USA vs. Denmark: Matchday Commentary

USA CrestDenmark logo

The final match of the year is set to kick off today for the U.S. men's national team as the Americans take on Denmark (2:30pm, ESPN Classic/Galavision/ESPN2 after Ukraine-Greece) on the last international matchday of the year.

The United States will be playing its 24th match of the year and this match is an important one as head coach Bob Bradley looks to learn more about the depth of his squad.

I will be providing live commentary throughout the match so please feel free to follow along here. As always, you are welcome to share your own thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

Enjoy the action (Commentary is after the jump):

——————-

FINAL– That's all for now. Please feel free to share your post-game thoughts in the comments section below. Thanks for following along.

——————-

FINAL– Denmark 3, USA 1. The Danes go off for three goals early in the second half to pull away in a game the Americans won't want to remember.

What did we learn? The second tier of American players isn't that strong. Definitely not as strong as Denmark's. The Danes brought in second-tier players who play for top clubs in Europe, quality talent. The U.S. team brought in MLS players and some players who have tried to find places to play in Europe.

Bright spots for the Americans? Not many. Robbie Rogers looked decent in the second half, Benny Feilhaber looked decent in the first half. Negatives? Jozy Altidore was ineffective and Frankie Hejduk was frighteningly ineffective.

——————-

91st minute– USA corner leads to a header that is cleared off the line.

Not a great game today for the Americans. A nice 20-25 minutes to end the first half, but the rest of the day was a study in frustration and ineffectiveness.

——————-

90th minute– Count me among the folks who will be VERY interested to see what players get called into January's national team camp.

——————-

87th minute– So why didn't Bradley make subs earlier? He's always been a coach who leaves his starters in friendlies for at least 60 minutes. He likes giving his starters a good run-out. This loss is down to players not stepping up and making the most of this opportunity.

Bradley isn't blameless though. Hejduk clearly isnt in form and didn't need to play a full 90 today.

——————-

86th minute– Rogers draws a good free kick opportunity. He's shown some good things playing on the right.

——————-

84th minute– I'm not going to completely write off Hejduk after today, but right now he's reached the point where everytime he bets the ball you want to cringe.

——————-

83rd minute– And playing Clint Dempsey's role of John Harkes' favorite target for criticism: Eddie Johnson.

——————-

82nd minute– Dax McCarty comes on for Jozy Altidore. Actually he came on a few minutes ago, but who could tell?

——————-

79th minute– Eddie Johnson has been largely invisible since coming in, though to be fair, the U.S. attack as a whole has been rather toothless this half.

——————-

76th minute-  Conrad with a key interception after another Denmark break. The ref missed a clear handball on an attempted Hejduk clearance. That's the same kind of play that led to Denmark's second goal.

——————-

74th minute– Still waiting to see Castillo get involved. Tough game for him to come into. It's a real mess of a game.

——————-

73rd minute– Feilhaber with a turnover in a bad spot leading to a dangerous shot from distance from Denmark.

——————-

71st minute– Hejduk wearing the captain's armband now. And he makes a good tackle, it was a two-footed lunge, but at least it was effective.

——————-

70th minute– Jimmy Conrad is in for Spector. Clarence Goodson is coming in for Carlos Bocanegra.

Frankie Hejduk is still in the match. Is this one of these matches where you give a veteran the full 90 and then after the match you tell them "See, you don't have it anymore"?

——————-

69th minute– SAVE SORENSON. Good shot from Rogers forces a save.

Conrad and Goodson coming on next.

——————-

68thth minute– Jimmy Conrad is coming in, and if it isn't for Hejduk then I may start bleeding after scratching my head so hard.

——————-

67th minute– Hejduk really is having a shocker today.

——————-

65th minute– Castillo is playing on the left flank, in front of Bornstein.

——————-

61st minute– Edgar Castillo is making his national team debut. He, Eddie Johnson and Robbie Rogers come in. Jeff Cunningham, Michael Bradley and Stuart Holden coming out.

——————-

60th minute– BRADLEY JUST HIGH. Nice pass from Holden to free Bradley at the top of the box.

——————-

59th minute– Robbie Rogers, Jimmy Conrad, Eddie Johnson and Edgar Castillo should all be in this match by now, or at least getting ready to come in. Even just one sub would be good against a team that gained a boost from three halftime subs.

——————-

57th minute– The decision to start Hejduk is only being made worse by the decision not to replace him at halftime. Not sure what Bob Bradley is waiting for.

——————-

55th minute- GOAL DENMARK!!! Bernburg finishes one from about 16 after a clear Denmark flop isn't called. Denmark 3, USA 1.

——————-

52nd minute– On the replay it looked like a handball started that whole sequence when Spector tried to clear the ball away. Hejduk got sucked in, then when Spector came to clear the danger, his clearance hits Absolonsen, who runs onto the deflection, before finding a far-post run left wide open courtesy of Bornstein.

——————-

51st minute- GOAL DENMARK!!! And the Danes just shredded the USA defense, with Soren Rieks tapping home a long pass from Absolonsen. Denmark 2, USA 1.

——————-

48th minute– Denmark made three subs at halftime, with Johan Absolonsen being one of them.

——————-

47th minute– That goal started off a beautiful long pass from Kjaer. And yes, Frankie Hejduk lost that mark. Spector knew nothing about the striker until he was already behind him.

——————-

46th minute- GOAL DENMARK!! Absalonsong comes in as a sub and makes an immediate impact. He runs in behind Spector, latches onto a long pass, then beats Guzan. Denmark 1, USA 1.

——————-

46th minute– We're back. No USA subs.

Cunningham with a dangerous ball in, but Altidore can't get to it.

——————-

HALFTIME– As well as Spector is playing in central defense, I'm beginning to wonder if we'll see him get some minutes at right back at all. It would have been good to see him on the right, with Jimmy Conrad in central defense.

——————-

HALFTIME- Bright spots? Cunningham's goal, Spector and Bocanegra in central defense, and Feilhaber and Bradley in midfield. Not so bright spots? Hejduk has struggled, while Altidore hasn't really put a stamp on this match.

We should see Castillo in the second half, and I think Eddie Johnson has to get a look.

——————-

HALFTIME– USA 1, Denmark 0. The Danes dominated play early, but Jeff Cunningham pounced on a defensive miscue and buried a beautiful goal. Since then it's been an even game, even as Frankie Hejduk struggles to stay on his feet.

——————-

45th minute– Guzan reminds us why you don't want a live mic on a goalkeeper.

Dangerous corner misses everybody.

HALFTIME.

——————-

45th minute– Hejduk with a hard foul, somehow he avoids a card.

Some great touches and moves by Bradley, but his pass is blocked.

——————-

40th minute– Cunningham goes 1v1 against Kjaer, who wins that battle easily. The kid is quality (bad pass after the interception notwithstanding)

——————-

39th minute– SAVE GUZAN! Stops a Bernburg shot initially deflected by Spector.

——————-

38th minute– Denmark on the attack after a missed tackle by Hejduk, but Bornstein heads away the danger.

Hejduk with one of his trademark two-footed lunges. The ref came back and told Hejduk to cut that out.

——————-

35th minute– Martin Bernburg is in for Morten Rasmussen for Denmark. Six subs allowed today for those wondering.

——————-

34th minute– Denmark hasn't done well since the goal, that early possession has been tougher to hold on to now.

——————-

31st minute– CLARK JUST HIGH! Great movement from the Americans, Holden with a nice run and cut-back, Cunningham with a good dummy, and Clark barely misses with a blast from 18.

——————-

30th minute– SAVE GUZAN, A near-post shot is saved by Guzan, though Feilhaber had the post covered.

——————-

27th minute– So maybe there are MLS-like defensive breakdowns on the international level. Poor turnover by the Danish defense and a great finish by Cunningham.

——————-

26th minute- GOAL USA!!! Jeff Cunningham SCORES. He says "Forget service, I'll get the ball myself." Nice finish. USA 1, Denmark 0.

——————-

25th minute– Cunningham runs onto a pass, and catches Sorenson off his line, but sends a sharp angled shot into the side-netting.

——————-

24th minute– Cunningham's lack of impact isn't just about lack of service. Cunningham benefited in MLS from poorly organized defenses. On the international level, against top competition, you aren't going to see the types of defensive breakdowns that can often be found in MLS defending.

——————-

23rd minute– Denmark corner after Spector heads clear a long free kick from the left wing.

——————-

20th minute– Holden with a nice idea to spring Clark on a run but Clark can corral the pass. The U.S. team will want to consider sliding Feilhaber into the middle and pushing Robbie Rogers into the left wing role. As it stands, the current lineup isn't producing much of an attack at all.

——————-

19th minute– Snoozer so far as Denmark's back four knock it around under no pressure.

U.S. midfield needs to start winning possession.

——————-

16th minute– Cunningham isn't doing a great job of reading his teammate's passes and movement. Lack of familiarity is definitely an issue there.

——————-

14th minute– Watching Kjaer operate on the ball you realize why so many big European clubs are after him. He's a big-ticket defender who should yield a high transfer next summer.

——————-

13th minute– Lars Jacobson sends a ball in front of goal that Guzan grabs.

——————-

12th minute– Denmark knocking it around a bit, Americans can't gain possession.

——————-

10th minute–  Wow, Guzan dodges a bullet after Hejduk lets a loose ball roll at the area. Hejduk needs to do better there.

——————-

8th Minute– Feilhaber looks good early. Playing on the left gives Feilhaber the freedom to float, much like Donovan is free to float from that slot.

——————-

7th minute– SAVE SORENSON! Feilhaber with a stripped pass and hard shot on goal that forces a good save from Sorenson.

——————-

6th minute– USA corner kick.

——————-

4th minute– Let's see how long it takes Jeff Cuningham to make his mark on this match. It will also be interesting to see how Feilhaber does on the left.

——————-

2nd Minute– Gronkaer is high with a clear look in front of goal.

——————-

1st Minute– We're off.

——————-

PRE-GAME– Here is the USA starting lineup:

————–Altidore———Cunningham————

Feilhaber—–Bradley——–Clark————-Holden

Bornstein—–Bocanegra—-Spector———-Hejduk

————————-Guzan—————————

BENCH-  Jimmy Conrad, Robbie Rogers, Clarence Goodson, Dax McCarty, Edgar Castillo, Marcus Hahnemann, Eddie Johnson.

MLS scoring leader Jeff Cunningham gets the nod up top, while veteran right back Frankie Hejduk gets the call on the right as Bob Bradley gets a second look at the Bocanegra-Spector centerback tandem.

Jonathan Bornstein starts at left back today, but something tells me we'll see Edgar Castillo before the day is done.

——————-

Guzan; Hejduk, Spector, Bocanegra, Bornstein; Holden, Bradley, Clark, Feilhaber; Altidore, Cunningham

Comments

  1. Bradley has tons of limitations but he is currently irreplaceable. He must have an interested LD and deuce near him. Give Cunningham a few more chances although ultimately i think it will fail but take a closer look until then. Apart from LD the US does not have one world class player. that is the reality and nothing on the horizon will change this. this is a team that doesnt even play their best keeper- friedel.

  2. The bottom line is that the U.S. is not very deep. Once you get past the traditional starting 11 for us, there’s a significant drop off in ball touch and finishing. We’re MAYBE 4 deep past the starting 11…that’s it. God forbid anything happen injury wise to players like Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, or Michael Bradley between now and June…

  3. I agree. This is a warmup, and I think it would make sense to keep Spector where he will be playing in South Africa. And what is with Castillo playing midfield! He needs to replace the suspect Bornstein in the back. Bradley is just a mess. And why his son is someone cemented in as our CM is beyond me. He can’t even complete a ten foot pass. http://www.americansoccerhooligan.com

  4. wow, now we’re trashing little bradley. up there with donovan and howard, little bradley has been one of the most consistent players we have. even in this game, he’s been playing well.

if we must criticize, how about we talk about altidore making NO off the ball runs, clark and feilhaber consistently losing the ball, and how terribly the back four are playing. let’s try to refrain from trashing players who have been holding us down consistently for some time now

  5. Brian I’m with you on the GKs and the DF. But would bring nine (9) midfielders Edu Vs Clark if healthy, and adding Roggers for LM depth. Forwards (3) but only know of one that’s actually a lock to make it Altidore, Cunningham(?), Robbie Findley (?), EJ (?), Casey should never see the NT again.

Agreed with your choices otherwise, and wouldn’t be disappointed with your choices. Now just have to hope that BB will see it the same way.

  6. Isaac agree with you on most of your points. However there are a couple things I believe you overlooked or overstated.

    1) “He’s a great coach” – He’s a good coach but not a great coach. not sure if the USMNT has ever had a great coach.

    2) Starting & Finishing games well as well as Holding the lead is what a coach is suppose to be able to get out of their players. BB is inconsistent in being able to achieve this from the players. Hence he’s a good coach but not a great one. 3) Holding possession…we did that in the first friendly…but still lost. Possession for the sake of possession is fine when you have the lead but when tied or behind you need possession to develop chances. which we didn’t do well in the first friendly.

Testing depth I completely agree that is what friendlies are for. to give players a chance to prove themselves. However when you’re thin/without in a couple of positions these are the positions you need to focus on. In our case Forward, Center Back, Left Back, Wing Midfielders, & Goal.

OK Guzan has proven that hes a good backup to Howard. But we still don’t have our 3rd.

Center Defense – Gooch/DeMerit out injured Spector & Goodson tried out (Marshall as well a little). Did we find a solution? Not really.

Left Back – Bornstein still getting time which is OK as development but to play Castillo (another option) as LM instead of giving him some time at LB. Foolish, unless BB is thinking of using him as a possible LM and a 2nd string LB.

Outside Midfielders – (RM) Holden is a good backup and possibly a starter if Dempsey moves to Forward. but then who’s the Backup to Holden? (LM) Donovan! but if BB moves LD to Forward who’s to replace him? Shift Dempsey to LM? No with weakness in LB having another Defensive liability at LM would be stupid. Rogers? Not ready to play full 90 at international level. Castillo? possible…having two 1/2 harted defenders playing along the left side may provide enough defense…MAYBE. So what did we really accomplish? Nothing as far as I could tell outside Guzan as a lagit #2 keeper and Holden as the #2 RM. both of which we basically already knew. Hence my first comment….BB is a good coach but not Great. and may not be suited for the international level.

  7. Did I say that YOU said these comments a lot? I meant mostly that a lot of fans complain about how the USA don’t win it’s games in a comprehensive way. But I suppose someone with sarcasm skills as vast as yours isn’t worried about that are they?

All I’m saying is, a win is a win, and even if we lost this game, there were certain things that didn’t go for us.

  8. With Russia getting bounced I’d love to see Gus get a crack and see what a coach with some you- know- whats can do with this US squad.

  9. Again, bad coaching. I do not understand why Bradley continues to play long ball. Hey, if you son can’t pass or keep possession then you need to get him out and play those that can. I am tired of the weak game we have. Everyone knows that we can not keep possession and they exploit it. It is time to change him. The Russian coach is now free and Gus would be good for us. He will play talent and skill while creating an offense instead of playing bunker ball and long ball. They need to drop the Soccer out of US Soccer and replace it with US HomeRuns. Gus for the US!!!!!!

Also, why in the world do you wait to make subs til the last 30? Idiot!!!! We needed to see Castillo and what do you do…you suck the creativity by fielding those that can’t get the job done and by not playing those that can. We are going no where.

    Fire Bradley, Hire Gus!!!!!

  10. Did anyone figure out why Torres decided not to come? Why fly around the world to sit on the bench and MAYBE come in for 30 minutes. It just doesn’t make any sense… Don’t blame him for not coming.

The game was ugly for the US. However, there are alot of crappy teams going to the World Cup, maybe we get a decent group.

  11. When I started listing the strikers, I kept checking recent games in hopes of finding someone I missed.

Right now all we have is: 2 big target strikers, who are mediocre and pretty slow. Two speedsters, one of whom I’ve lost all hope on, and the other is 33 years old. Kenny Cooper, who I don’t know how to describe because he’s big and slow, but isn’t a target striker. And of course we have the enigma, Jozy Altidore.

Our only hope is that between now and this summer Jozy starts playing up to his full potential. I know he didn’t score against Costa Rica, but if he could just play with that passion and fire every night, then we’ll be ok. But what I saw out there tonight, was just plain garbage. He was invisible. His touch was off. He was slow. He looked tired. He was about as useless as all the haters claim Conor Casey and Brian Ching are.

  12. Guys, this is exactly what friendlies are for. I believe Bob wanted to give Hedjuk the full 90 because that was his last game. We still have 6-7 more months ’till the WC so things will change.

  13. This in many ways was a good wake up call for 2010. Question is does Bradley have the ability to take the 50 odd players he has played to date and mold a successful team at the level needed to make any headway in SA. We did last summer against top teams, can we repeat?

These games raised a few questions despite the weakened squads. Couple of points – firstly, I think the England Managers call to only field players who are playing regular First team football is good to

note – Altidore and Johnson have been dire and on that basis shud not be on the plane unless we see a major change in the next 6 months. Dont play names play a team who are on form and can win, be prepared to gamble with perhaps younger players with flair to make things happen.

Right now the team has currently no consistent spine –

so where will that foundation come from? Howard and Donavon are part but who is upfront and in central defence?

Bradley has much to do, he needs to step up – I wish the team well.

  14. My, my. That was a miserable performance.

    1. Guus Hiddink is available. I wrote Sunil some time ago to tell him I’d buy him flowers if he secured the Dutchman. He wrote back to say Bradley is the man. Draw your own conclusions about the brain trust.

    2. We need Jermaine Jones to shield the back four.

    3. We need Jose Francisco Torres on the field. Personally I think Bradley should start in a central position and that Torres should play as a tucked in central midfield — on the left but *not* an out and out winger.

    4. Let us pray Donovan remains in good health. Donovan on the wide right.

    5. Dempsey pushed up under Altidore. While we are praying, let us pray that Altidore shakes off the strange listlessness that he is currently exhibiting.

    6. I am impressed by Brad Guzan.

    7. Frankie H. is a true fighter. But he should not be on the field.

    8. Jonathan Bornstein should not be on the field. When the full squad is assembled, Spector, Bocanegra, and Castillo are all significant upgrades at left-back.

    9. Michael Bradley can pop up and score the odd goal. But he’s not a great defensive player, his technique is very limited, and he’s at best a mediocre passer.

  15. First 30 minutes we played ok, then started to fade. The 2nd half it was a complete implosion like we did in the Gold Cup against Mexico. What the hell is that all about?

  16. It will be interesting to see what happens once Jones gets worked in.

The one thing that helps, only helps, cure most ills is a solid presence to hold the midfield together. If Jones is the real deal then a lot of other things have a chance to fall into place.

If not the US is going to need to have all its best players available and in form to get a result because after the first 11 (and that is stretching things) the player pool gets sketchy.

But then, everyone always knew that. The panic on this post is hysterical.

So you disagree with what I say, so you ask me to leave. Well, it HAS been very generous of you to host me here. I’ll try to learn the proper orthodoxy.

By the way, I’m sorry if you’re sick of this argument. It’s the fist time I said that our wins were “sketchy,” which you misread as “ugly.” There’s a difference, I think someone as “smart” as yourself will agree.

  18. what about the confeds cup that we could have/should have won if not for bradleys tactics? or the gold cup where he failed to sub and led our “team” to a flat out embarrasing loss. there are ways to evaluate players and taking almost an entire brand new squad into a TOURNAMENT not a friendly is not the way to do this. Friendlies are. and even then if your evaluating new talent you dont care about how they do with a bunch of other random players, you want to see how well the play with the core team that you have. Bradley has dont an absolutely pathetic job in trying to evaluate players. Castillo should have started over Bornstein, hes had his shot at LB and he has done well but has had his share of issues. if he wants to look at him as a left winger so he can slot donovan up top then great, but start him there and give him a chance to actually impact the game

  20. My 23 man World Cup Roster:

    GK: Howard, Guzan, Hahnemann/Perkins (3)

DF: Spector, Bocanegra, Onyewu*, DeMerit*, Cherundolo, Bornstein, Marshall, Castillo (8)

MF: Donovan, Dempsey, Bradley, Jones*, Feilhaber, Holden, Torres, Clark (8)

FW: Altidore, Cunningham, Casey, Cooper (4)

    ———————–
    Missing out:
    GK: Hahnemann/Perkins
    DF: Conrad, Goodson, Hejduk, Pearce
    MF: Edu*, Rogers, Kljestan, McCarty
    FW: Johnson, Ching, Davies*

    *injury concerns

Notes On Edu and Davies: I

If Davies is somehow miraculously able to get fit by this summer then he’ll be there. Sadly, I just don’t see it happening.

Kinda difficult for me to leave out Edu, since he was playing so well for Rangers before he got injured, but between him and Jones, I’d pick Jones. Edu might be able to get in there if he can Clark’s spot or if we only take 3 strikers or 7 defenders.

  21. Holden not a national team player? I won’t say that he should be a starter but he’s definitely one of our better subs. Great crosser, good energy, and good speed. He nearly got us our 2nd goal in Mexico City with his cross to Davies.

  22. Jesus, what a boring game and terrible looking game.

Hejduk was god awful. I like him and think he’s a pretty cool guy, but once our defense starts getting healthy again, he has no place on this roster. Spector and Cherundolo are far better options at right back. At this point I’d rather see Simek or Wynne than Hejduk back there.

  25. For those questioning Castillo at left midfield, let’s look at it this way:

Bornstein was actually pretty steady this game. I don’t think I can even remember him putting a foot wrong before the goal, and he wasn’t the only one in a good position caught ball watching on all three talleys. Castillo is an extremely skilled, pacy left back with defensive skills around the same level as Bornstein’s. I can see the USA trotting this out at some point:

    ——————–Altidore—-Dempsey—————

    Castillo————Bradley—-Clark———–Donovan

    Bornstein——–Bocanegra—-Marshall———Spector

    ————————-Howard———————–

    after subs:

    ——————–Cooper—-Dempsey—————–

    Rogers————–Bradley—-Feilaber——–Donovan

    Castillo———Bocanegra—-Marshall———Spector

    ————————-Howard———————–

    Seems to work to me.

  26. For the last 3 years, I’ve telling you all here at Soccer by Ives thatBunker Bob Bradley is a joke and it is an embarrassment that he is the head coach of our USMNT and squandering our opportunities.

No tactics, no motives behind his subs, always subbing at the hour mark after the damage has been done. The fear of bringing up your creative, young talents because they won’t bunker down and play his brand of unimaginative, predictable snoozeball!

What else can you say when Frankie Hedjuk is playing like absolute rubbish and then Bradley awards him the Captain’s arm band late in the match and kept him in? Any other coach in his right mind would have yanked him out at halftime and chewed him out…..but not Bunker Bob!

If we see Jonathan Bornstein at LB and his poor marking again (see the 1st goal surrendered..), then all USMNT fans who truly care should gather at the airport and not let him and Bradley off the plane!!!

It’s time to revolt, USMNT fans! FIRE GULATI AND FIRE BUNKER BOB BRADLEY!!!

  27. Would this lineup work?

    Donovan–Jozy
    Clint-Bradley-Torres-Benny
    Castillo-Boca-Demerit-Spector

I know Demerit is out right now, but he should be back soon? Rogers and Holden can subs for the wingers. Clark and Dax in the central midfield. Cunningham and Cooper up top. Conrad and Bornstein in the back. When Gooch is back he take Spector’s spot and move Boca to the right.

  28. Advocat, I’ll level with you. These may be things that Josh Wolff displayed when he was in great form for the national team but at the moment, we only catch these things in flashes. He may have been better than Altidore back in his hayday, but at the moment, unless you can show us he’s having some sort of resurgance, he’ll stay right where he is.

Besides, who is saying that Altidore is the USA’s best forward? Dempsey scored three goals in three games for club and country this year and Davies(Get well, CD9) was on a tear before the tragic incident.

  30. I think that it’s just a friendly and that the USA should worry about it’s first team and who is going to be starting.

    That being said….

With all the injuries to key players, one of the key points of these friendlies was to test depth, and have a better plan as to how to start and finish off the game; Bob Bradley simply didn’t do a good enough job with these things, especially considering expanding depth is something he’s known for. A good chunk of it isn’t really his fault, but he needed to handle the friendlies better and he simply didn’t. I don’t think it’s worth getting fired over, but in the future, he’ll need to be more aware with the consistent problems the USA has, which at this point is:

    -Starting off a game well
    -Finishing off a game well
    -Holding the lead
    -Holding possession

He’s a great coach, but he’ll need to address the issues at some point and I suppose fans like Adrian, if they can calm themselves down and REALLY think about these things, may be the ones to get to him.
