CONCACAF Champions League: Match Night Commentary

HOU_DYN_LOGO

The Houston Dynamo's second foray into the CONCACAF Champions League has left their quarterfinal chances to the very last matchday — with their fate in some other club's hands. And unlike yesterday's matches involving MLS squads, the Dynamo must get three points in El Salvador against Isidro Metapan (10pm, FSC) in order to have any hope of finishing second in Group A.

Even with a win tonight, Arabe Unido must lose to Pachuca in Group A action (8pm, Telefutura) for Houston to qualify. So prior to its match against Metapan, Houston could already be eliminated. Unido sits at 10 points, three ahead of Houston, put themselves in this position with a 4-1 win against Pachuca back on August. Isidro Metapan has failed to score a goal or record a point.

A win combined with a Unido loss would leave both teams tied at 10 points apiece in Group A, with Houston holding the head-to-head tiebreaker. They beat Arabe Unido 5-1 at home and drew 1-1 on the road.

  1. Dynamo are really, really missing Clark tonight. I know he gets a lot of criticism, but he is such an incredible presence in the midfield. If he’s in the game, Dynamo have way more possession, fewer defenses lapses, and more offensive potency.

  2. Agreed. The fact is, Metapan sucks. hard. The commentators need to recognize that the Dynamo are playing like crap against a crap team, and there’s no excuse for that.

  3. Screw Christopher Sullivan! I can understand impartiality, but this dork just worships the Latin American teams. Would be nice if FSC — a U.S. network — employed a commentator with an inkling of pro-MLS bias. The guy sucks as an announcer too. Seems like he’s always trying to impress the audience with his futbol knowledge. Get the f*ck out

  4. Wondo wasn’t that good though and it was clear that he’d reached his peak. At least with someone like Oduro, if you teach him how to finish, he becomes a great striker. It was clear that Wondo wasn’t going anywhere.

  5. Methinks you have alternate get-out-of-SJ motives.

And as I type this, Oduro puts a good shot on goal (saved by keeper).

    Appearently Oduro scores in practice.

  6. It’s really not an issue when people are healthy and not cup-tied. Oduro is realistically striker number four behind Ching, Landin, and Weaver

  7. Cameron is not a good enuff player to merit a Nats’ call-up. He’s just a bigger Bornstein – athletic, with limited skills and sense of the game.

  8. Ok so at halftime, Kinnear should sub in Onstad for Oduro, moving Hall up to striker. I’d give him decent odds at nabbing the hat trick.

  9. Wow… terrible by the Metapan keeper to go out and blast Ching when the ball wasn’t there yet.

    Awesome that Tally Hall scores.

    Hall 1, Oduro 0

  10. And Oduro with the shank! Take a drink.

How does he miss that? He has the whole goal open and he hits it against the direction of travel across the line.

  11. Oduro seems to do everything in his capacity to NOT score goals. That was an easy chance and he didn’t put it on target. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen him do that.

  12. Except unlike Beasley, he’s really big and strong too

Definitely a great prospect, but yeah, the real problem is figuring out where to play him to take advantage of all of his skills

  13. Really feel like Cameron should get another USMNT call-up soon…could be a great utility guy on the roster who could play almost anywhere. also seems to be somewhat fearless and aggressive, like a young dempsey or (God forbid, can’t believe I’m jinxing hi like this) a Beasley in 2002.

  14. 17 goals against and none for until tonight when the Dynamo come to town… MLS… this just makes you look silly when your teams do this… increase the damn roster sizes and league minimums…NOW

  15. Not all Houston’s players are American nationals, but…why do they all have lead-foot first touch? Compare the reception of passes between Metapan and Houston. Houston passes end up bouncing askew, chopping at the knees. Metapan: on the ground, on the foot. Why?

  16. Wow…talk about not effort from Houston…they look like they could care less… I have seen college teams this year that would beat this Salvadorian lot…sad, sad, sad

  17. 3-5-2 would be fine if the defenders were Hainault-Boswell-Cameron, but with these guys? Horrid. Of course, the Dynamo don’t really have a lot of options with the lack of depth at the moment.

  18. wow way to get your first two goals of group play in the sixth game. Seriously- my high school team could have beat Metapan and probably Tally Hall from 15 yrds away
