What’s your take on the new SBI comments section?

You may have noticed a different layout to the SBI comments section. We have launched a new look and set-up that will allow readers to not only respond directly to other reader's comments, but to also personalize their comments with icons.

What do you think of the new look and feel? Love it? Hate it? Want the old format back?

Let us know what you think of the new comments format in the comments section below.

  1. But it wasn’t difficult to find people who replied directly to you before because they usually used your user name, and if you’re using Firefox it’s a cinch to find and jump to text on a page. There’s no similarly easy way to find recent comments. In fact, you’ll probably never even see this one.

  2. Will take some getting used to. Obvious plus is ability to reply directly. Another is having a visual cue for posters we want to follow.

A minus is that it does seem to sprawl all over somewhat. If you could find a way to keep it more compact, that would be good. As others have said before, possibly reducing the 2/3 of the page (on the sides) and increasing the 1/3 in the middle.

  3. From a design perspective, the “said…” and “said in reply to…” is redundant and takes up space, which distracts from the actual comment. In the same way, the largish size of the square images distracts from the comments. I mean, obviously the person “said” the comment – does it have to say every time “beckster said…” or “vlk said…” or “kpugs said…”

I’d suggest making the square images slightly smaller and just putting the person’s name directly below it, i.e. have kpugs’ square image and then below put “kpugs” and leave it at that.

(SBI-I don’t have nearly that much freedom to change the look of the new comments section. it’s either what it is or the old way, no in-between.)

  4. i like the idea of icons. I agree the overall format (narrow reply lines, etc) could be perfected, etc, but I like the visual cue and aesthetic of icons.

  5. I hate it…not because there isn’t enough room in this small column, but because this comment section is blocked at work. Not the web site, but just the comment section.

  6. I’m fine with it either way – I just wish the entire middle column of the site was wider to allow for longer lines – especially when trying to space out lineups.

  7. Icons are a bit silly and I’m sure they make reading on my iPhone a bit problematic (slower load and not ideal formatting) but are a cool idea nonetheless. Being able to directly respond to someone will be amazing.

  8. On the other hand, you will know when someone has replied to you becasue, well, there it is – right beneath yours.

  9. I concur …

    So much better! Great job!

Can we get some better formatting for BB mobile devices? It’s hard to read when I am at work. A dedicated WAP site would blow my mind.

  10. It’s actually going to be really annoying to try to find the most recent comments when they could be anywhere on the page. These SB Nation sites (like http://www.amazinavenue.com/) do a really good job with that because they thread replies too, but they highlight all new replies since you last visited the page, and they let you clear the highlights or hit a button on your keyboard to automatically bring you to the next highlighted comment. It would be ideal for things like “Your Running Commentary”, but I’m guessing it can’t be implemented on this site.

  11. Testing the connection with Facebook. Several posters have brought up good points. 1. Move the avatar below the alias. 2. Widen the center column and shrink the outside columns after the jump on each story to allow more space. 3. Some way have the ability to subscribe to a thread so it emails us when someone posts. This was mentioned, but not sure about it: http://disqus.com/

  12. In general I like it. I agree with the other comments that the comments section is a bit width constrained – especially with the new reply feature.

Maybe we can move the icon under the name to free up some space?

  14. i like it better, the threaded replies are a big boost, but can we get the formatting changed so the icons are underneath the aliases? Seems like it would make them take up a lot less space.

  15. My work puts all kind of filters and crap on the net – so right now the type all bleeds over the margin – so I have the vertical line through the text. So far today at least initially the comments wouldn’t show up until I refreshed or clicked directly on the comment link…
