The United States bid to host a World Cup in either 2018 or 2022 received a major boost from home region CONCACAF, with confederation board members voting unanimously to back the U.S. bid to host one of the next two World Cups up for bid.
"The United States can count on the full support of CONCACAF, including Chuck Blazer, Rafael Salgueiro and myself," said CONCACAF president and FIFA vice president Jack Warner.
With Warner, Blazer and Salgueiro all holding votes on the FIFA executive committee, the U.S. bid has taken a major step toward securing one of the two World Cups. The 24-member FIFA Executive Committee will decide the venues for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup in December 2010.
What do you think of this news? Excited to think the World Cup could be coming back to the United States?

*sigh*…you just don’t get the logistics of Fifa.
As far as flying between cities, that is a drawback, but it seems like it could be mitigated by regionalizing the groups, ie. Group A plays matches in California, Group B plays matches in the Northeast, etc… By 2022 I think a number of rail projects should be coming online, possibly even the one in California, so that would ease the travel issue.
2006:Germany (europe)
I was talking about the distant future, after 2014. Do you really think Fifa will bypass England for…….???
You want examples, such as South Africa, Korea, or Japan?
Unfortunately most of these stadia ‘coming out of our ears’ are in suburbs, and besides being difficult to get to via public transport, are usually in places full of concrete and strip malls – hardly enhancing the world cup ‘experience.’ You could build the greatest stadium in the world.. but if it’s in East Rutherford, NJ..
I think a very important point is missed. TV Money. Filling up stadiums is not as important a point as the value of tv rights. European TV still pays the most for tv rights from a cup in Europe due to it matching up with its primetime schedule. That is the advantage England has over the US in 2018.
Here, let me fix this for you:
“Don’t worry, Jack Warner is on the take!”
I think we could upset England for 2018. The England bid is shaky at best. We could easily garner some support from Eastern Europe and play off the European fractions against each other.
Ok, after Brazil, what other non-european countries would FIFA pick to host a world cup ( outside the us).
Actually no pattern exists as the every other WC in Europoe has now been broken with Brazil after South Africa… This isnt the 70’s & 80’s, FIFA is going to start spreading it around more, the last 4 WCs shows us that…
No way FIFA doesn’t award us one of the games. With the monster stadia, they’ll be able to dole out temporary naming rights to rack in even more money. So Qwest Field will be Chiquita Bananarena for 3 months (and a pretty penny) and so on.
I’d love for 2018 as I can’t wait already, but as long as we get one I’d be happy. Who knows, maybe Sr. Obama will get some high speed rails going to help with infrastructure. Either way, they know people will throw down to get to games, I know I would.
“they’ll make the most money ”
The key is the identity of “they”.
Hopefully Warner will be gone by 2022. I don’t see us getting it in 2018, it’ll go back to Europe. But I seriously doubt we miss either one
We need to use the NYC Olympic slogan of everyone is a home team in the US for our bid, we may be the only nation in the world where the locals will enough locals will fill up the supporters sections for the cup. It’s hard not to see them come to US and England but there is a chance they may do what they OC did and award it to a country who has never done it maybe Russia or even a Muslim country like Indonesia or middle east like Qatar. I think a lot will depend on how things go in SA 2010, if it turns out well then the 3rd world will get a boost but if it turns out to be a mess then it just gives momentum to the more developed nations.
Don’t worry, Jack Warner is on the case!
Hard to take anything Warner says seriously. Not sure his word is any good.
It doesn’t have anything to do with corruption. Three straight World Cups outside of Europe wouldn’t make any sense.
Not only that, but we literally have stadiums coming out of our ears. The fact that we have 8-10 that all seat 100k+ sitting still all summer waiting for (American) football season tells you all you need to know about capacity in the US. We could play the entire tournament at 1 game/stadium, and never play a game on a field that seats fewer than 75k. And they’re all pretty nice places, either new, or historic and renovated to upgrade the necessary amenities. The one thing we can definitely do in this country is build a stadium 🙂
Additionally, FIFA does repect the US football fan. That is why the US got a larger allotment of tickets than the UK for 2010. They know where the money is. Of course the british would hate our weather for soccer. They’re getting so excited about SA because it will be winter there and they can’t play in the heat. They think it will give them an advantage. I was playing soccer here in Aug and it was about 70 and they were complaining it was too hot. Give it too us in 2018 and it will give us a goal to shoot for for winning the Cup. We will be better than England in 10 years due to the disaaray of the FA.
It was awarded to Colombia, but Mexico took over.
I agree. The old stadiums in the UK are like Wrigley — but without any charm whatsoever. Anfield is basically a steel box in the middle of one of the ugliest and poverty-stricken neighborhoods of England. Why they are considering building a new LFC stadium nearby instead of closer to Liverpool city center is beyond me.
I understand the reasons FOR having the WC in England, but there are just as many reasons (weather, low quality and low capacity stadiums, etc) why the USA seems a much better alternative.
I am an American living in the UK. The quality stadia is sorely lacking here. The only quality stadiums here are Emirates, Wembley, Millenium, Old Trafford, and St James Park. The rest are mostly outdated and tantamount to the Wrigley Field. The US has numerous new large facilities with adequate luxury suites. No new stadiums will need to be built. The only drawback the US has is the need to fly between cities.
People who think FIFA will come back here just because they’ll make the most money should consider the Olympic Committee choosing Brazil over Chicago.
I think it’d be too hard to pass on the USA, but you just can’t take into account FIFA’s backroom dealings.
I don’t think Korea and Japan would like that.
Considering the 86 WC took place in Mexico, I’ll pass on your map. I would be completely lost. Just like you.
The Australian bid hasn’t come together on the stadium front yet. The stadiums are there for Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. But, they haven’t been successful in securing funding promises from state and local governments elsewhere. I’ll be surprised if they get them in time for FIFA’s May deadline to submit full bid details.
Looks like Gulati finally paid off Jack Warner
I hope it will be England 2018 and USA 2022. But I’m worried that FIFA might not be able to resist completing its continent collection, and give 2002 to the Aussies.
Exactly, FIFA likes dollar signs as much as any other organization. One of the two will definitely be here in the states.
You make a lot of good points, and if it were up to me World Cup 2018 would be played here in the States, but three straight World Cups outside of european soil? I just don’t see that happening.
Throw anything that happened before 1990 out. It’s a different world, and soccer is, amazingly enough, even more global than before. They kept going back to Europe because that was where the most support was. Now, there are plenty of other places that are on equal ground in terms of quality of bids. And really, you could make a case that a USA-hosted Cup is almost centrally located. Let’s be honest, European and South American fans will travel, so if you combine the traveling contingents with the many nationalities found in the US, plus the American soccer fan, plus the average American sports fan (some of the best and most enthusiastic in the world, for all sports, just look at how the Olympic games dominate ratings) plus the varied endorsement and business opportunities found here you have a great recipe for financial success. Which, given the state of the current economy, will be a huge, huge factor. That said, FIFA’s corrupt and England will probably win it in 2018, but still. I don’t think anything has to go anywhere, just because of an antiquated pattern.
yeah it was ives bribe money for his dirty acts with mr. warner(recieving it throughly)
ur a sad sad man ives…
74: West Germany
78: argentina
82: Spain
86: Colombia
90: Italy
94: Usa
98: France
02: Korea/japan
06: Germany
10: south Africa
12: brazil
Do you see the pattern or should I walk you through it.
So glad you got to this before I did.
FIFA ain’t dumb. A US World CUp would be a license to print money.
that’s a club competition called the “Football World Series”
Great news. Thanks Jack!!!
I expect ’18 and ’22 to go to England and US. The only mystery is, which one goes where.
Based on years, with ’06 being in Europe, and London Olympics ’12, I think US should get ’18 and England in ’22.
But it would be crock if either didn’t get it — and FIFA would be crazy not to capitalize on the growing US market, which in 8 years will be even bigger.
With Dirty Jack on board we got a good chance.
Why does 2018 “has to go to a European country”? They just had one in 2006.
Ives, any reports of Jack Warner being spotted with several large bags of unmarked bills? 😉
2010: South Africa ( Africa)
2014: Brazil ( South America)
2018: ??? ( Europe)
2022: US ?? ( North America)
2018 has to go to a European country, the best we can hope for is 2022.
ya USA is gonna get one instead, right? i mean concacaf is backing is now! we didnt just host one either.
ha!
england and qatar still get my vote
whats going on with this Club World Cup thing coming around i got an email from RBNY saying they booked a venue?
Nice to see Jackie Baby is on board. I think getting the World Cup would be the best thing for MLS. It would be a shot of adrenaline for soccer passion just like the 1994 cup was. Hell, I remember wanting nothing more in the world then a Tony Meola multi-color goalie jersey. I really hope for 2018. Hopefully by then a MLS2/NASL will have cemented self as the feeder league. The Northeast quadrant of Philly, NY, DC and Boston will have regained fuel from SSS in DC and Framingham, and the mid-west will finally have St. Louis which just might help Kansas City draw some fans.
Thats great! An eighth of the vote right there. I hope we get it for 2018.
Form a coalition with the Africans and half the Europeans next for 2022?
