USA vs. Costa Rica: Match Night Commentary

U.S. CrestCosta Rica Crest

The U.S. men's national team is set to close out its World Cup qualifying campaign tonight against Costa Rica (8pm, ESPN2/Galavision). The Americans have already qualified, but Costa Rica needs a win tonight to ensure a berth in the 2010 World Cup.

Tonight's match is being played under a bit of a somber cloud as the U.S. team copes with the news of Charlie Davies' serious injuries suffered in a deadly car accident. The United States will need to be focused and show the determination it showed in Saturday's victory in Honduras if it will hold off a Costa Rica side with World Cup dreams to fulfill.

I will be providing a live commentary on the match throughout the evening so please feel free to follow along here. As always, you are welcome to share your thoughts and opinions below.

Enjoy the action (commentary is after the jump):

——————

FINAL– That's all for now. Look for more coverage of the match (as well as a medical update on Oguchi Onyewu) on SBI.

Thanks for following along with the commentary. Good night.

——————

FINAL– WHAT. A. GAME. There is the concern about Oguchi Onyewu's knee, but tonight is a night to remember, a night where the American team capped a successful World Cup qualifying campaign with a gutsy, relentless and unforgettable finish. The Americans come back from two goals down and find a 95th minute equalizer with ten men. Unreal.

——————

FINAL- The U.S. team is thanking the crowd, with captain Carlos Bocanegra speaking to the crowd.

——————

FINAL– Bryan Ruiz's two goals took the breathe out of the USA, but for the second straight match the Americans should incredible heart to come back and fight for an improbable result.

——————

FINAL- USA 2, Costa Rica 2. One of the most amazing performances and finishes I can recall. So much for this not meaning much to the Americans.

Honduras is in the World Cup and can thank Jonathan Bornstein.

——————

96th minute– USA 2, Costa Rica 2. Bornstein's header ties it and this place went nuts. UNBELIEVABLE

——————

95th– GOAL BORNSTEIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

——————

95th minute– USA corner.

——————

93rd minute– Long free kick for the USA.

——————

90th minute– Five minutes of stoppage time.

——————

89th minute– Some crazy antics late. Costa Rica head coach Rene Simoes is sent off.

——————

87th minute– Altidore is trying to will a victory, but can only do so much.

It is a bit interesting that Bob Bradley will save his third sub more often than not, but tonight he used all three and Onyewu gets hurt.

——————

85th minute– Onyewu is hurt and USA is down a man because they have no subst left.

——————

83rd minute– Onyewu is down. He's hurt and it's a left knee injury.

——————

82nd minute– Altidore is playing inspired tonight.

——————

80th minute– Altidore broke in on goal but sent his shot wide, Good chance and sequence there. USA keeps on threatening.

——————

79th minute– Kenny Cooper is on for Casey. Some fresh legs and a player who will finish chances.

——————

78th minute– Rogers comes somewhat close on a header, but its wide.

If USA ties, and Honduras wins, Honduras goes to the World Cup. Honduras is still winning.

——————

76th minute– USA is pouring on the pressure. Can Costa Rica hold on for 14 more minutes?

——————

73rd minute– ROGERS WIDE!!! So close for No. 9. Americans can smell it. They're coming for that point.

——————

72nd minute- GOAL USA!!!! Michael Bradley scores to make it 2-1 Costa Rica. We have a game folks.

——————

70th minute– Nervy moments for the USA defense. Robbie Rogers is in and wearing No. 9, a goal from him would be pretty fitting.

——————

69th minute– Mexico ties it up, 2-2, vs. Trinidad.

——————

68th minute– Honduras leads El Salvador, 1-0, on a Pavon goal. They're praying for the USA comeback.

——————

67th minute– Torres with some nice early touches. Looks sharp.

——————

65th minute– Trinidad is up, 2-1, on Mexico.

——————

64th minute– Torres comes in for Feilhaber, who didn't have the best game, but I wonder if him sitting so deep in midfield for most of the match didn't limit his effectiveness.

——————

62nd minute- Jose Torres is set to come in, presumably for Feilhaber.

——————

61st minute– Navas does well again to get in the air and break up a USA cross. Ruiz is the MVP tonight but Navas has had a sharp match.

——————

59th minute– Ruiz goes for the hat-trick with a hard shot but Howard makes the save.

——————

58th minute– Who will score the next goal here? A USA goal would change things considerably.

——————

55th minute– Costa Rica is staying very compact and not leaving much room for the Americans to pass it around in the final third.

——————

52nd minute– Americans continue to control more of the possession but are still not making the final play.

Navas does well to jump on a cross. He's been very good in the air tonight.

——————

50th minute– USA with a promising sequence but Bradley can't get his shot on frame.

——————

48th minute– Bradley might want to consider Torres for Feilhaber at some point.

——————

47th minute– No subs for the USA yet. Altidore stays in and starts a nice sequence with a good turn and pass.

——————

46th minute– And we're back.

——————

HALFTIME– I'm scrapping CoverItLive for the night. The internet connection is too slow and I don't want to risk another dead period in the second half.

We're about to start the second half.

In other scores:

El Salvador 0, Honduras 0

Trinidad & Tobago 1, Mexico 0

——————

HALFTIME– Conor Casey has not looked sharp so far this half. How long will Bradley stick with Casey? Will Bradley turn to Kenny Cooper at some point?

——————

HALFTIME– I will give the CoverItLive another go during halftime to see if it works again. If it acts up, I'll scrap it for the traditional running commentary.

——————

HALFTIME– Some disappointing performances in the first half, but Altidore and Donovan have stepped their games up. Now if only their finishing would kick in, then the USA could get back into this game.

——————

HALFTIME– Costa Rica 2, USA 0. A pair of great Ruiz goals and a ton of wasted USA chances.

Mexico is losing 1-0 to Trinidad & Tobago so as of right now USA leads the group still.

——————

45th minute– And just like that, Marshall is healthy and ready to come on. Boos rain down.

USA corner.

——————

45th minute– To be fair to the Ticos, the replay shows Dennis Marshall coming down hard on his shoulder.

——————

45th minute– Looks like Costa Rica will be taking a page from El Salvador's book of time-wasting.

——————

45th minute– Altidore had a look in front of goal but had it saved. Too many chances wasted for the Americans, but they're creating and pressing hard.

——————

44th minute– Donovan with a chance but it's saved by Navas. Altidore is fighting hard, but needs to be careful about a second yellow card.

——————

43rd minute– Bradley's shot is blocked for a corner.

——————

42nd minute– USA free kick and it's Altidore drawing another. This one is on the edge of the area, near the left corner. Dangerous chance for Donovan.

——————

41st minute– Ruiz has long been Costa Rica's best player and tonight he has shown why, with his combination of touch and speed, he was simply stellar on both goals.

Now, it is up to the USA to start converting these chances they are creating. Donovan has had a few, and Altidore has been sharp, drawing fouls and creating problems for Costa Rica's back-line.

——————

40th minute– We are back and it is 2-0 Costa Rica. Bryan Ruiz with two beautiful goals to stun the USA, which had been playing well early on. Americans have created several chances, and drawn dangerous free kicks since Ruiz's two goals, but haven't finished one yet.

——————

PRE-GAME– Here are the USA subs: Guzan, Conrad, Spector, Rogers, Clark, Torres, Cooper

  1. Now looking at the tying goal from a corner again, I truly don’t know what Costa Rica was thinking. Free headers can happen regardless, but most egregiously there are 2 CR players standing above the box doing nothing ten yards away from the action, and one of those two is Bornstein’s guy who chose to take small steps the OTHER WAY, OUT OF THE BOX as the play unfolds. He starts to drop to his knees after the ball in in the net. Whatev, thanks.

  2. Re: midfielders. Glad someone finally mentioned Rogers — he looked great as a second-half sub. Torres looked really good. You can see that Mexican league confidence and composure oozing from the kid. I think the problem with Feilhaber and Bradley is that they were playing out of position. For some reason, Benny was playing more of the defensive role with MB pushed up into attacking, when it should be the other way around. Not sure why they were playing that way. Doesn’t make sense when you look at their skillsets. Cheers all

  3. Goalscorer24–it’s been raining in LA for 2 days…

I’m rather shocked at the state of the US defense after what I saw at the Confed Cup.

I know he scored a goal tonight, but Bornstein is not good enough. Bocanegra played his first decent game tonight since his return from injury, but that’s only if we give him and the team a mulligan for that 20 minutes or so of bad play in the first half. Oneywu is now out and when he heals we don’t know where his much needed PT will be coming from. Demerit is threatened by his hedge clippers accident, oh, sorry, I meant a contact lens, Spector needs to find something or he’ll be a disappointment, and… gawd.

No one has any clue who the back 4 will be next summer. IMO Demerit is key, I hope he gets through his eye problems.

  4. Jozy was the player of the match!!! He made the most difficult plays, then passed on to Conor the lucky Casey! For those Casey fans,.. yeah,…take a seat please!!

Jozy was fantastic, anyone Hull city fan watching this must be exited! You don’t have to score to be the best in a game, especially when the defense has you mark like glue, yet he created chances for his teamates. Davies & Jozy that is our future! I hope ADU,Edu,Torres,Castillo, join the action.

Great game beside the gooch injury.
