Manchester City finally found a way to win a match, and not draw for once, when it defeated a very young Arsenal squad in today's Carling Cup quarterfinals. The 3-0 victory was sparked by a wonderful goal from Argentine striker Carlos Tevez, who danced around the Gunners defense to open the scoring.
Enjoy:
The win has set up a Manchester Derby semifinal, with City facing United. Blackburn will take on Aston Villa after knocking off Chelsea in penalty kicks.
What did you think of Tevez's goal? See Manchester City turning things around? Surprised to see Arsenal's young guns eliminated?
Share your thoughts below (And for those who didn't see the Shaun-Wright Phillips goal in the same game, check it out after jump).
Donovan is average? And who isn’t aging that is alive? If you could tell me how to stop aging I could help you bottle it and sell it 😉
Both goals were beautifully struck, although the defending gave both too much space. But the strikes for both goals were perfect. Tevez is a bulldog and has been playing very well in the reserved forward role.
I can’t believe Blackburn pulled off the shocker. There goes the quadruple…
I trust everyone will be rooting for Guzan to win the cup? I think they have as good a shot as anyone, unless Man Utd decides to play the regulars in the final. Even then, they aren’t the same without Ronaldo/Tevez.
Good Win by City… United are a different matter, and will mix in some experienced players with young ones for the semi-final. City will have to be on top form to progress… Awesome goal by SWP…

Short term memory loss?
They beat Arsenal earlier in the season 4-2.
If you’re going to be a (jerk) I recommend being correct on whatever it is you’re putting down.
Why shouldn’t Donovan go to Club America? Damn it, he should! Why be just another average, aging midfielder in Europe and have to deal with the bias and politics? Landon_D should go to MEXICO where ONE HUNDRED MILLION people will follow his every move.
call me crazy, but.. in my Fifa 10 career(manager mode), im UNited in the final of the English Cup(in reality its either the FA cup or Carling cup, but EA cant use the name due to licensing) anyway, i played Man city in the semi-final and villa beat chelsea in the semi-final to go to the final vs me(ManU)..wtf?!?! this was this morning before i left for class, before the games were played today. isnt that weird??! so yeah, if the Carling Cup comes down to ManU vs. Ashton Villa, u heard it here first haha.(United will win of course, in my manager mode and in reality)
Off topic. Ives you heard anything about Donovan being courted by Club America. ESPNDeportes’ show Futbol Picante has a segment on this topic.
Ives, I don’t disagree with you very often as I find you to be pretty balanced and fair. Those were both well taken goals, but no defender ever put in a challenge on either of them. That is Horriffic Defending. On the Tevez goal, Arsenal gave the ball away cheaply in midfield and never even came close to putting in a tackle to win it back. Still a nice finish by Tevez, but there was no challenge at all from the defense. SWP was also a nice finish, but you can’t run with the attacking player for 50 yards and never put in a tackle.
(SBI-Listen Ian, if you can’t appreciate those goals without having to complain about the defending then I don’t know what to tell you. And was Arsenal supposed to slide-tackle Tevez in the area? To be fair, it was a young Arsenal team, but who cares. Nice moves, nice goals. Great players and plays make defenders look foolish, otherwise the plays don’t happen. Period.)
i think swp’s was actually better. tevez’s goal was top shelf but swp was running about 75% and he hit an incredible shot that most would have blasted over or shanked wide for a throw in
Ah yes, a Tevez goal sighting. I guess now we have to wait another ten games or so for his next goal, which will no doubt be a great effort, and more ignorant people will claim he’s underrated. Sigh. He has the same amount of goals as Michael Owen in the EPL, and Owen plays ten minutes a game. One player cost nothing, one costs about 5 million dollars a goal. Yes, I am a United fan, and I enjoy reading when people ignore the facts and think Tevez is an amazing striker. I just read the perfect line in a soccernet article. Tevez is a scorer of great goals, but not a great goalscorer. Couldn’t have said it better myself…
Agreed…sick strike from SWP. Tevez’s goal reminded me of one of Freddy’s early goals for DC except from the other side
Really? i think he has to be one of the most overrated. nice strike tho.
That reverse away from goal is Tevez’s money move. World Cup defenders will snuff it out.
are you talking about SWP or Tevez. Tevez is hardly underrated, SWP maybe..
And he gets his old mates in a home and home (yay double Manchester Derby!) instead of the much easier Villa or Rovers. You’d think they’d rigged it for a better semis or something (yes, you’d rather have the final, but a home and home in Manchester is a lot of Sterling…
Underrated. Right. I think unstable is the word you are looking for. He is perpetually dissatisfied and is now openly talking about retiring after the World Cup. Carling Cup Superstar is not worth 25 million.
SWP goal is a beautiful goal. Tevez’s goal was from horrible defending.
Oh wait, there it is… site loaded slow for me… I’ll get my coat.
No love for SWP’s equally as good, if not better goal?
dylan- man city doesn’t have the same history as the “top4” specially in wins,so maybe the players are taking a bit to figure it’s idenity out,but the players are there. on top if they add 2 or 3 more players btwn. now and next season, then watchout.
Brilliant strike – I wouldn’t have described it as Tevez dancing through defenders though (that brings to mind Messi on one of his runs). Tevez made a nice move and drilled his shot to the upper corner.
The defending certainly was bad but I wouldnt call it horrific
I think it’s pretty sad all the money spent/ ink spilled on this team and yet they can’t seem to net a win unless it’s against an Arsenal B team.
Absolutely horrific defending.
(SBI-Never fails. Any time a great goal is scored, somebody chooses to rip on the defenders rather than crediting the goal scorer.)
I think he’s one of the most underrated players in the EPL. Excellent strike.
I thought Wright-Phillips goal was even better.
Nice, very nice. Could have big World Cup!
