If you thought this week was kind to the U.S. national team on the injury front, you will love to hear that Jay DeMerit is closing in on his return.

DeMerit has recovered quicker than expected from a freak eye injury that has sidelined him since September, and the Watford centerback resumed full training with the club this week

Despite DeMerit's progress, Watford does not want to rush his recovery, so it will be unlikely that he plays in either of the club's next two games (Watford plays Newcastle United on Saturday, and Queens Park Rangers two days later).

DeMerit joins injured midfielders Maurice Edu and Jermaine Jones as players who have recently returned to training after lengthy injury layoffs. The news of DeMerit's recovery also comes on the same week that injured forward Charlie Davies said he would recover from multiple injuries in time for the World Cup.

What do you think of DeMerit returning to training? Excited by all the good news this week? Starting to believe the U.S. will get a lucky draw?

  1. Michael Bradley had a great opportunity to put Gladbach in front of Bayern but his 5 yard first touch takes away all the angle. Gomez scores against run of play.

  2. I think any player who wants to be seriously in the mix for June in SA needs to make clear this week that they are training now(or in the case of CD9 will be ready) .

  3. From the Davies, report it stated that his injuries including a head injury that resulted in bleeding on the brain. You can think of blood on the brain as essentially acid, once blood touches blood tissue (through a subarachnoid hemorrhage or subdural hematoma) it essentially kills the neurons of the brain that it touches. That is a very crude explanation of how it works, one thing is for certain is that his brain will never be the same. From the moment of the injury, his brain flew forward and backward at an alarming rate of speed, depending upon if there was twisting and turning of his neck and spine, with the position of his body in relation to the impact site of the crash will determine exactly how his brain was injured.

I am not his doctor, I have not seen his neuroimaging scans and I do not know the extent of his injuries. However, I can comment on the force of the impact that he received, it was tremendous. His brain swelled and is still continuing to recover from the impact. For any injury of this kind, he will likely regain any functioning that he will regain in the coming year. Although small gains can be made after that time, they are not typical. I wish the best for Mr. Davies. I am a big proponent of him and the USMNT. I am hopeful and optimistic that he makes a full recovery.

  4. We can’t draw new zealand. If we draw South Africa that means we’ll be playing a SAmerican team, and they are all pretty good. Kinda hoping we draw Paraquay if that’s the case. A group of South Africa, Paraquay, Slovenia would be very do-able.

  5. Okay it was his eye the whole time. But how much could that have effected his form as a whole? It wasn’t like he tore a tendon or something else in his leg.

  6. glad to see he’s got plenty of time to shake the rust off before WC 2010. I don’t think he falls into the same category as some of the others. He was really an entrenched part of the backline, particularly now that Gooch is a question mark. Now, Mr. Jones and Mr. Edu on the other hand need to get back to form, log some minutes and force Bradley to make some decisions. The more I think about it, playing 4 backs with Edu and Bradley isn’t a bad idea. I think I like that tandem more than bradley/clark

  7. It’d be interesting to know more about Davies. The original interview was so short, and short on detail. I really find it hard to believe he will be ready, but would be amazing to know morea bout how he’s come along.

  8. Everyone’s getting healthy and yet so few international dates next spring to evaluate the sudden influx of possible players. January camp and a match in March? What else?

  9. It is great to have so many players returning to training. Makes for a much more competitive environment leading up to roster selection. These are the problems we want Bob Bradley to have!
