Altidore facing heat for tardy tweet

Jozy Altidore's days at Hull City could be numbered, and his chances for playing time in the immediate future seem remote, after he became the latest athlete to get in trouble for posting something revealing via Twitter.

Altidore is being issued an undisclosed fine by Hull for tweeting an apology after arriving late to the club's match vs. Portsmouth on Saturday. Altidore was already punished for arriving late by not dressing for the match, but he drew harsh criticism from Hull manager Phil Brown, who believes the incident never should have been revealed to the public.

While Altidore was wrong for showing up late, do you think Brown was right to make such a big deal about the tweet? Disappointed by Altidore's tardiness? Who do you see leaving Hull first, Brown or Altidore?

  1. Random Hull fact of the day. People from Hull are called “Hullensians”

Hopefully Jozy learns from this whole event. Unfortunately crap like this can follow a player throughout his career and he can start to develop a bad rep. The manager does seem like a worthless a’hole but he is the manager and you have to pretend like you respect him so you can go to another club someday you enjoy more and pretend you like that manager also. If you get lucky one day someone will pay you a lot to write a book and talk about how much you disliked all of the managers you played for. Unfortunately Jozy might twitter all of this thoughts before he can get to that point.

  2. Compare to J Spector who by all accounts is an immaculate professional. And he has been since signing at ManU when he was a teenager. He is hitting the books when not practicing. He made big money at a young age and with a big club. He is a fixture in the EPl already. When he is healthy, he plays. This is the way his parents raised him. This is what the SoCCERS taught him.

  3. Brown should have tweeted an apology for subjecting fans to that game. They bunkered for 90 minutes at home against the 20th place team in the Premiership. It was one of the worst games in the history of the league. How about Brown take some criticism for that?

  4. Apologizing is a mistake? What was the team business exactly? His being late was his business, and it would have been known within an hour of the match ending anyway. Hardly team business.

  5. So in two weeks Jozy’s gone from learning big life lessons as Charlie Davies nearly DIES after being out hours after team curfiew.

Jozy speaks about how it makes him realize career, life, etc can be taken away in an instant.

Fast-forward a few weeks and he’s texting while driving and showing up late for games.

    Learned a lot, huh Jozy?

  6. He is not “all over twitter and facebook”. This is one of the biggest myths that has emerged over the past few days. Jozy makes far, far less use of either platform than most kids his age do. It’s actually kind of disappointing for those who thought these would be good ways to follow one of their favorite athletes more closely.

And Brown didn’t even know what Twitter was, so his condemnation is just idiotic.

  7. Not a big deal. He pays the fine and he learns a very important lesson. Twitter will only get you in trouble. Hopefully, he learns to be on time too.

I think Brown was completely justified in his statements. It was an innocent mistake by Altidore but definitely a mistake. Don’t tell the public team business

  8. Jozy is responsible. For half of their goals. Last I heard, anyway. He needs to double his work ethic. We are all blues by Charlies accident but now it’s on his broad shoulders
Make it happen J. Put more time in. Fight and win your starting spot

  9. Dammit Jozy. Lazy, stupid, selfish. This proves rumors about him lacking professionalism. This is a job and when you screw up early you’re in the doghouse. Phil Brown is a dud but no excuse for this on Jozy’s part.

  10. Bottom line – show up half hour early for practice and team meetings. Always unless doing something else team related then show up 10 minutes early no exceptions ever

The tweet is a bullcrap tack on punishment BUT if tweets are frowned upon then don’t do it. Harsh lesson but learned. Surely.
Phil’s nature is showing. Josh should be on the field every game anyways.
He’s partially responsible for 1 or 2 of their 4 goals this season. Phil can go suck his mic.

Jozy has plenty class. But he’s young and has much to
learn. Focus and put in extra time every moment possible and he will find the field
    Otherwise lalalala

  11. haha, one thing Ive learned about these guys following there tweets is that they’re not very professional. Freddy is in love with the “fame” soccer has given him, not the game as he always claims..

  12. By the way, I guarantee if Jozy HADN’T twittered the apology (and reason for not making the bench), Phil Brown would not have blinked before explaining to the media that Jozy was late, and therefore not on the bench. “In-house” my rear-end. Brownie is the guy who scolded his players ON THE PITCH (in the cold, mind you) during half-time last season.

Twitter issues aside, Jozy is the starting striker for a World Cup-bound national team, and Brown gives him 20 minutes every now and then for a team that desperately needs goals and muscle.

The fans are fed up, and one assumes the players don’t have much time for Brown’s self-serving antics.

  13. that is NUTS. Brown and Hull are GARBAGE. Jozy did the right thing apolgizing, why on Earth would Brown be ticked off? Makes no sense at all there must be something we don’t know.

  14. Agreed… to a point. While his words were innocuous, he at least should have checked with someone before posting his comments publicly. While fans may love the inside scoop, as a professional athlete he needs to learn a little about PR. If he had made the same comment to reporter before the game I think he would have receive the same punishment. It just demonstrates his lack of maturity.
Hull fans are already mad at Brown for not playing one of their most expensive signings, so why not let Brown answer why Altidore did not dress? He is just using this whole thing to deflect much deserved criticism for his player selection. Isn’t part of a manager’s role to make sure his investments pay off?

  15. Reading Twitter posts makes me feel like a creep. Currently, Jozy is trying to get a local girl’s number so they can “chill.” She said back: “Unfortunately not.”

Isn’t it weird to be broadcasting your life — unfiltered — to the public??

  16. Hull is not scoring goals and by most accounts Altidore has potential to be a quality striker at that level. I doubt the Hull fans will be quiet if Altidore sits for too long.

Same as in the NFL when a young good QB prospect is sitting on a team that’s not winning.

  17. on that note… I think some of these young guys need an agent/nanny sent over to keep them from acting stupid. Sending updates on twitter is cool if its approved by your team, coach, and/or agent. Right now Altidore and Adu are twitter happy but riding the pine (albeit for different reasons).

I think Phil Brown may be out of line and out of touch, but hopefully Jozy will learn that being a professional isn’t just about how you play on the field. Notwithstanding, I hope this doesn’t kill his confidence and he continues to improve.

  18. Altidore should get out of there as fast as he can. The team’s bad, the coach is looney, and the kit’s colors are among the worst in the universe.

  19. Without having ever coached a single minute of soccer in my entire life I can say with full confidence that I am a better coach than Phil Brown. Unless I had to wear the headset, then I might be just as bad.

  20. while dumb, I’m glad he got in trouble for trying to do the “right” thing after he messed up but, why the hell is he late for a game?!?!

  21. I don’t know the answer, but does Hull have a policy regarding Twitter (et. al.)? Or do they have a policy about commenting on personnel decisions? If so, then Jozy was in violation (whether or not it was only to apologize). If not, then Hull may be overreacting, but I certainly wouldn’t complain if I was Jozy. Either way, pay the fine, show up on time, work hard, and move on.

  22. Come on now, SBI is the best US soccer site on the web and you want to pick on Ives for what is in your opinion an exaggeration? Why don’t you start up your own flawless, completely objective blog devoid of all speculation and/or opinion? I promise we’ll all read it.

  23. Thank you for saying this! I think a lot of people are overlooking the fact that this might be one of the best SBI headlines of ALL TIME. Jozy may go somewhere else. Phil Brown may go back to telemarketing. But this headline will ALWAYS be legendary.

  24. Phil Brown doesn’t exactly have a reputation for being a “player’s coach.” Last season against Man City they went in to halftime down 4-0. He wouldn’t let them go into the locker room and proceeded to chew the team out on the pitch in front of the visiting Hull fans. After a hot start last season the club has gone down hill. I think it’s not long till he gets the sack.

  25. Why doesn’t he just quit? His boss is an ass and he doesn’t get to play, so what’s the point? He’s only 19 so there’s plenty of time to play in Europe. Jozy should stay in MLS until a team that actually wants him offers him a job.

  26. well, that answers my question from the other day when i asked, why didn’t jozy dress….
His days at Hull could be numbered? Really? Over a tardy and a tweet???? That seems uber harsh, but I guess I’m no pro footballer or coach.

  27. Phil Brown is a pudwhack. Suspending Altidore for being late is not only appropriate, it’s the right thing to do. But I fail to see how it’s private business. Especially when it comes from a manager who dressed his team in public last year.

Not only that, but Jozy was apologizing for his lateness. And now no one will wonder why he didn’t dress either — everyone would agree with him being benched for tardiness. Like it or not, Hull’s a Premiership team and player discipline is never going to be a truly private matter in that league. Too many people interested, and too much betting money flying around.

  28. I’m starting to realize why ‘ull city aren’t very good. They bother themselves with this nonsense. Do you think the Bengals care if OchoCinco tweets a lot? The KID offered an appolgy for being late. I’d consider that taking responsibility for your actions and being responsible. He’s also showing accountability to the loyal supports of Hull. Brown’s an idiot. Maybe he should coach NY Red Bulls

  29. Jozy, how can you be late to a Primiership match? If I ever had enough talent to be on a team like that you can bet I would be early to every practice and match. He is a professional. Professional should be on time. What happens on the team stays on team. I have no problem with the fine.

  30. I’m guessing that Ives has been watching Hull’s games this season. They look lost and Phil Brown is being arrogant about it. Let’s see you’re in the relegation zone and you look terrible every game. Even the games that you try to bunker down and get a tie your team looks inept. The coach will be on the hot seat if this continues or is that the “hot headset”?

  31. Look on the bright side, if his “days are numbered” he will go to another team where he will be playing. In fact I hope this happens because he NEEDS to be playing.

  32. Jozy and all these other self-important idiots should forego the “tweets” and spend more time getting in shape and sharpening their skills. I think if I were the manager, I would bench anyone on my team who opened a Twitter account.

Now, since such foolishness apparently is part and parcel of the current sports world, I think Jozy’s manager overreacted.

  33. Jozy is the striker with the most upside on Hull but it is up to him to prove it. Most people don’t have much respect for Phil Brown but the fact of the matter is he is the manager that lead Hull to the top flight for the first time in the teams history. He isn’t going anywhere and even if it is a bit excessive to be upset about Altidore’s apology on Twitter it doesn’t change the fact that Jozy was late in the first place.

  34. I’m worried that Brown’s public statements mean that he’s already decided that Altidore is a bad fit. JA needs playing time. It’s going to be hard enough getting on the pitch while JHV is in form. Now, probably no chance.
