Charlie Davies continues to show signs of improvement and make significant progress this week as he took his first steps since the fatal car accident that left him with multiple broken bones.

Davies underwent surgery this week on his fractured elbow as well as to stabilize facial fractures. He has already begun the rehabilitation process and has been encouraged by the more than 10,000 emails of support sent to him by fans from around the world.

While he has taken his first steps, Davies still has several months of recovery to go, so it is far too early to start thinking about a hard time-table for his potential return to the soccer field. That said, the news of him taking his first steps will provide encouragement to all his American and French fans.

  1. CD9 will be back, maybe not as fast but with more heart and a better IQ for the game over time. He was still getting better and developing. I wish he didn’t break his leg if this accident had to happen. Accidents like this changes a persons outlook on life and makes them use their abilities to the fullest when they recover.

If he was an NFL running back his career mightof been over, but I think he can recover and be better than he was before. Maybe without as much raw talent but with more developed talent that is going to happen faster assuming his approach is forever changed

  2. i want Davies with the team in S.A…..obviously not as a player (god that would be nice if he makes a miricle comeback) but just by reading the tweets of guys like Edu, Jozy, Holden….they got a brotherhood thing going on. I’d love to see him there cheering on the team

  3. i wonder if teammates have visited him in his rehab. i know nothing was more meaningful than when someone was right there in front of you, talking to you and holding your hand. it means the world!

  4. ya Chuck D!!! Ive been in the hospital before with a spinal cord injury. and hospitals suck. but its great to hear Davies is healing quickly. it really does make a difference for an athlete. people in the hospital who were sedentary before their accidents took longer to heal. anyway, im glad he is doing a lot better. with all the doctors ive talked to, its so much better to have something be broken then to have nerve damage.

get well soon Davies! we got ur back!

  5. Great news. Brings a tear to my eye, honestly. It’s still going to be a long road, but with all of us behind him Charlie will make a full recovery. Keep up the work and spirits!

  6. Uh, I don’t know about Bueno being goat trash ’cause he hated on ChivasUSA more than any MLS team. He really did go out of his way to kiss LA Galaxy ass.

He got called a “homer” religously by posters on his old blog and then he quit on it.

Bueno seems to be banking on kissing Mexican soccer fan’s ass to build his career.

    It’s a free country.

  7. I’m with you Smits. Ever notice that he never gives the USMNT any credit for anything? Also he only writes if a Mexican team has recently done better than a US team.

  8. I have a titanium rod and screws in my hip and femur, and I took my first steps the night I got home from the hospital after surgery.

…I ended up damaging some internal sutures and getting an awful hematoma, but that’s another story.

  10. Don’t Mind that piece of Goat Trash.. Bueno’s a hack and will never give MLS any respect. I suggest you just stop reading his articles all together. I know I did.

  11. Playing Fifa 10 makes me realize how much I loved this guy….I know it’s a video game.

But subbing Conor Casey in for him by no means is fun.

  12. Excellent news about CD. Recovery is going to be slow and very hard work, but hopefully knowing about all the support he has will help keep his spirits up.

  13. Perhaps he had a metal plate put in. I had one put in my leg after it broke, and would’ve been able to walk had I not torn a ligament as well. My brother broke his femur and was putting weight on it pretty quickly after the break, if I do recall…

  14. I agree, it seems like Bueno has an axe to grind. Its gotten to the point where I can’t take his articles seriously anymore. Any thoughts, Ives?

  15. Great for CD. Here’s hoping WC2010.

But I want to bring something else up for group discussion… Why does SI’s Luis Bueno hate MLS? He treats MLS like a red-headed step child in his columns. Sure it’s deserves some but I feel like he blasts the league in every other article he writes. Am I alone here?

  16. Excellent news. I just read this, from a Sochaux supporter, in a comments section for a blog post (via Who Ate All The Pies) about the incident. It’s very strange (hopefully just because of the translation), but really sweet all the same:

‘I’m living in Sochaux , I love FCSM , and I’m very disapointed to us ..

Davies , we love you , we are wive you …

A frenchy , who is american today …

In french we said : ” courage mon pote “‘

  17. I’m glad he’s improving. I want to know what happened that night, who was driving, what the cause of the accident was, and who the other passenger was. When is this information finally coming to light?

  18. Man – way to go Chuck. That’s a pretty quick turnaround to already get on the feet. Awesome stuff.

You can bet he’ll do all he can to get back by SA, which would take a miracle, but I have no doubt he’ll be walking/running in the next year and with that work ethic and drive be back on the field for the future.
