One unbeaten fell over the weekend while another kept their record intact in another busy weekend for college soccer. A month after entering the top 10 for the first time in school history, Monmouth University saw their unbeaten record end after a 13-0-1 start to 2009. Severe rain prior to the match left the field in poor condition in their 2-0 loss to St. Francis University.
The nation's other unbeaten school, Akron University kept their streak alive with a win against Buffalo. Teal Bunbury accounted for the game's only goal as the Zips maintained their unblemished record with a 1-0 win. Two higher profile games — against Penn State and Michigan State — await in the next week as they surge closer to a unbeaten regular season. Still, hard to know how good these Zips are until they hit the tournament.
A high profile, top 5 match-up between two ACC powerhouse went the way of the Carolina based school as Wake Forest edged rivals Maryland by a 1-0 score. A Wake penalty in the game's sixth minute stood up as the only goal. There's a three-way tie at the top of the ACC between those two schools and North Carolina. Elsewhere in top 10 action, No. 8 Louisville beat Rutgers 2-0, and No. 9 Charlotte could only managed a 2-2 draw against Fordham.
There was an upset out West as No. 2 UCLA fell to Stanford, 2-0. The loss snapped the Bruins' 10-game unbeaten streak, as none of their 16 shots found the back of the net. State counterparts UCSB avoided the upset trap against Cal State Fullerton, as the Gauchos cruised 2-0 behind two first half tallies.
