there, and I live very close to the stadium.

  6. DCU may slip into the playoffs, but they are a team in serious disarray. Soehn feels compelled to play his aging South American even though they produce little or nothing. Gomez was invisible, particularly on defense. Moreno was a turnover machine. Fred — as a late defensive substitute — Wow! The youngsters — especially Pontius and Wallace show great promise, but display little improvement since the start of the season. Does DCU actually practice together? And Soehn has no confidence in any of the team’s mid-season acquisitions. It looked like he believed in Julius James, but then he pulled him in favor of Avery John — whose best days are in the past. DCU — a team in need of a serious overhaul in the offseason.

Conrad: You stepped on my foot!

Christian: cause it’s one, two, three, kick, not one two kick!

  8. Both teams had shocking moments. Emilio can only poach goals now-a-days it seems. Pontius had 3 opportunities mostly on headers to score. Though he might not have scored in an MLS game in a while, he still shows his eye for goal. He also linked up well with others. Have no idea what Chance Myers was thinking lifting his leg up while on the ground and “kicking” Moreno for that second yellow. Also, KC’s had some clear chances that didn’t even go on frame. DC was lucky to get away with that one. I think it came down to who had the least shocking attempts on goal. It seemed like DC made Hartman work a tad more than KC asked of Wicks.
