USA vs. Honduras: Where will you be watching?

USA Crest HondurasCrest

As we close in on three days until the win-and-you're-in World Cup qualifier between the United States and Honduras on Saturday, it is time to start discussing where U.S. national team fans will be watching the match.

This question is a more important one for this match than most thanks to the fact that the match is only being shown via closed circuit, forcing U.S. fans to find a place to watch it.

SBI will be in San Pedro Sula covering the match and for those of you either can't watch the match, or find viewing options on the internet, feel free to make SBI your place to follow the match. I will be doing a live commentary of the match on ESPN.com on Saturday night so be sure to check that out as well.

The number of venues showing the match in English on closed circuit is now up to 29, while there remain almost 200 Spanish-language viewing opportunities throughout the country.

Where will you be watching the match? Planning to make the trip down to Honduras? If so, let us know. If you have already settled on a viewing option via closed circuit, or if you want to drop a plug for a venue showing the match, please share the info in the comments section below.

  1. My guess for ESPN not carrying the game, even though they said they “carry all” USNT games is that it might interfere with a poor baseball or football fan.

For crying out loud, the USNT could clinch qualification and there will be no “public” coverage. That is shameful.

Oh, I am only a mere 6 hours from the nearest english broadcast. Internet viewing.

  3. fischy – The rights holder is taking a minimum of $1000/establishment up to $2000, depending on the size of the venue. So, depending on number of venues, could be 3 to 4 hundred thousand. Not sure if there is any other revenue stream, hopefully not, and I’m hoping it cost him at least 6 figures to license the game.

  4. @Zenabi, that’s awesome, good PR for FCD.

I’ll be passing through Seattle, anyone know of a place showing the game?

  5. Gingerballs, JMart, Derek thanks for the info. $15 is better then $20, and I would like to watch with other US fans.

This whole closed circuit thing is stupid! But boycotting it I think will make little difference.

I hope we play with some passion. See you guys there! Go USA!

  6. It does seem unlikely that the distributor is taking in a lot of money this way. Less than 300 sites — and they can’t be paying more than $300 for the rights. So, that’s less than $100,000 — maybe a lot less. Surely ESPN would have paid $100,000.

(SBI-Fischy, the number that has made the rounds is a starting figure of $1000 per venue, and that’s on the low side. I’m pretty sure Madison Square Garden is paying more than that. Let’s say they get 250 venues at 1K apiece, that’s a minimum of $250K (probably closer to 300K). Something tells me they paid more than that, much more, so hopefully they’re taking a beating.)

  7. Tir Na Nog in Philly, unless Fado’s shows the game — the person answering a phone call there last weekend said they would be showing the game… I think Fado’s is closer to my hotel, but it’s close. If anyone thinks one is better than other, I’d appreciate the heads up.

As for the boycott — doesn’t make any sense. The bar probably won’t even know how many people came in just for that game, and the distributor won’t get any extra $$ if I go — so, I don’t see how a boycott will prevent this from happening in the future.

  8. Some of the comments on here have to be some of the worst grammar I’ve ever seen on the internet. Hopefully English isn’t your first language. I usually hate people who point out stuff like this but I see statements with question marks at the end and someone said they are watching in a computer.

  9. Illegally on the Internet. Like any good American.

I didn’t realize Kells was showing it here in Portland. Now I have another reason to boycott them. That’s gotta be the worst “Irish” bar in the US.

  10. Goalscorer,

I forgot to ask, but I called again and they said $15.
I don’t really care. This is a big game for us. I just want to SEE IT LIVE (and drink beer with crazy fans.)

I highly doubt that this is a trend. If people will pay for feeds, this makes is just as likely that the networks will see that people are watching and will pick up the games.

  11. @ A.S.

I don’t see how paying a bar $20 to watch the game helps the media company. The bars have already paid for the feed. The media company doesn’t receive a percentage of the cover fee. Quit crying and go fork over the money to see the damn game.

Don’t use that as a reason to not go to a game that may enable the USMNT to qualify to the World Cup.

  12. JMart, do you know if the cock and bull are charging a cover charge?

I didn’t ask, but I am sure they will. I’m pretty torn about the situation; I want to support the Nat’s but I don’t want to support this ridiculous sitation.

  13. Ives (or anyone else) – Will there be a replay of the game on any tv station in the US? I would absolutely go 24 hours without internet if I could watch it on Sunday night or even Monday at 3am. It’s not like it’s hard to avoid soccer coverage in the US.

  14. Does anyone have any idea how these yahoos make more money doing it this way than selling the rights to ESPN, Fox, Gol, or Univision?

    What are the numbers?

The only Internet feed will probably be out of Honduras itself, or maybe a Chinese station?

  15. MG3 is right, the bars have already paid from $1k to $2k depending on the size of the establishment – that is paid up front. We tried to work out a deal for the English language broadcast in LA at another pub and the company selling the rights is a pain in the a$$, they overnight a special modem which they then have to trouble shoot, and its simply more trouble than its worth for many bars.

No way can I just dismiss the match that may get us qualified. If you run the numbers, it doesn’t seem like a very profitable business model, depending on how much the underlying rights cost. Hope it is a grand failure. If there is any advertising during half time, take notes and fire off e-mails about boycotting the advertisers.

  16. @GoGunners justin.tv might not be so reliable with a closed-circuit feed. I mean, it might work, since there might be folks outside of the US who can put the feed up, but without a public US feed, it’s less likely to work well for this match.

  17. MG3,

I’m heading down to Charlotte on Saturday for the Skins/Panthers game Sunday, there is definitely a bar showing the game in the city?

  18. There should be 1 or 2 pirated feeds from Honduras around the ‘net, as the game is on Honduran TV and usually there are Honduran TV streams of their WCQs.

That’s the only way I’ll see the game.

  19. There are two places, in all of New York City showing the game. I’ll be arriving at Nevada Smiths several hours early to secure a spot.

  20. Just to repeat what I’ve written before – anybody who pays to see the game is PART OF THE PROBLEM.

If this type of thing is profitable, it will occur more and more often. The only solution is to make it not profitable.

Accordingly, I will be watching Ives’ coverage on ESPN.

  21. Fans who think that if they boycott the game they will help ensure that this fiasco won’t happen again are misinformed.

The bars have already paid, it won’t affect how much money the media company will receive. You should support the bars that support soccer and go spend the $20 to see a game that might send the USMNT to SA.

  22. The only way we as fans can avoid situations like this in the future is to withhold our money and refuse to go to the PPV venues. So that’s what I’m doing.

But I’ll be at the RFK match in person. 🙂
