Americans Abroad: Tuesday Rewind

It appears a little bit of time on the bench has done DaMarcus Beasley a world of good.

Beasley followed up his impressive weekend performance by starting in his third consecutive game for Rangers vs. Dundee United on Tuesday. The midfielder once again had a stellar outing, scoring the game-winner, and adding an assist in Rangers' 3-0 triumph.

Beasely's stunning goal (which can be seen after the jump) was first his since the 2008 Scottish Cup final, and pushed Rangers past Celtic for first place in the Scottish Premier League standings.

Beasley was one of several Americans Abroad in action on Tuesday. Here is how the rest of the Americans Abroad performed:

ENGLAND

  • Brad Friedel started, played 90 minutes and made two saves in Aston Villa's 2-0 win vs. Sunderland.
  • Brad Guzan dressed but did not play in Aston Villa's 2-0 win vs. Sunderland.
  • Jonathan Spector dressed but did not play in West Ham United's 3-1 loss vs. Bolton Wanderers.
  • Marcus Hahnemann started, played 90 minutes and made seven saves in Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0 loss vs. Manchester United.
  • Jemal Johnson did not dress in Milton Keynes Dons' 4-1 win vs. Hereford United in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
  • Mike Grella started and played 60 minutes in Leeds United's 2-0 win vs. Accrington Stanley in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

SCOTLAND

  • DaMarcus Beasley started, played 83 minutes, scored a GOAL and had an assist in Rangers' 3-0 win vs. Dundee United.

  • Maurice Edu did not dress in Rangers' 3-0 win vs. Dundee United.

  1. are some still saying their is a question as to if Beas should be back ? lol do you really think is going to leave him , He’s Bob’s boy from back in Chicago and he’s playing ball why would he leave him. Who do we have better than him on the left or on the right for that matter. When beas is in form he is one of our best players stop hating.

  2. lol, As much as I love DMB making a potential comeback…it was clearly supposed to be a cross that took a lucky spin his way…at least thats what it looks like to me.

  3. okay, but Dundee are 4th and just 7 points behind gers in 1st place.

agreed that it’s nice to see Run DMB regaining form (he never lost his confidence)and people who said he was done don’t know what kind of a fierce competitor he really is.

  4. Boy we are fickle fans! Beasley came through several really bad injuries. Granted, he had a poor performance when Bradley played him at left back, a position he was never intended for, but he is still a quality player with good speed. He has experience and results playing high level soccer. With PSV in 2005, he scored 3 goals in Champions League matches. I might add that those goals were scored while Guss Hiddick had him playing left forward in a 4-3-3 formation. I think this is his best position.

  5. Wow, way to be a Negative Nellie, haha. Definitely not a cross. Someone did make a back post run, but it was a late run as if they were looking for a possible deflection by the keeper or a rebound off the post. The ball is not intended for anything but net.

  6. Either way, he’s a quality option to have in the squad and on the bench in South Africa. God forbid any injuries, his experience and form (if he keeps it up) would be a great second option.

As for Robbie Rogers, I wonder what happens if he misses out on the WC this cycle. With other talent hopefully developing behind him, he could very well end up in a Taylor Twellman-type situation where the chance evades him. Either way, I think BB would be much more comfortable with an in-form Beaz off the bench as opposed to untested Robbie, as fast as he is.

  7. That PSV team was really good with Park ji Sung, Alex, Mark VB, Farfan, Jv of H, etc. Champions League Semis and DMB played a huge role. Injuries created the loss of form, but his recovery looks legit.

  8. I am a fan of DMB, but use caution before you place him at the WC next year.

    1) He’s had only a couple of games in the SPL recently. Lets see if he holds onto his form into March/April of 2010.

    2) Unless Bob Bradley actually makes the move to put Donovan or Dempsey up top as a striker where would DMB play beyond 20 minute stints at end of games when BB tened to move Don/Duce up-top during the Confed? 3) IMO Honden & DMB are on equal footing…Robbie Rogers would be the bubble player to me and Rogers seems to be improving and has greater speed which plays to BB’s counter attacking style.

    4) Castillo is another option (Maybe the best behind Donovan) at the Left Wing position who has speed and better control than DMB. And has ability to play LB as well…being more versitile is a positive for him.

    5) If he does continue to improve/play well will at least give us more compition in the Jan Camp and upcoming friendlies to push players at the Nat level.

  9. Left Back….God I hope not! He shouldn’t come anywhere near LB again after the way he played earlier in the year. If he does make it back onto the squad (needs to continue playing well) then it should only be as a winger.

  10. True. He’s got 6th most goals in US national team history tied with Dempsey and Earnie Stewart. If you take away all the retired players in front of him(4) he’s 2nd only to Landon in scoring

  11. What a strike. What vision, to see that opening. Not to mention the execution. People forget – Beasley is one of the deadliest finishers we have. I remember at times being so frustrated with our strikers who couldn’t finish simple chances, and wondering why they couldn’t be more like Beasley, who rarely wasted an opportunity.

  12. i assumed it was a cross too. but after watching it again, the way he landed, like you said, makes it look more like a shot than i initially thought. either way, its an american scoring a goal.

  13. Sorry to be so jaded but Beasley’s story is a sad one that repeats itself over and over. Look for him to sustain a long term injury soon. (Please do not tell me I want Beasley to be injured, I do NOT.)

  14. Agreed. And an in form Beasely for me is still ahead of Holden at this point. Either way I like the option this presents. 60mins/30mins or vice versa?

Beasely seems like he’s having fun again which is big.

What I’d like to see is how well he can cross the ball with his right.
