USA fans to show support for Davies tonight

Charlie Davies 6 (ISIphotos.com)

When the U.S. men's national team takes on Costa Rica tonight (8pm, ESPN2) in World Cup qualifying in Washington D.C., U.S. national team fans will honor the one American starter who won't be in attendance: Charlie Davies.

USA fans are being encouraged to stand and cheer and wave these signs in the ninth minute (8:01-8:59) of tonight's match to honor Davies, who is in a Washington D.C. hospital recovering from major injuries suffered during a fatal car accident late Monday night.

Fans not attending tonight match can also send their messages of support for Davies to his email address, charliedavies9@yahoo.com, where messages are being printed up and passed along to Davies.

  1. the smoke bombs looked stupid. They blocked the cameras and videos from capturing the sea of 9. You couldn’t see most of them. Also people were covering there faces and stuff.

HOwever, when I could see the posters, they were awesome. I hope Charlie liked it.

  2. I lol at the fact that everyone ignores that someone died. It’s all for Charlie Davis. We don’t care about the life of someone we don’t know. She never existed to us so why should we care right? Nothing wrong with that. It’s just that sometimes these same people can be so righteous about “protecting/valuing human life.”

  3. Just sent Charlie an email. I hope he gets mine and lots and lots and lots of others. I think it will help for him to be able to read (good lord knows he’ll have lots and lots of time to read over the next few months) about all the support. I think Charlie will be surprised to see how many people are thinking about him and his situation and hoping he recovers fully and quickly. Also, I’m not forgetting the tragedy of the Ashley Roberta death. But I’m doing what I can to help the situation by writing Charlie, and until I can think of more to do, I am not “glossing” over anything in the meantime.

  5. This may be stupid, but: it might be sorta cool if the RFK staff had a clip from that Beatles tune where Lennon’s voice is repeating, “Number 9. Number 9…”

Maybe that’d be a little bit spooky or something. I don’t know. But maybe it’d work.

Did you expect less? I mean they chanted Osama at one of their games in regards to one of the most tragic moments in US history.

I’m a supporter of the Mexican National team and i can not everyone is like that and many are actually concerned for Charlie or when things happen tragically. Don’t make assumptions of other people because not everyone wants the worst for other people or nations.

  8. Valdo,

I too just read Medio Tiempo and did not really find any disgusting comments like RM07 stated.

One made a stupid comment and everyone else jumped all over the person. People on that site are questioning what CD was doing out so late. And this is the same question other people are asking. But that aside, let’s kick some butt tonight and help classy Honduras qualify.

  9. RMO7 – I just read the Medio Tiempo comments only 13. You saw one comment with jajajaja translation hahahaha and jumped to conclusions. That comment was directed at someone else who he felt left an unnecessary comment. Everyone one else wishes him well and gives him props on his game.

If I hadn’t gotten yelled at for printing receipes and using the fax machine last week, it wouldn’t have stopped me either :p I printed out my 7 copies for my group going, and stood in front of the printer, looking really suspicious, to grab them without them being seen. I forward the link to all of my mates going, and they have extras printed out.

  11. I think holding up the signs is a great idea. It shows that he is missed out on the field and that we wish him well in his recovery. However, I think that it is a bit much for all of CONCACAF to sport the #9. Lets remember that while it is a terrible accident, Charlie is not dead and does not need to be “remembered”. I doubt that doing something that is often done for players who have died would make him feel better about this tragic situation. Showing support is great but we dont need to act like he died and “remember him” for this game. We need to be letting him know that there will be no need to remember him because he will recover and play soccer at a high level again.

  12. I’ve been very impressed with the Sochaux web site, http://www.fcsochaux.fr. Huge outpouring of support. Props to Melissa who just posted there.

And…not a single instance that I could find of sniping about who was driving, why they were so late, etc. It was all supportive and heartfelt.

  14. ko’d: What Danny said — except that others seem to believe they have more of a “connection” with Davies than other people that die or get hurt.

Apparrently you have an issue with the use of the word tribute in this context. Let me spell it out for you courtesy of Merriam-Webster – 2 a : something given or contributed voluntarily as due or deserved; especially : a gift or service showing respect, gratitude, or affection b : something (as material evidence or a formal attestation) that indicates the worth, virtue, or effectiveness of the one in question

I think, either of those definitions is appropriate in this instance.

Yes, everyone realizes that there were others invloved in the crash, but those posting here are supporters of the U.S. team and therefore Charlie Davies. It is only logical that those persons would want to support Charlie.

Someone came up with a great, respectful, appropriate method to show support and affection for Charlie that won’t interfere with the game (unlike smoke bombs) and yet you want to whine about it because it bothers you that someone else died and isn’t being honored.

If you have a suggestion as to how to honor the others (don’t forget the other injured person in the car) throw it out instead of complaining about people “glossing over” those persons.

  17. How dope wuld it be, if every team in concacaf playing tonight sported a number 9 on the sleeve or sumthing, i think that would be the best thing that culd happen, kinda how when Sean Taylor died, the teams put his number on their helmets, i think that wuld be amazing
