For Akron, the rest of the season begins now. 20 wins from 20 matches have come and gone, and now five matches stand between them and a unblemished record in 2009. Teal Bunbury and the rest of the Zips head into the NCAA Tournament with a chance to finish what they've started, and will do so as the number one overall seed.

The University of Virginia checks in as the No. 2 seed, on an 11-game unbeaten run and eight game shutout streak that saw the Cavaliers emerge as ACC Tourney champions. No. 3 is Wake Forest, Big Ten champions Ohio State are No. 4, and UNC round out the top five seeds.

The advantage goes to the top 16 schools, who earn a bye and host the second round game. The ACC and Big Ten are the power conferences, each with four seeded teams. On Thursday, the tournament kicks off around the country, with the first round winners traveling to face the higher seed in the second round on Sunday.

The complete bracket and list of seeds can be seen here. Here's a list of the first round match-ups:

  1. UCSB lost to UCI in finals…not too flattering for your teams cause. Also wasn’t the game at home since they were #1 seed? even more sad….Big West was not that strong this year.

  2. How can UCSB not be seeded?… the RPI rankings are a joke this year.

SDSU had a high RPI and were .500 and Indiana was Top 5 RPI with a weak record too.

    NCAA you are pitiful.

  3. Punisment, perhaps, for losing in the Big East quarterfinals? If so, a very harsh one, as the “loss” was on penalty kicks to a decent Notre Dame team. In South Bend.

  4. South Florida are an Excellent team with Hasani Sinclair and a few other Youth Nats. How the hell are they the ones drawing Akron in the second round if they win? they are like 13-3. Also watch out for Michael Green from New Mexico.

  5. I’m surprised that a couple of teams like Providence DePaul, William & Mary and Creighton were NOT selected for the tournament and that the West Coast Conference received FOUR invitations.

  6. Okay, so my USF Bulls face cross town rivals Stetson who is coached by a former USF coach. Thing is, we already beat them 3-0 this year. Here is the kicker, if we win, we have to face the #1 who we also played this year and got manhandled 3-1.

I’ll be upset if we get kicked out tournament by the #1 seed to years in a row.

  7. wow, no seed for MD, that is rough, i still like their chances, i would not want to be penn state and have to play them in the second round (assuming they beat Loyola)

  8. I’m so happy my University of San Diego boys got a decent #11 seed!!! but have to face the always tough UCSB in 2nd round (most likely)………what is the most surprising is that WCC got 4 teams in! and only 2 teams from Pac 10!!! WCC once they went to a home and away series on their teams always killed each other in conference play with even series. Big turn around for the WCC!!
