This weekend’s Soccer on TV

U.S. El Salvador (Reuters)

by GIANFRANCO PANIZO

With the majority of the European seasons off due to the international date, this weekend boasts a plethora of international matches for all to watch.

The game most Americans are looking forward to will be on Saturday night as the United States takes on El Salvador in a critical World Cup qualifier, a qualifier that could give the U.S. some breathing space, or place them in a hole in their qualifying campaign.

Other intriguing World Cup qualifiers on tap include Italy-Georgia, Spain-Belgium and Portugal-Denmark. The Portugal-Denmark tilt has significant appeal not just because of Cristiano Ronaldo, but also because the Portuguese are in desperate need of points in their quest to qualify for next summer's tournament.

Wondering what other games might be worth catching a glimpse of? Here is the rest of this weekend's Soccer on TV:

  1. Many thanks Gianfranco for this and all the other lists of games you diligently put together. They are greatly appreciated. Very nicely done.

  2. “Shame about Heath Pearce. The Turkish club offered him good money, maybe peanuts to what he had wanted but considering he was dropped from a crappy 2 Bundesliga team, he should have taken it. If he did well and got a start at the WC, he could have moved back to a better club.”

Show me proof that Heath Pearce did anything wrong–that he was greedy. Seriously, show me a reputable website, outside of Bursaspor’s home site. Or a report of what really happened.

  3. hoping Torres scores a hat-trick for Spain. He needs to get on the score sheet for qualifying cause Villa has 5 goals already I believe in just 3 games.

Hi Neighbor, I watched WC 06 at Cheers on Augusta Road. Also if you call office of Carolina Elite SA – I’m sure someone there can help you. Good Luck!

Good luck in the Southeast getting soccer on a TV in a bar, restaurant, bowling alley, Chucky Cheese or skating ring this Saturday night. Let us know how it goes.

  8. Can anyone suggest some places in NYC/Manhattan that will show the Argentina-Brasil match (besides Nevada, which will be jam-packed)? it’s PPV so not a lot of bars will have it.

  9. Brazil v. Argentina is on PPV ($35 on Comcast), bit the REAL problem is that it directly conflicts with the US match. 8pm ET on Saturday. 🙁

  10. I see MLS only has 3 games scheduled for this qualifying weekend. Maybe that will help calm the cries from all those folks on the message boards who think MLS needs to adopt some “universal” standard of taking WCQ dates off.

Wait, so what’s this? MLS isn’t the only competition playing league games during a qualifying weekend?

Brazil and Mexico are pulling a Garber?

    I love it!

  11. You hear it now. Spain-Brazil WC final.

USA, England, NL, Argentina, Denmark, Australia all make it to the quarter-finals along with Brazil and Spain.

but either way looks like Boca will be starting as leftback with Bornstein as his no2. Spector will be RB with Cherundolo being no2.

  13. I’m hoping both Altidore and Davies score tomorrow and Wednesday. Maybe if Cooper scores a few more goals, he can get a call up in October.

I know Brian Ching is going to the World Cup unless injured but is it possible Cooper can come to? EJ and Casey are only good as late super-sub, Cooper has a shot to be 3rd striker behind Altidore/Davies.

Hell Cooper is better than the likes of Matt Taylor, Jon Paul Pittman, Jemal Johnson, Marcus Tracy. Sadly those guys will never see Gold Cup much less the World Cup.

Everyone in our NT needs to be playing abroad
