Maynor Figueroa’s sensational strike

If you're a U.S. national team fan, you should be quite familiar with the Honduras national team and its players, having seen the U.S. team play them four times in 2009. But just in case you were starting to forget, here is a goal from Honduran left back Maynor Figueroa that is sure to stick in your memory bank.

In Wigan Athletic's 2-2 draw against Stoke City on Saturday, Stoke committed what appeared to be a harmless foul, but Figueroa had other ideas as he quickly blasted a powerful and well-placed free kick from his own half that sailed over goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen.

British media outlet the Daily Mail has asked its readers if this is the Premiership's best goal ever, and while such an accolade is debatable, the goal is definitely a goal-of-the-year candidate due to its power, placement and trajectory.

What do you think of Figueroa's goal? Consider it among the EPL's best ever?

  2. can’t say im THAT impressed. Its much better given that he hit upper 90’s but that was essentially an open net. Arshavin’s goal today was much more impressive, IMO.

  3. Nice goal. But if the keeper had been set on his line it wouldn’t have gone in. Then again part of the game is taking full advantage of your potential oppurtunities. Nice goal.

  4. Definitely goal of the year candidate. The british media talking about it being the best goal ever from the premier league shows you what sensationalists they are.

  5. I really expect Honduras to do well in the WC. Their quality will surprise people. They have an extremely competitive group but I’m picking them ahead of Switz and Chile (Spain wins the group – duh). They will be a much better representative than Costa Rica.

  7. I would love that section back as well. It doesn’t have to be as in depth as Americans Abroad but maybe just the players in the top flights would be nice.

  8. Good goal. Maybe the goal of the season but a couple of contributing factors making it a bit easier. No doubt a good strike, though. It has barely any lift above the net, which is pretty hard to do from that distance.

  9. What’s particularly amazing is that he seemed to approach it so casually, like he was in complete control and knew what was going to happen. And clearly, he was in complete control. Jedi-like. Wow.
